Bio

American tennis player Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981[1] and is no longer competing professionally. She was rated No. 1 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 straight weeks, and she won the year-end No. 1 spot five times. She is regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time. She finished with 23 Grand Slam singles victories, second most in history and the most of any player during the Open Era. A new era of strength and athleticism on the women’s professional tennis circuit has been linked to the Williams sisters’ entry. With 39 major championships under her belt in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles—23 in singles, 14 in women’s doubles, and two in mixed doubles—Serena has the most among active players.

In terms of overall major championships won, she ranks second in the Open Era and tied for third overall. The most recent woman to win the Surface Slam (major championships on hard, clay, and grass courts in the same calendar year), she did it in 2015. She is also the most recent woman to concurrently hold all four major singles titles. Along with Venus, she is the most recent player to hold all four major women’s doubles championships at once. Williams’ family relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, from Compton when she was nine years old. in order for her to enrol in Rick Macci’s tennis programme, where she received more instruction.

Macci liked the fact that Williams’ father “treated his children like kids, allowed them to be young girls” while not always agreeing with him. When Williams was 10 years old, Richard stopped taking his girls to national junior tennis competitions because he wanted them to “progress slowly” and concentrate on their academics. His choice was also affected by his encounters with racism since he had overheard white parents disparaging the Williams sisters when they were competing.  Williams was rated first among under-10 players in Florida at the time and had a 46-3 record on the United States Tennis Association junior circuit.  Williams’ father withdrew his girls out of Macci’s school in 1995 while Williams was in the ninth grade and took over all of the coaching at their house.

Williams said when asked in 2000 whether it would have been better for them to have followed the typical course of playing often on the junior circuit “Everybody behaves differently. Venus and I may have just tried a different route, which was successful for us.” Williams’ parents advised their daughter to hold off on competing in professional tournaments until she was 16 years old.  In 1995, shortly after turning 14, Williams intended to enter the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland, California, as a wild-card entrant, but the WTA rejected her due to their age-eligibility requirements. She then sued the women’s tour for antitrust violations,  although she later abandoned the case at her parents’ request.  In order to get around the age eligibility requirements, she entered the Bell Challenge in Quebec, where it was held in October 1995, as a wild-card entrant.  With only two games won, she was defeated by American Annie Miller, who was 18 at the time, in the first qualifying round.

Williams sat out of the 1996 season. She lost in the opening round of three competitions the following year until winning her first match in the main draw at the Ameritech Cup Chicago in November. She defeated No. 4 Monica Seles and No. 7 Mary Pierce when ranked as high as 304. The lowest-ranked player in the Open Era to beat two top-10 opponents in a single event was, who recorded her first career victories against players rated in the top 10.  In the end, she was defeated by No. 5 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals. In 1997, she was rated No. 99.

Williams earned about $29 million in 2016, making her the highest-paid female athlete in the world. With $27 million in prize money and sponsorships, she replicated this record in 2017 when she was the only female on Forbes’ list of the 100 highest-paid athletes. In addition to being selected Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine in December 2015, she has received the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award four times. She came in at number 28 on Forbes’ list of the highest-paid athletes in the world in 2021. She is the all-time highest-paid female athlete.

Serena Williams’ parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams, also taught her elder sister Venus. She became a professional in 1995, and the US Open in 1999 saw her claim her first major singles victory. She was unbeatable from the 2002 French Open through the 2003 Australian Open, winning all four major singles championships and completing the career Grand Slam, often known as the “Serena Slam.” She won two more singles championships during the next several years, although she also experienced injuries and a drop in performance. But starting in 2007, she steadily got back into shape despite ongoing ailments, reclaiming the top spot in the global singles rankings.

Williams reclaimed her supremacy starting at the Wimbledon Championships in 2012, winning the Olympic gold and becoming the first tennis player to complete a career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles.  She completed a second “Serena Slam” by winning eight of the thirteen singles majors, including all four in a row from 2014 to 2015. She surpassed Steffi Graf’s Open Era record by winning her 23rd major singles championship in the 2017 Australian Open. After being pregnant, she took a sabbatical from playing professional tennis. Since starting back up, she has reached four major finals. Williams revealed in August 2022 that she would be leaving the tennis world and played what was supposed to be her last match at the US Open that year.

Together with her sister Venus, Williams won 14 major women’s doubles championships, going undefeated in Grand Slam doubles finals. This includes a Grand Slam that took place outside of a calendar year between the 2009 Wimbledon Championships and the 2010 French Open, which gave the sisters the No. 1 doubles ranking in the world. She and her sister hold the record for the most Olympic gold medals ever with four, three of which came in women’s doubles.  She also won two significant mixed doubles championships, both in 1998.
