Bio

The Ryan Express, also known as Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr., is a former American professional baseball pitcher and sports executive. He was born on January 31, 1947. Ryan threw for the New York Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers during his record-breaking 27-year MLB playing career, which spanned four decades. Ryan served as the Texas Rangers’ CEO and an executive adviser to the Houston Astros upon his retirement in 1993. He is regarded as one of the greatest MLB pitchers of all time and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. On January 31, 1947, Nolan Ryan was born in Refugio, Texas, a tiny community south of Victoria in the state’s southern region.

Ryan was the youngest of Martha Lee  and Lynn Nolan Ryan Srsix .’s children. The senior Ryan was in charge of the Houston Post’s newspaper delivery operation, which required him to get up early in order to prepare 1,500 newspapers for distribution across a 55-mile route. The kids were supposed to assist with the everyday chores.  Prior to moving to Alvin, Texas in Brazoria County when Nolan was six weeks old, Ryan’s family resided in the adjacent town of Woodsboro, Texas in Refugio County. Nolan used to love throwing things at everything as a kid. His father supported Nolan’s decision to play baseball since he believed it was a better use for his arm.

When he was nine years old, Ryan joined Alvin Little League Baseball. Between the ages of 11 and 12, he made the all-star team, and a few years later, he threw his first no-hitter. Ryan played a variety of positions in addition to pitcher. All four years of Ryan’s high school career were spent playing baseball for Coach Jim Watson at Alvin High School.  Ryan maintained the school record for most strikeouts in a single game for 44 years when he struck out 21 batters in a 7-inning contest.  Aaron Stewart and Josh Land, two pitchers from Alvin High School, finally equaled the record during the same week in 2009. Following his graduation from Alvin, Ryan was selected by the New York Mets as the 295th overall choice in the 12th round of the 1965 Major League Baseball draught.

Ryan joined the Mets and started pitching right away for the Mets squad in the Florida Instructional League as well as the Marion Mets in the Appalachian League. He finished the year with a 6.9 record, a 4.33 ERA, and 150 strikeouts in 120 innings. Ryan pitched for the Western Carolinas League’s Class A Greenville Mets in 1966, going 17-2 with a 2.51 ERA and 272 strikeouts in 183 innings. After that, he was promoted to the Class AA Williamsport Mets of the Eastern League, where he pitched for 19 innings while going 0-2 with a 0.95 ERA and striking out 35 hitters. In all, Ryan struck out 307 times in 202 innings in the minor leagues in 1966, leading to a late-season call-up to the New York Mets.

In 1967, Ryan threw eight games for the Mets squad in the Florida Instructional League in addition to three relief appearances for the Class AAA Jacksonville Suns and one start for the Class A Winter Haven Mets. Ryan struck out 54 batters in 34 innings in 1967. Red Murff, a scout for the New York Mets, first saw sophomore pitcher Ryan during an Alvin High School game against Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, in 1963. Ryan’s strong throws sometimes broke bones in his catchers’ hands, according to Coach Watson, who related this to Murff. Some opponents hesitated to take the field against Ryan. Murff later wrote in his report to the Mets that Ryan had “the finest arm I’ve ever seen.” The Mets subsequently chose Ryan.

Ryan led the Alvin Yellow Jackets to the Texas high school state championships in 1965 as a senior with a 19-3 record. Ryan made 20 starts while pitching in 27 games. In 12 full games, he struck out 211 batters while walking only 61. Ryan was able to toss a softball more than 100 yards in junior high. After the ninth grade, Ryan stopped playing football because he wanted to concentrate on baseball after being tackled and forced to fumble by future NFL running back Norm Bulaich.

Ryan was a right-handed pitcher who often timed pitches at speeds more than 100 mph. His whole throwing career, he maintained this velocity. Additionally, Ryan was renowned for his excellent breaking ball velocity and lethal 12-six curveballs. Ryan was an eight-time All-Star and has a 324-292  career win-loss record. He has 8,39 more career strikeouts than Randy Johnson, who is second with 5,714. Similar to how Ryan has walked more batters than any other pitcher in MLB history—over 50% more—with 2,795 bases on balls, he leads second-place Steve Carlton by 962.

A big league record, Ryan’s career batting average against is.204. The only five pitchers with more strikeouts than innings thrown who have been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame are Ryan, Pedro Martnez, Randy Johnson, Trevor Hoffman, and Sandy Koufax. Along with Jackie Robinson (whose number was retired by Major League Baseball) and Frank Robinson, Ryan is one of only three players in history to have had at least three clubs retire his number.

With seven no-hitters, Ryan has three more than any other pitcher in the record books. With twelve, he shares the record with Bob Feller for the most one-hitters. Additionally, Ryan threw 18 two-hitters. He never threw a perfect game, though, and he also never won the Cy Young Award. Only 29 players in MLB history have played in games across four separate decades, including Ryan.
