Robert Frederick Smith, an American businessman, was born on December 1, 1962. He is currently the chairman and chief executive officer of Vista Equity Partners, an investment firm he founded that has approximately $26 billion in assets as of September 2016. Smith ranks #274 on Forbes’ 2016 list of the wealthiest persons in the United States, making him the second-wealthiest African-American on the list after only Oprah Winfrey. His fortune was assessed at $2.5 billion in 2016, making him the 688th richest person in the world according to Forbes.
Both of Robert F. Smith’s parents got doctorates and worked as professors, making him a fourth-generation Coloradan. In a Denver neighborhood that was predominantly Black American, he went to a middle school that had only recently become integrated.
However, he was informed that only college students were qualified for internships at Bell Labs, which was disappointing news. Smith persisted, calling once a day. He got the job when an M.I.T. student didn’t show up, and he spent the summer doing a reliability test on semiconductors. Prior to attending Columbia Business School, his work at Kraft General Foods resulted in two patents in the United States and two in Europe. Smith was honored as the class’s top student.
From 1994 to 2000, he was employed at Goldman Sachs, first in New York and then in Silicon Valley, as a technology investment banker. As Co-Head of Enterprise Systems and Storage, he oversaw the implementation and advise on more than $50 billion in M&A activity, including transactions with Apple, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, eBay, and Yahoo. When he joined Goldman Sachs, he made history by becoming the firm’s first mergers and acquisitions and international business expert in the field of technology.
Smith founded Vista Equity Partners in 2000 and currently serves as its Chairman and CEO. More than $26 billion in funding has been committed to Vista. Vista has focused its efforts on the commercial sector, namely on the demand for enterprise-level software, data, and technology-enabled solutions.
According to the HEC-Dow Jones yearly assessment, created and maintained by Professor Oliver Gottschalk, Vista Equity Partners is the best private equity firm in the world as of January 2015. Industry consulting firm Preqin found that Vista’s third fund, founded during the private equity boom, returned $2.46 for every dollar invested, significantly outperforming its competitors. In October of 2014, Vista closed Fund V, its largest fund to date, at $5.8 billion.
Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights presented Smith with their Ripple of Hope Award; the Reginald F. Lewis Achievement Award was bestowed upon him; and the Robert Toigo Foundation named him their Humanitarian of the Year. Smith was also awarded an honorary Doctor of International Affairs degree from American University’s School of International Service. Project Realize, which he dubs “Free Market Philanthropy,” was founded with the intention of fusing the best aspects of the free market economy with the core American ideals of charity and altruism.
Smith serves as the inaugural head of the Fund II Foundation and as its director. He serves on the boards of Columbia Business School’s Board of Overseers and Cornell University’s Engineering College Council in addition to leading the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization and the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Smith serves on the Board of Trustees at Carnegie Hall.
Smith became the Carnegie Hall Board Chairman, making history as the first African American to hold that position. Smith is not only the president and founding director of the Fund II Foundation but also a proponent of diversity and a visionary who works toward a more equitable business and academic environment. The Austin, Texas-based Fund II Foundation prioritizes the preservation of African-American cultural institutions, the advancement of minority participation in the arts and STEM fields, and the promotion of the American ideal of the invention.
The 2019 Morehouse College graduating class will be debt-free thanks to the words of Smith, founder and Chairman/CEO of Vista Equity Partners. Smith canceled more than $34 million in student and parent loan debt. Because of his gift, the Student Freedom Initiative was created to offer low-income students, such as those attending HBCUs, an alternative to traditional student loans.
Due to his early involvement in the civil rights movement, Smith took receiving the Ripple of Hope Award from Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights in 2010 as a great honor. Forbes recognized Smith as a “Greatest Living Business Genius” in 2017. He received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy and induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2019. With his vision for the future, Smith was recognized by Time as one of the TIME100 most influential people of 2020.
Smith is a backer of Hidden Empire Film Group and Deon Taylor. The film’s executive producer is John Lewis, a former representative from Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives. The true stories of the original Freedom Riders inspired the movie. Smith now holds the prestigious position of Honorary Ranger. In 2018, he was recognized for his decades-long commitment to preserving African American heritage in national parks by the National Park Foundation.
Smith signed 2017 Giving Pledge before any other African American. Smith became the first African American to hold the position of Carnegie Hall Chairman in 2016. Smith was raised by two professors; both of his parents earned doctorates in education. Smith joined Alpha Phi Alpha while he was a student at Cornell University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1985. When Smith was younger, he wanted to be a chemical engineer because he thought it was the modern-day equivalent of becoming an alchemist.
