Mark Freuder Knopfler was born on August 12, 1949. His lyrics and cutting guitar work in Dire Straits propelled the band to international fame, and he quickly rose to notoriety as the band’s frontman.
Mark Knopfler has firmly established himself as an internationally popular solo artist and collaborator with an established organic base, thanks to works like 2004’s Shangri-La, 2006’s All the Roadrunning, and 2012’s Privateering.
His English-born mother was a schoolteacher, while his Italian-born father was an architect. In an interview with Dan Forte, Mark Knopfler recalled how his uncle’s piano playing sparked his interest in music: “I heard my Uncle Kingsley playing boogie-woogie when I was about eight or nine, and I thought that those three chords were the most amazing things in the world – still do.” When Mark Knopfler was seven years old, his family moved from Australia to Newcastle Upon Tyne in England. Knopfler started learning guitar on a cheap Hofner model until his father bought him a Fender electric guitar not long after. At the age of 16, Knopfler and his buddies recorded a never-released demo single, and their singing group became popular enough to appear on a local television show.
In 1968, Knopfler got his start in the journalism industry when he was hired by the Yorkshire Evening Post. He had attended Harlow Technical College in the past for his journalistic education. Knopfler’s distinctive fingerpicking style was honed in Leeds, where he formed a band with fellow guitarist Steve Phillips under the name Duolian String Pickers.
After receiving his degree from Leeds in 1973, Knopfler moved to London to join the pub rock band Brewer’s Droop on drums. Knopfler eventually became a professor at Loughton College in Essex after leaving the band for a little time. Knopfler befriended other local musicians, and the result was the formation of the band the Café Racers. David Knopfler, Mark’s brother who is also a musician and songwriter, introduced him to John Illsley who plays guitar and bass. One night, Mark asked Illsley to sit in on bass for the Café Racers, and shortly after, Illsley, David, and John all moved in together to make music. Mark first called his new band Café Racers, but Pick Withers quickly came up with the name Dire Straits.
Following the promotion of their demo tape by BBC music DJ Charlie Gillett, Dire Straits’ manager Ed Bicknell and Polygram A&R man John Stainze took note of the band. Records took over the distribution of their album in the United States. Due in large part to Mark Knopfler’s deft lead guitar work, Dylanesque vocals, and emotionally resonant songs, the self-titled debut album by Dire Straits became a surprise hit single in the United States and the United Kingdom in the fall of 1978. The album itself quickly followed the single into the charts.
Brothers in Arms, released by Dire Straits in 1985, was the best-selling album in the United Kingdom in the 1980s and has sold over nine million copies in the United States alone. The band, who had multiple lineup changes from 1978 to 1995, had their first of many commercial hits with this album. Knopfler began venturing into uncharted artistic ground after the economic success of Dire Straits. After being asked to play lead guitar on Slow Train Coming in 1979, he joined Bob Dylan’s band again in 1983 as the album’s producer and band leader for Infidels.
From Dire Straits to Randy Newman and Willy DeVille, Knopfler has produced for a wide range of musicians. Knopfler has an impressive list of artists he’s worked with as a session guitarist, including Van Morrison, Phil Lynott, Steely Dan, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Cliff Richard, and Scott Walker. Knopfler’s early influences included the renowned guitarist Hank Marvin of the Shadows, and he wrote the song “Private Dancer” for Tina Turner’s comeback album of the same name.
The 1983 Scottish comedy he scored, “Local Hero,” gave Knopfler his first major break in the film industry. Critics and moviegoers alike were impressed by the score, which was later reprised in other films like Cal, The Princess Bride, Last Exit to Brooklyn, and Wag the Dog. Knopfler agreed to let Weird Al Yankovic parody “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits for the film UHF as long as he was allowed to re-record his guitar parts for the parody. Weird Al readily accepted Knopfler’s request.
