Mumba was found performing at a night club at the age of 15 by the Irish svengali Louis Walsh, who is also the manager of Boyzone and Westlife. She spent many months commuting between Denmark, Sweden, England, and Ireland, where she co-wrote and produced her first album, Gotta Tell You. After achieving another top 50 hit in the United States and five more top 10 successes in the United Kingdom, some people began to refer to her as the “black Britney Spears” of pop music; however, she has said that she does not accept this term. However, due to the lackluster performance of the album’s first single, “I’m Right Here,” in both the United States and the United Kingdom, she was released from her label, and the album was scrapped.

After that, she traveled for a number of months around Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, where she collaborated on the writing and recording of her first studio album, titled “Gotta Tell You.” The album remained on the charts for a total of six months, during which time it was finally awarded the platinum certification for having sold one million copies.
