Bio

On March 6, 1991, Tyler The Creator was born in Ladera Heights, California, to a Nigerian father of Igbo ancestry and an American mother of mixed African-American and European-Canadian backgrounds. His father was from Nigeria, while his mother was from the United States. He did not get to know his biological father and spent his childhood in the Hawthorne and Ladera Heights districts of Los Angeles. Before he could even write anything, he would take the cover off of an album’s case and make covers for his imaginary songs, along with a tracklist and song durations for each of the songs on the album.

When he was 14, he taught himself how to play the piano independently. During his 12 years of formal education, he received it from a total of 12 different institutions located in the Los Angeles and Sacramento regions. He was only there for over a week at FedEx, but he’s been there for almost two years at Starbucks. Okonma took his stage name, “Okonma,” from a Myspace website where he posted examples of his creative work.

Okonma has said on many occasions that he is an atheist and has provided evidence that his music, particularly the mixtape Bastard and the album Goblin, has overtly anti-religious lyrics. Since 2002, he has been an avid collector of BMX bicycles and skateboards. He also enjoys skateboarding. Okonma has made many overt allusions to having had same-sex relationships or experiencing same-sex inclinations in his songs and interviews. This has caused some people to question Okonma’s identification, which has also been a matter of discussion. Jaden Smith came out in November 2018 to say that he saw Okonma, even though Okonma had denied the relationship rumors.

Okonma, along with Hodgy, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies, was one of the original members of the alternative hip-hop trio Strange Future, which was established in 2007. They made their first mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, and self-released it in November 2008. Okonma’s debut mixtape under his name, Bastard, was independently distributed on December 25, 2009. The mixtape was ranked 32nd on Pitchfork Media’s list of the best albums of 2010, which was finally compiled in 2010. On February 11, 2011, Okonma released the music video for the song titled “Yonkers.”

Several different internet media sources quickly picked up the video. A more extensive version with a third verse was made available on iTunes. The album “Yonkers” that Okonma released earned him the title of “Best New Artist” at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Despite Okonma’s vehement denials, fans and press alike have categorized him as a horrorcore artist due to the theme content that appeared in his first two solo efforts. These projects were released before the term “horrorcore” ever existed.

In 2009, Tyler released his very first mixtape under his name, titled Bastard. After the release of his first studio album, Goblin, in April 2011 on XL Recordings, he inked a partnership deal with RED Distribution and Sony Music Entertainment for himself and his label Odd Future Records. The usage of homophobic and sexist insults by Tyler in his previous dark, horrorcore-influenced debuts drew widespread criticism from a variety of quarters. He issued the albums Wolf (2013) and Cherry Bomb (2015), the latter of which was a break from his earlier work in that it experimented with a more melodic style and infused with jazz. Wolf (2013) was his first album.

His fourth studio album, “Flower Boy,” released in 2017, was a financial and critical success. Igor, Tyler’s fifth studio album, was released in 2019 and received high praise from music critics. It became Tyler’s first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2020. Tyler has been considered for nominations in the MTV Video Music Awards, the Grammy Awards, and the BRIT Awards.

Not only did he design the band’s apparel and other merchandising, he also created the artwork for every one of Odd Future’s album covers. In 2011, Tyler established a clothing brand known as Golf Wang. In 2012, he began the process of creating the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, which is an annual music event. Between 2015 and 2018, he managed his subscription service app known as Golf Media. This app included live streams of each Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival and Tyler’s original scripted series.

In addition, the tune “Earthquake,” which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, is included on the accompanying soundtrack. On December 23, 2019, Okonma released two tracks: “Best Interest,” a song that was not selected for inclusion on Igor but was released with a music video, and “Gang B,” a song that was not chosen for inclusion on Igor but was released with a music video. Igor was victorious and brought home the trophy for Best Rap Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

In contrast to other people’s end-of-year lists, Tyler collected 12 songs that were either released in the last year or during the previous few years. The diverse mix kicked off with a song by The Sweet Enoughs from 2020 titled “In Mind,” followed by a record by Dina Ogon titled “Tombola 94” in 2021, and a song by La’Verne Washington from 2020 titled “I Found What I’ve Been Searching For.” Additionally, Tyler gave his approval to Charles Stepney’s song “Around the House” and to Pusha-collaboration T’s “Neck and Wrist,” which featured Jay-Z and Pharrell.

In addition to that, he added “Buttons” by Steve Lacy, an artist affiliated with Odd Future; “Pour le Moment” by Sol Set; and “Cash in Cash Out,” a single by Pharrell Williams that included 21 Savage and Williams himself. Not only did he identify one, but two tracks by Kendrick Lamar: “Worldwide Steppers” and “Savior” featuring Baby Keem and Sam Dew. Both songs were included in K.Dot’s highly praised album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, released in 2022.
