Tracye McQuirter Bio

Tracye McQuirter, who is of African-American origin, is a public health nutritionist, an activist for veganism, an author, and a speaker. McQuirter went to Sidwell Friends School for his secondary education and obtained his high school certificate in the year 1984. McQuirter grew up in Washington, District of Columbia. In 1988, Amherst College granted her the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and in 2003, New York University conferred upon her the degree of Master of Public Health Nutrition (MPH). When McQuirter was in the seventh grade at Sidwell Friends School, the teachers there were the ones who initially exposed her to the concept of vegetarianism.

In 1986, when McQuirter was a sophomore at Amherst College, the Black Student Union brought Dick Gregory, a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement and a global human rights campaigner, to campus to give a discussion about the condition of black people in the United States. McQuirter was interested in hearing what Gregory had to say about the predicament of black people in the United States. Instead, he addressed the topics of health, politics, economics, and culture in relation to the diet of Black people, as well as the reasons why Black people should switch to a vegetarian diet. The dish that he was referring to was called “The Plate of Black America.” Because McQuirter was unable to get what Gregory had said out of her head, she made the decision to read up on vegetarianism so that she could better educate herself on the topic.

Following her trip to Howard University, McQuirter discovered that the city of Washington, District of Columbia is home to a sizeable vegan and vegetarian community comprised of African American individuals. When she went back to Amherst for her senior year, she was a firm believer in the vegetarian diet, which she had adopted during her junior year. She was able to break her dependence on cheese and transition to a vegan diet during her final year of high school. Before that, she had not yet given up cheese because she was still consuming it in some form or another. Marya McQuirter served as the organization’s first executive director.

At the time, McQuirter was in the final year of her undergraduate studies. McQuirter worked as the director of the Mary McLeod Bethune National Historic Site Museum in Washington, District of Columbia, beginning in the year 1990 and continuing her duties there until the year 1996. In celebration of Mary McLeod Bethune’s position as a co-founder of the United Nations, she was invited to participate as an honorary delegate at the United Nations Conference on Women, which took place in Beijing, China, in the year 1996. This conference was convened in recognition of her accomplishments. This was carried out at the time that she was in the area. In the years 1999 and 2000, McQuirter was employed by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) as the organization’s public policy liaison.

During that period, she was a strategist for the successful lawsuit that was launched against the USDA to allege racial and food industry bias in the formation of the United States Dietary Guidelines. The action was brought against the USDA in an attempt to prove that the guidelines were biased. The Black Vegetarian Society of New York was created in 2002 by McQuirter and one other person. At the time, McQuirter was a graduate student at New York University.

After relocating to Washington, District of Columbia, McQuirter went on to become the director of the Eat Smart Program at the Vegetarian Society of DC, which was the first vegan nutrition program in the United States to be sponsored by the federal government. He held this position from 2004 until 2009. In addition, McQuirter developed the first vegan cooking and lecture series to be conducted at Whole Foods shops in the Washington, DC region during that time period.

The name of the program was changed from Soul Food to Whole Food throughout its run. According to the New York Times, which published the article in 2017, By Any Greens Necessary, which the author wrote and published in 2010, was a significant book that led to the increase of veganism among African-Americans between the time of its release in 2010 and 2017. In 2016, in conjunction with Farm Sanctuary, McQuirter created the first-of-its-kind African American Vegan Starter Guide.

This guide was published by McQuirter. In 2017, the magazine Vegetarian Times dubbed her a “New Food Hero.”In 2018, she and her mother, Mary McQuirter, worked together on the development of their second book, Ageless Vegan, to commemorate both of their three decades as vegans. The book was published under the title “Ageless Vegan.” In 2019, she was also inducted into the United States Animal Rights Hall of Fame, in addition to being honored by PBS as a “Woman Thought Leader.”
