Sufjan Stevens is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born on July 1, 1975, and his name is pronounced /Sufjan/ SOOF-yahn. He has recorded nine studio albums under his own name as well as many albums in collaboration with other musicians. Stevens has been nominated for both the Grammy Award and the Academy Award.
His first studio album, titled A Sun Came, was published in the year 2000 on the record label Asthmatic Kitty, which he and his stepfather had co-founded. Both the album Illinois, which he released in 2005, and the single “Chicago” from that album helped him achieve widespread fame. His album Illinois debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. In later years, Stevens made contributions to the score for the film “Call Me by Your Name,” which was released in 2017. He was nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media for the lead single from the soundtrack, “Mystery of Love.”
Stevens has recorded albums that range from electronica on “The Age of Adz” and “lo-fi folk” on “Seven Swans” to the orchestral orchestration of “Illinois” and “Christmas songs for Christmas” respectively. He uses a wide variety of instruments, and on any given recording, you can find him playing a good number of them himself. The music of Stevens is also well-known for its exploration of a wide variety of topics, most notably religion and spirituality.
A Beginner’s Mind, which was Stevens’ eleventh studio album and his second most current one, was produced in collaboration with Angelo De Augustine and was released in 2021. Stevens was born in the city of Detroit, Michigan, and his family remained there until he was nine years old, at which point they relocated to the town of Alanson, Michigan, which is located in the upper portion of the state of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
After his mother Carrie married her second husband Lowell Brams and moved to Oregon, his father, Rasjid, and his stepmother, Pat, were responsible for his upbringing. He would only sometimes visit his mother in Oregon. Later on, Brams became the head of the record label owned by Stevens called Asthmatic Kitty. The people of Lithuania and Greece are Stevens’ ancestors. In addition to graduating from Harbour Light Christian School, Stevens received his education at the Detroit Waldorf School, the Alanson Public Schools, and the Interlochen Arts Academy.
After that, he went on to complete his undergraduate education at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. After that, he got an MFA from The New School in New York City. Stevens took up the oboe and the English horn while he was in school, and you can hear him playing both of those instruments on his CDs. When Stevens attended Hope College, he finally picked up the guitar and began to teach himself how to play.
The name Sufjan literally translates to “comes with a sword.” The most well-known bearer of this name was a character from the early days of Islamic history who went by the name Abu Sufyan. The individual who established Subud, an ecumenical spiritual society that his parents were already active members of when Stevens was born, was the one who bestowed this name upon him. Stevens got his start in the music industry as a member of the folk-rock band Marzuki, which was based in Holland, Michigan. He also played in the garage band Con Los Dudes.
In addition to that, he has played (and still plays) a variety of instruments for the Danielson Family. A Sun Came was Stevens’ first solo album, which he wrote, recorded, and published on Asthmatic Kitty Records during his senior year at Hope College. The album was titled “A Sun Came. After some time, he relocated to New York City, where he attended The New School for Social Research to participate in the writing program. During his stay at the New School, Stevens acquired an obsession with the short story form. He believed that this fixation would drive him to create a novel, but in the end, it brought him back to songwriting.
Stevens wrote and recorded the music for his second album, Enjoy Your Rabbit, while he was living in New York. The album is a song cycle that explores electronica and is centered around the animals that are associated with the Chinese zodiac. Following this, Stevens released an album called Michigan, which had a variety of folk songs and instrumentals. It pays homage to places like Detroit and Flint, as well as the Upper Peninsula and popular tourist destinations like Tahquamenon Falls and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
His own professions of faith, loss, love, and the rebirth of Michigan are intertwined throughout the character sketches and descriptions of the landscape. With the release of this album, Stevens declared his intention to make an album dedicated to each of the fifty states in the United States as part of a project he called the Fifty States Project. After the publication of the album Michigan, Stevens worked on a side project called Seven Swans, which consisted of him compiling a collection of songs that he had recorded in the past.
The album was published in March 2004. Before embarking on the tour for Seven Swans, Stevens worked for Time Warner in the children’s book division. After that, he came out with the second installment of the Fifty States initiative, which was called Illinois. The towns of Chicago, Decatur, and Jacksonville, as well as the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, the passing of a friend on Casimir Pulaski Day, the poet Carl Sandburg, and the serial killer John Wayne Gacy are some of the topics that are covered in the article about the state of Illinois.
The first 5,000 copies of the double vinyl release had a balloon sticker placed over Superman on the cover art; subsequent printings featured an empty space where the Superman picture had been. This was also the case with the CD release. The album Illinois received a great deal of praise and was awarded the maximum score possible on the review aggregate website Metacritic in 2005.
Album of the Year, Best Album Art/Packaging, and Male Artist of the Year were the three accolades that were bestowed upon Stevens at the 2006 PLUG Independent Music Awards. Illinois was selected by the editorial staff of Pitchfork, No Ripcord, and Paste magazine to be the finest album of 2005. Additionally, Stevens was awarded the 2005 Pantheon prize for Illinois, which is given to outstanding albums that have sold fewer than 500,000 copies.
Stevens made the announcement in April of 2006 that 21 pieces of music that he had selected from the recording sessions that took place in Illinois would be merged into a new album that would be titled The Avalanche and would be released on July 11, 2006. On September 11, 2006, in Nashville, Tennessee, Stevens presented the world premiere of a new composition that he titled “Majesty Snowbird.” The piece lasted for more than ten minutes. Songs for Christmas is a five-CD box collection that was published on November 21, 2006.
It comprises original songs as well as Christmas staples that were recorded each year beginning in 2001 (with the exception of 2004). To help himself ‘appreciate’ Christmas more, Stevens initially participated in the initiative so that he could use it as a personal challenge. The songs were the result of ongoing cooperation between Stevens and a variety of other individuals, including the minister Vito Aiuto; friends and family members were given copies of the songs themselves.
Although it was expected that Stevens’ following work would have some connection to future “States” initiatives, and Stevens himself would make infrequent statements pointing to the future of the project, Stevens’ work has not been included in any of those projects. Later on, Stevens stated that the project had been a “promotional gimmick” and that he had never truly intended to finish it in the first place.
“I don’t really have as much faith in my work as I used to, but I think that’s healthy,” Stevens said in an interview with Exclaim! magazine in November 2009, referring to the fact that he recently referred to his fifty-state project as a joke. He said this in response to the fact that he recently termed the project a joke. I believe that as a result, I’ve been able to be less picky about the way that I work and write. And perhaps it is appropriate for us to approach it with a lesser degree of seriousness.”
