Bio

The Tennessee Titans are a professional gridiron football team in the United States that call Nashville, Tennessee, home. The Titans are a team that competes in the National Football League (NFL) and belongs to the American Football Conference (AFC). In the year 2000, they qualified for Super Bowl XXXIV. From 1960 to 1996, the team was based in Houston, Texas, and competed in the American Football League (AFL) under the Oilers. During that period, they were victorious twice in the AFL championship game (1960 and 1961).

When the fledgling American Football League (AFL) was established in 1960, the Oilers were one of the first eight clubs to join. They won the first-ever American Football League championship and then went on to win it again the following season under the direction of quarterback George Blanda. In 1962, the club competed in a third straight AFL championship game, but the Dallas Texans defeated them in a nail-biting match that went into double overtime.

After that, the Oilers had four seasons in a row in which they finished in last place, and Blanda was let go in 1967 after the club won just three of their fourteen games in 1966. Following a successful comeback, Houston qualified for the postseason in 1967 and 1969. The 1970s saw the merger of the AFL and NFL, as well as a decline in the fortunes of the Oilers, who won only one game in 1972 and 1973. This trend continued throughout the decade. Houston made steady strides toward improvement over the decade, and after hiring the colorful head coach Bum Phillips in 1975 to revitalize the club, they qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1978.

The Oilers teams of the late 1970s captivated the Houston fan base thanks to an offense that featured the bruising running back Earl Campbell and the flashy wide receiver and kick returner Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, as well as a defense that was led by linebacker Robert Brazile and end Elvin Bethea. The moniker “Luv Ya Blue” was given to these Oilers because of the supporters’ undying love for the blue-clad squad. Following the 1978 and 1979 seasons, these “Luv Ya Blue” Oilers competed in the conference championship game but were beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers both times.

A less successful appearance in the playoffs occurred in 1980, and the Oilers swiftly dropped back near the bottom of the AFC rankings throughout the early to middle 1980s. Despite this, the Oilers did make the playoffs in 1980. In 1984, the Oilers recruited quarterback Warren Moon from the Canadian Football League. Soon after, the club established itself as having one of the most potent attacks in the league, which was also anchored by tackle Bruce Matthews, who would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame. From 1987 through 1993, the Oilers were guided by Moon to seven consecutive playoff appearances, although during that time they were never able to win a single conference title. Moon’s tenure as head coach of the Oilers ended in 1993.

The disgruntled ownership of the Oilers subsequently decided to send away several of the team’s finest players, including Moon. As a result, the Oilers finished the 1994 season with 2–14 wins and losses. That year, the Oilers elevated defensive coordinator Jeff Fisher to the head coach position. Fisher would go on to become the head coach of the Oilers for the most significant period in the franchise’s history and would preside over their most successful era.

The club owner’s desire for the city of Houston to construct a new football-only stadium and the Oilers’ eventual transfer to Nashville in 1997 cast a shadow over Fisher’s first seasons in control of the franchise as head coach of the NFL’s Oilers. Before the completion of their home stadium in time for the 1999 season, the Oilers played their home games in Memphis for one season and then in Nashville at Vanderbilt University’s football stadium for the next season. The club was then renamed the Tennessee Titans, a moniker that was drawn from the nickname given to Nashville as “the Athens of the South.”

In 1999, the Titans had a winning record of 13 games because of the outstanding performance of quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George. The Titans’ first playoff game at home in Nashville concluded in a manner that would be remembered for a long time. The Tennessee Titans were one point behind the Buffalo Bills with sixteen seconds left in the game when they fielded a short kickoff. Tight end Frank Wycheck then threw a lateral across the field to receiver Kevin Dyson, who quickly scored a game-winning touchdown from 75 yards out. This play became known as the “Music City Miracle.

The Titans went on the road and won two more playoff games to clinch the franchise’s first trip to the Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl, the Titans once again found themselves in a position where they were trailing their opponent (this time the St. Louis Rams) with only a few seconds remaining, and the game ended with Dyson being dramatically brought down at the 1-yard line as he attempted to score the touchdown that would have tied the game. The Titans qualified for the playoffs in three of the following four seasons, and in 2002, they made it to the American Football Conference championship game (a loss to the Oakland Raiders).

After a string of years in which they finished in last place, the Titans reclaimed their position as one of the AFC’s top teams in 2007. In 2008, they had the most remarkable record in the NFL by winning 13 games and finishing with the best record overall, but in the first round of the playoffs, they were defeated at home by the Baltimore Ravens. The triumph of the squad lasted for a short time. The Titans have not participated in the postseason since moving their franchise to Tennessee in 2002, and their absence from the playoffs in 2013 was their longest such drought since the move.
