Bio

Tina Fey, born Elizabeth Stamatina on May 18, 1970, is an American actress, comedian, dramatist, producer, and writer. Her contributions to the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and the creation of the comedies 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are what made her most famous . Mean Girls, Baby Mama, Date Night, Megamind, Muppets Most Wanted, Sisters, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Wine Country, and Soul Food are just a few of Fey’s notable film roles.

On May 18, 1970, Elizabeth Stamatina Fey was born in Upper Darby Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Her father, Donald Henry Fey, raised $500 million for schools, hospitals, and public service organizations through grant proposals and direct mail appeals. He was a Korean War veteran, university administrator for the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University, and writer of grant proposals.

Fey created a scholarship fund in her father’s honor at his alma mater, Temple University, to aid veterans pursuing journalism after his passing. Zenobia “Jeanne” , her mother, is a Piraeus, Greece-born retired brokerage employee. Vasiliki Kourelakou, the maternal grandmother of Fey, traveled alone from the Greek town of Petrina to the United States in February 1921. Fey’s father had ancestors from England, Germany, Ireland, and Scotland; one of her paternal ancestors was John Hewson, an English textile manufacturer who immigrated to the country with Benjamin Franklin’s help and went on to found a quilting factory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Kensington neighborhood.

Fey’s heritage was determined via a genealogical DNA test sponsored by the television program Finding Your Roots to be 94% European, 3% Middle Eastern, and 3% Caucasian.  Peter, her older brother, is eight years older than her. while appearing in The Second City productions. At the invitation of Saturday Night Live’s head writer, Adam McKay, a longtime performer at the Second City, Fey submitted a number of screenplays to the NBC variety program in 1997.

After meeting the creator of SNL, Lorne Michaels, she was employed as a writer and relocated from Chicago to New York.  “I’d had my eye on the program for ages, the way other kids have their eye on Derek Jeter,” Fey told The New Yorker.  Fey at first “struggled” at SNL. Chris Farley starred in a Sally Jessy Raphael spoof in her first sketch, which aired.  Fey continued to write parodies, one of which was of The View, an ABC morning discussion show.  Together with Rachel Dratch, who portrays one of the teens, she co-wrote the “Sully and Denise” skits.

Fey acted as an extra in an episode from 1998,and after seeing a video of herself, she determined to diet and shed 30 pounds. She said to The New York Times, “I had money, was a healthy weight, and was in New York City, but I was unable to purchase any clothing. There was interest in having me on camera once I lost weight.”  When McKay resigned in 1999, Michaels approached Fey about taking over as lead writer. She was the first female chief writer for SNL. She participated in a Real World/Road Rules Extreme Challenge episode in January 2001 as a judge for a mission that used comedy. Fey talks about her first exposure to comedy:

My parents snuck me into a showing of Young Frankenstein, as I recall. Additionally, we enjoyed watching Saturday Night Live, Monty Python, and vintage Marx Brothers films. To watch The Honeymooners, my father would let us stay up late. However, my father forbade us from watching The Flintstones because he thought it plagiarised The Honeymooners.  Actually, for someone my age, I know pretty little about the Flintstones. For a class project on humor, Fey read Joe Franklin’s Seventy Years of Great Film Comedians when she was eleven years old. She has credited Catherine O’Hara as an inspiration because she grew up watching Second City Television.

Fey adopted the moniker “Tina” when she was young. She went to Upper Darby’s Beverly Hills Middle School and Cardington-Stonehurst Elementary School. She was aware of her passion in comedy from her middle school years. Fey went to Upper Darby High School, where she was a co-editor of the school newspaper, The Acorn, a choir member, a theatre club member, and a member of the tennis team. She wrote The Colonel, the newspaper’s humorous column, under an alias. When she graduated in 1988, After applying, Fey was accepted to the University of Virginia, where she majored in acting and playwriting and won the Pettway Prize. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 1992.

The Second City, an improv comedy troupe based in Chicago, is where Fey made her acting debut. She started off as a writer for Saturday Night Live , subsequently rising to the position of head writer and performer. She co-anchored the Weekend Update segment and later created a satirical character based on Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin for further guest appearances. She co-wrote the screenplay for Mean Girls, which was based on the 2002 self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabes, and co-starred in it in 2004.

Following her departure from SNL in 2006, Fey developed the sitcom 30 Rock for Broadway Video, which was partially based on her time there. Fey played Liz Lemon, the chief writer of a made-up sketch comedy series, on the show. In 2011, she published her autobiography, Bossypants, which spent five weeks at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and earned her a Grammy Award nomination. She collaborated on the comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix in 2015. Mean Girls, the musical version that Fey wrote and for which she was nominated for a Tony Award, made its Broadway debut in 2018.

Fey has won numerous awards, including five Screen Actors Guild Awards, nine Primetime Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and seven Writers Guild of America Awards. Because of her Sarah Palin portrayal on Saturday Night Live, Fey won the AP Entertainer of the Year award in 2008. The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was given to Fey in 2010, becoming her the prize’s youngest laureate.
