Since September 2006, American businessman Roger Goodell has presided as the National Football League’s (NFL) commissioner. In 1982, he used a letter-writing campaign to get a job as an intern with the league. After that, he served in a number of important roles for then-Commissioner Paul Tagliabue until being named the NFL’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in 2001. The first two players to get suspensions under the new rule were Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry and Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones. He had a 21-10 lead after the fourth round and just needed one more vote to win by a two-thirds majority after the fifth ballot when two owners switched their allegiance to him. On August 8, 2006, Tagliabue selected him to be his replacement, and on September 1, when Tagliabue was compelled to resign, he took over.
He attended Bronxville High School in Bronxville, New York, where he was a three-sport standout in baseball, basketball, and football. As a senior, he served as captain of each team.
He attended Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania after being recruited by a number of institutions to play football as a defensive back, but his playing career was cut short by a knee injury in his first year.He got the school’s Walter Hudson Baker Prize for excellence in economics upon graduating in 1981 with a degree in economics.
