In the course of his career, Ronnie Gene Dunn has established himself as a member of the country music duo that has garnered the most accolades. He has written a number of songs that have topped the charts as one half of the duo Brooks & Dunn. Despite not considering Arkansas to be his native state, he has cemented his position in the state’s musical heritage. Ronnie Dunn was conceived on June 1st, 1953 in Coleman, Texas. Jesse Eugene Dunn and Gladys Inez Thurmon Dunn were his parents. His mother was a devoted Baptist who resided in El Dorado in the 1960s and worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank before working as a telephone operator at Warner Brown Hospital. His father was a musician who also worked in the oil fields and drove trucks. His father was a truck driver and musician who also worked in the oil fields. By listening to Ace Cannon recordings that his father had bought for him and playing the saxophone in the El Dorado school band, which he also participated in, Dunn developed his musical ear.
He was raised in El Dorado, western Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, and during the course of twelve years, he attended thirteen different schools there. He enrolled in Abilene Christian College in Texas after finishing high school with the goal of becoming a Baptist pastor. But when it was revealed that he was performing in bars while a student there, the college asked him to leave. Following that, Dunn continued to perform in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the year 1990, Dunn traveled from Tulsa to Nashville, Tennessee. He learned about Kix Brooks for the first time while in Nashville. The two songwriters quickly started working together.
The debut studio album by Brooks & Dunn, Brand New Man, was released in 1991, and it contained the hit song “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Since then, they have written more than twenty songs and have won more awards than all other country music duos put together. Dunn and his wife Janine have been blessed with three children since their May 19, 1990 wedding. Dunn’s mother was a devoted Baptist, and both her faith and his father’s musicianship had a big influence on how good of a musician Dunn became. Dunn’s father was an oil rig worker and a musician. He was attending Abilene (Texas) Christian College with the goal of becoming a preacher when a dean gave him the alternative of dropping out of school or quitting playing music in bars. Dunn decided to major in music.
He left for Nashville after being named the Marlboro Country Music Talent Search winner in order to sign a publishing agreement with Tree Publishing. When Tim DuBois, an executive at Arista Records, introduced the two men in 1990 and recommended that they cooperate on music, he was already aware of both men’s skills as songwriters. The musicians agreed to collaborate despite their commitment to pursuing their own careers separately. Hard Workin’ Man, their second full-length recording, helped solidify their fame by debuting at number three on the Billboard country album chart when it was first released.
Their debut recording served as the lead track on the album Brand New Man, which also included the number-one single “Boot Scooting’ Boogie.” With albums like Waitin’ on Sundown, If You See Her, Steers & Stripes, and Red Dirt Road, just to name a few, Brooks & Dunn have delighted listeners of country music over the years . The mix of Dunn’s relaxed singing approach and Brooks’ fervent guitar playing style gave the group a lot of live appeals as well. Brooks & Dunn received numerous honors for performer of the year during the course of their tenure together, including four from the Academy of Country Music and one from the Country Music Association.
From their early run of entertaining honky-tonk successes to the skilled musicianship on Cowboy Town, they were able to leverage their partnership into an astonishing amount of constant success. By 2007, Brooks & Dunn had broadened their range of musical styles, including some straightforward rock and roll, a rare vintage country song cover, and even a few somber ballads. They had already received numerous CMA and ACM honors in addition to two Grammy Awards. In 2010, Brooks and Dunn finished their concert tour and made the decision to part ways. Dunn’s debut solo album, Ronnie Dunn, came out in 2011, and Kix Brooks’ solo career started the following year. The residency performance, titled Reba, Brooks & Dunn: Together in Vegas, ran at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas all through 2015. Both Brooks & Dunn and Reba McEntire performed during the occasion. After the release of their album Reboot in 2019, on which they rerecorded their hits with younger country musicians, Brooks & Dunn continued to play together.
Brooks & Dunn have received their “Entertainers of the Year” award from the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music once each, and three times from the ACM. The Adventures of Slim and Howdy, the pair’s debut book, was published in 2008 and co-author Bill Fitzhugh contributed to it as well. Dunn received recognition when he was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame during the 2002–2003 academic year. The couple announced their decision to end their relationship following their final tour in 2010 in August of that year.
