Roger Staubach Bio

Roger Thomas Staubach (born February 5, 1942) is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He is also known by the nicknames “Roger the Dodger,” “Captain America,” and “Captain Comeback.” After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, where he had previously been awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1963, he went on to serve in the United States Navy, including a deployment to Vietnam.

After signing with Dallas in 1969, Staubach spent his whole 11-year professional playing career with the same franchise. He was the starting quarterback for four of the franchise’s trips to the Super Bowl, which the team won four times under his leadership. He was the quarterback for the Cowboys when they won Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII under his leadership.

As a result of his performance in Super Bowl VI, Roger Staubach was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player, making him the first of four players to win both the Heisman Trophy and the Super Bowl MVP award. The other three are Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen, and Desmond Howard. During his 11 years as a player in the NFL, he was selected for the Pro Bowl six times. Staubach is the first quarterback to ever win the Heisman Trophy and be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is one of 10 athletes to ever accomplish this feat overall.

Before he retired in 2018, he served as the executive chairman of the Americas area for the real estate company Jones Lang LaSalle. He is considered to be one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the game.[3]Staubach was the only child of Elizabeth (née Smyth) and Robert Staubach. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the United States. He is of mixed German and English ancestry and spent his childhood in Silverton, which is located in the northeastern suburbs of Cincinnati. When he was younger, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

He went to St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, and in 1960, he received his diploma from the Catholic high school Purcell High School in Cincinnati, which is now known as Purcell Marian High School. Staubach attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell for one year prior to beginning his career in the Navy. During his time there, he established a new school record for throwing yards and scored a total of 18 touchdowns. In 1961, while attending the United States Naval Academy, Staubach was the starting quarterback for the Midshipmen.

In 1962, while he was a third-class midshipman (a sophomore), he was given his first opportunity to play in the game that took place on October 6 against the University of Minnesota. This was the third game of the season. As the Minnesota defense, headed by Bobby Bell and Carl Eller, was dominating in its 21–0 triumph, he removed the starting quarterback Ron Klemick and took over. Staubach had a throwing record of 0–2 and was sacked twice for a total loss of 24 yards.

One week later, when they were playing Cornell University and the offense was struggling, head coach Wayne Hardin decided to insert Roger Staubach into the game to see if he could help improve the team’s offense. During the game, he accounted for six of Navy’s scores, threw for 99 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 88 yards and another score, helping Navy to a 41–0 victory. After waiting a few weeks, Staubach was given another starting position in the historic Army–Navy game. The game was attended by President John F. Kennedy, who also tossed the coin to start the game. Staubach threw for two touchdowns and ran for another one while leading his squad to an upset victory over Army by a score of 34–14.

In 1963, during his second class season (junior season), he led the Midshipmen to a 9–1 regular season record and a final ranking of No. 2 in the nation. He also earned the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy.  In addition, he was awarded the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy. In October, he was featured on the cover of Time magazine; had President Kennedy not been killed in November 1963, he also would have been featured on the cover of the edition of Life magazine published on November 29, 1963.

In the 1964 Cotton Bowl, the Midshipmen were defeated by the top-ranked University of Texas squad, who went on to win the national championship. The game took place on New Year’s Day. In an earlier game of that season, Navy defeated Notre Dame on the road by a score of 35–14 under the leadership of quarterback Roger Staubach. The next time the Navy prevailed over Notre Dame was in 2007, which is 43 years after their previous victory.

During his three years at Navy, quarterback Roger Staubach completed 292 of 463 passes for 4,253 yards of total offense, 18 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. His total offense yards set a new record for the institution. The Heisman Trophy was last won by a player from a military academy, and that player was Staubach. In his senior year of 1964, he suffered an injury to his left heel in the opening game triumph over Penn State. As a result, he was unable to play in the following four games, and the Navy concluded the season with a record of 3–6–1.

During the graduation ceremony that followed the completion of Staubach’s senior season, the Naval Academy honored him by retiring his jersey number (12). The College Football Hall of Fame honored Mr. Staubach with induction in the year 1981. On the list of the Top 25 Players in College Football History that ESPN compiled in 2007, Roger Staubach was rated ninth.
