Tijs Michiel Verwest, better known by his stage name Tisto born January 17, 1969, is a Dutch DJ and music producer who hails from Breda. He is known professionally as Tito. He received the most votes from fans in a poll conducted by Mix magazine in 2010 and 2011 to determine who the “Greatest DJ of All Time” is. His title of “greatest DJ of the last 20 years” was bestowed to him by the readers of DJ Mag in 2013. In addition to this, other credible sources refer to him as the “Godfather of Electronic Dance Music.”
In 1997, he co-founded the record company Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink. Under that imprint, he distributed the CD series titled Magik as well as In Search of Sunrise. To first connected with producer Dennis Waakop Reijers in the year 1998, and the two have collaborated actively since then. On January 17, 1969, Tijs Michiel Verwest was born in Breda, which is located in the province of North Brabant. At the age of twelve, he made the decision to pursue his interest in music more seriously. In the past, he enjoyed tuning in to radio broadcasts such as “The Ferry Maat Soul show” and “In The Mix with Ben Liebrand.” At the age of fourteen, he deepened his dedication to the craft and started performing as a DJ at school functions on a paid basis.
At the urging of his manager, Tisto began holding residencies at a number of clubs in the Netherlands between the years 1985 and 1994. He honed his unique live style by performing on weekends from ten o’clock in the evening until four in the morning at a small club in Breda called the Spock. When he first began his career as a DJ, the majority of the music he played was new beat and acid house. In 1994, he started putting out records on the sub-labels Chemo and Coolman which were owned by Noculan Records. During these years, he created music under a variety of names, including Da Joker and DJ Limited, including hardcore and gabber compositions. After some time, Tisto was found by the general manager of the recording studio Basic Beat Recordings, which is headquartered in Rotterdam.
Before playing at Amnesia in July 2000, Tisto was spotted in Sant Antoni, which is located on the island of Ibiza. Late in the year 1994, Tisto signed a record deal with Basic Beat, which is where he first met Arny Bink. Arny was the founder of the sub-label Trashcan, which Tisto released records on. Later, Tisto and Arny created the Guardian Angel sub-label together, which is where they launched the popular Forbidden Paradise series. During the years 1995 and 1996, he was responsible for the release of four extended plays on Lightning Records’ sub labels Bonzai Jumps and XTC.
In 1997, he joined his good buddy Yves Vandichel on his sub-label, DJ Yves, which was a part of the Human Resource label XSV Music, which is no longer in business. In the fall of 1997, Bink and Tisto made the decision to leave Basic Beat and establish their own record label, Black Hole Recordings. Around the same time, the record label Trashcan was shut down, while Guardian Angel kept putting out new music until the year 2002. Tiesto is responsible for the publication of the Magik series via Black Hole, as well as the establishment of two important sub-labels known as SongBird and In Trance We Trust. From 1998 to 1999, he had songs released on Planetary Consciousness, which is where he first met A&R Hardy Heller, who later extended an invitation to him to release several records on Black Hole.
Gouryella is a trance-based duet that was formed in 1998 when Tiesto collaborated with another Dutch DJ named Ferry Corsten to form the group. The debut single from Gouryella, which was simply titled “Gouryella,” was presented to the public for the first time in May 1999. The song was an instant success, and it peaked in the top fifteen of the UK Singles Chart, among other chart positions throughout the world. This tune was featured in Tiesto’s Magik Three: Far from Earth compilation, and he also played it during his set at the very first ID&T Innercity party, which is considered to be his first major breakthrough. The following track, titled “Walhalla,” also appeared on charts around the world, reaching its highest position on the UK Singles Chart at number 27.
Both of the singles, which were distributed by Ferry’s Tsunami label, ultimately achieved the status of Gold on the Billboard 200 chart. During these same years, Tisto worked with Benno de Goeij of Rank 1 under the moniker Kamaya Painters as part of a collaborative project. The first book in the In Search of Sunrise series was published under his name in the month of November 1999. Since that time, he has given monthly performances as a resident at Gatecrasher in Sheffield. He also played a 12-hour set in Amsterdam, which was his longest to date.On December 31, 1999, he gave a performance at the special party that ID&T threw in celebration of the turn of the millennium called Trance Energy 2000.
In the year 2000, Tisto collaborated with Armin van Buuren on the production of two separate albums: Alibi – “Eternity,” which was issued by the label Armind, and Major League – “Wonder Where You Are?,” which was issued by the label Black Hole. To make the decision to focus on his solo work after the release of “Tenshi” in September of 2000. He then allowed Ferry Corsten to assume full ownership of the Gouryella project and continue developing it on his own. In the end, he was the one who brought Armin van Buuren and Johan Gielen to the attention of the general public by way of his first compilations and the “In Trance We Trust” series. To make his debut in the United States with the mix album Summerbreeze, which featured his remix of Delerium’s “Silence.” This version of the song remained on the Top Ten chart in the United Kingdom for four weeks and peaked at number three on the Billboard dance chart. The sequel, titled In Search of Sunrise 2, was made available for purchase in November of 2000.
Between the years 1998 and 2000, Tisto and Ferry Corsten worked together under the alias Gouryella. More popular audiences were introduced to him thanks to his remix of Delerium’s “Silence” in the year 2000, which included Sarah McLachlan. It wasn’t until 2001 that he put out his debut solo album, titled In My Memory, which spawned several significant songs and got his career off the ground. DJ Magazine’s readers ranked him as the best DJ in the world in the publication’s annual Top 100 DJs poll for three years in a row, beginning in 2002 and continuing through 2004.
Soon after the release of his second studio album, Just Be, he gave a live performance during the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004. He was the first DJ to play live on stage at an Olympic opening ceremony. Elements of Life was Tisto’s third studio album, and it was released in April of 2007, the same month that Tisto debuted his radio show, Tisto’s Club Life, on Radio 538 in the Netherlands. The album peaked at number one on the album chart in Belgium, as well as on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart in the United States, and it was shortlisted for a Grammy Award in the year 2008. Kaleidoscope, Tisto’s fourth studio album, was published in October 2009, and A Town Called Paradise, his fifth studio album, was released in June 2014. At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, he was awarded the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording in the Non-Classical category for his rendition of the hit song “All of Me” by John Legend, which he had remixed.
