Lena Waithe, an American actress, producer, and screenwriter, was born on May 17, 1984. She is the creator of the BET comedy series Boomerang and Twenties as well as the Showtime drama series The Chi. She is also the executive producer of the horror anthology series Them and created and produced the 2020 crime movie Queen & Slim.
Waithe was a Chicago, Illinois, native. When she was fifteen, her father, Lawrence David Waithe, passed away. Winston Waithe, her paternal great-grandfather, moved his family, who were descended from sugar plantation slaves, from Christ Church, Barbados, to Boston in 1921. Although she did not initially want to be an actress, she knew at the age of seven that she wanted to write for television. Her grandmother and single mother gave her writing considerable familial support.
When she was three years old, her parents got divorced. Waithe and her sister were raised on the South Side of Chicago until Waithe was 12 years old. Turner-Drew, a neighborhood elementary magnet school with a large African American student body, was where Waithe went until she transferred to Evanston to finish middle school.
She graduated with a degree in cinema and television arts from Evanston Township High School. graduated in 2006 from Columbia College Chicago, complimenting faculty dramatist Michael Fry for his mentoring and instruction. She also worked at a movie theatre, a Best Buy, and a Blockbuster in an effort to further her involvement in the television and film industries.
After moving to Los Angeles, Waithe found work as the executive producer’s assistant on the popular sitcom Girlfriends. She soon got a small part in Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback. She also worked as a producer for the 2014 satirical comedy Dear White People and a writer for the Fox television series Bones, How to Rock, and the Fox television series Bones, all of which debuted in 2012. The Flavor Unit Entertainment-produced YouTube series “Twenties,” which Waithe developed and appeared in, was optioned by BET in 2014. Waithe wrote and directed the 2011 viral video Shit Black Girls Say in addition to the 2013 online series “Hello Cupid” and the short film “Save Me,” all of which were screened at indie film festivals. Waithe was listed as one of Variety’s “10 Comedians to Watch” in 2014.
Waithe and Common’s future television project, The Chi, which follows the maturation of a young urban Black American guy, received a pilot order from Showtime in August 2015. To create a story that conveys a more complex picture of her hometown than is normally depicted, Waithe, the show’s creator, drew on her personal experience of growing up on the South Side and interacting with its diversity. Similar to this, she used her position as co-chair of the Committee of Black Writers at the Writers Guild to further her influence in favor of the Black American community in the entertainment industry.
After meeting the show’s creator and star, Aziz Ansari, who wrote the show with Alan Yang, originally intended Denise to be a straight, white woman with the potential to develop into one of the main character’s love interests, Waithe was cast in the Netflix series Master of None in 2015. “For some reason, [casting director] Allison Jones thought about me for it, a Black gay woman,” Waithe said.
To make the role more resemble Waithe, Ansari and Yang revised the script, writing, “All of us actors play heightened versions of ourselves.” I don’t think we’ve ever seen a sly, harem-pant-wearing, hip Topshop sweatshirt-sporting, snapback-hat-rocking lesbian on television, the woman remarked. And she added, “I am aware of how many women in the globe look a lot like myself. We are here. What was going to be so significant and intriguing to me was its visibility.”For the season 2 episode “Thanksgiving,” written by Waithe and Ansari, they received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2017.
She made history by becoming the first woman of color to win that particular Emmy. Waithe claimed that the episode was based on her coming out as a lesbian experience. She addressed her LGBTQIA family specifically during her Emmy speech, stating that “The qualities that make us different—those are our superpowers.” “Thank you for embracing a young Indian kid from South Carolina and a little gay Black girl from the South Side of Chicago,” she concluded her address, acknowledging her experience as a Black woman. Waithe also created the drama series The Chi, which is autobiographical. On November 8, 2017, Out Magazine named Waithe the Out100: Artist of the Year. Waithe has provided the narration for the slogan of AT&T advertisements starting in 2018.
In 2017, Waithe became the first African-American woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for writing the episode of the show called “Thanksgiving,” which was loosely based on her own experience of coming out to her mother. Waithe rose to fame for her role in the Netflix comedy-drama series Master of None. Additionally, she starred in the HBO series Westworld and the 2018 adventure film Ready Player One directed by Steven Spielberg. Waithe was listed on Fast Company’s Queer 50 list in 2021 and 2022 as well as Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018.
