Bassist, keyboardist, backing vocalist, major songwriter, and founder/leader of heavy metal band Iron Maiden, Stephen Percy Harris (born 12 March 1956) is an English musician. He, along with guitarist Dave Murray, is the only member to have appeared on every album since the band’s founding in 1975. Especially on Iron Maiden songs like “Run to the Hills” and “The Trooper,” Harris’s bass playing technique, known as the “gallop,” has become instantly recognizable and beloved by fans worldwide.

Harris joined a band called Influence (later renamed Gypsy’s Kiss) with lead singer Bob Verscoyle, guitarist Dave Smith, and drummer Paul Sears only ten months after purchasing his first bass.The band broke up in February 1974, after playing a few shows at the Cart and Horses bar in Maryland Point, Stratford, and the Bridgehouse in Canning Town, and Harris tried out for a band called Smiler.
Harris began penning his own songs during his time with this group, and he collaborated with future Iron Maiden members Dennis Wilcock and Doug Sampson. However, he eventually quit the band because they rejected his music, saying it was too complex. Harris left Smiler and formed Iron Maiden on December 25, 1975 the name of the band was derived from the movie The Man in the Iron Mask. Before Harris and the rest of Iron Maiden signed with EMI in 1979, he was an East End of London architectural draftsman until he was laid off. He then became a street sweeper.
Harris has been the band’s primary songwriter and composer since their inception. Songs like “The Trooper” and “Run to the Hills” highlight his signature galloping bass patterns and time changes influenced by progressive rock. Harris’s music evolved into a more experimental style over time, Harris no longer enjoys writing solo, according to guitarist Adrian Smith, and he would rather contribute “lyrics and melodies and arranging” to the songs of his band mates. Harris’s hobbies and progressive rock influences are reflected in the fact that he often writes lyrics about mythology, history, or issues inspired by books and films.
Harris’s debut solo album, British Lion, was released in September 2012. Harris kept in touch with British Lion’s Richard Taylor (vocals) and Graham Leslie (guitar) from the early ’90s, the band he managed and wrote with, and the album’s hard rock songs were written and recorded over a number of years around Iron Maiden’s tour schedule. In an interview with Kerrang! from September of 2012, Harris said he views the album as “more of a side-project” than a solo effort because he feels more “comfortable in a band environment.”
Harris told Classic Rock in August that he plans to release more solo albums and perform with the band in the future. Harris has led the group on three European club tours: in 2013 (with them), 2014 (again with them), and 2016. Harris confirmed his plans to release a live album featuring performances from all three tours on September 2, 2016. On January 17, 2020, they released their second album, titled The Burning. Lauren Harris, Harris’ eldest daughter, is a vocalist and classically trained actor who toured in support of Iron Maiden in 2006 and 2008.
She formed Six Hour Sundown in 2004, released a solo album in 2008 titled Calm Before the Storm, and is now a member of the band Kingdom of I. The Raven Age, which includes Harris’s eldest son George on guitar, opened for Iron Maiden on their 2016 Book of Souls World Tour and will do so again in 2019 for their Legacy of the beast tour. Harris married psychotherapist Lorraine Jury in 1983, and they had two children before divorcing in 1993. This period, which he later described as “probably the toughest time I’ve ever faced,” is often seen as the impetus for the more reflective tone of Iron Maiden’s next studio effort, 1995’s The X Factor. Harris’s current spouse, Emma, is the mother to his two eldest children, while his ex-wife Lorraine is the mother to Lauren, Kerry, Faye, and George.
Harris’s “Barnyard” recording and editing facility is located in the grounds of a Grade II listed building he has owned in Sheering, Essex since the 1980s. The nine-acre plot was up for auction in November of 2012. After being on the market for several years, the Property was sold in March 2022 for £3,950,000. Harris is based in the Bahamas at the moment. Harris has been a fan of West Ham United since he was 9 years old, and he played for amateur clubs as a youth before being noticed by Wally St. Pier and invited to practice with the team.
Up until that moment, Harris had dreamed of playing professionally. However, he would come to realize that “it wasn’t really what [he] wanted to do.”Harris, however, continues to play football on a regular basis with his own squad, the “Maidonians”, and to support West Ham, maintaining touch with the club and even placing the club’s crest on the Precision Bass he uses most often.
