Rita Dove Bio

Rita Dove was born in the city of Akron Oh, io. Her father, Ray A. Dove, pioneered the movement for integration in American business and worked as a scientist. Her parents pushed her to maintain a steady study schedule and read extensively. Rita has always profoundly appreciated music and poetry, even from a young age. She was the captain of the majorette team at her high school while also playing the cello in the symphony there. As one of the graduates from her high school class who stood out the most, she was selected to be a Presidential Scholar and was invited to the White House.

She started to take her writing more seriously after she enrolled at Miami University in Ohio. Following her graduation from summa cum laude in 1973 with a degree in English, she competed for and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the University of Tubingen in Germany for two years.

After that, she enrolled in the famous Writers’ Workshop offered by the University of Iowa, from which she graduated with a master’s degree in 1977. While she was attending the University of Iowa, she became acquainted with another Fulbright scholar, a young author from Germany called Fred Viebahn. 1979 was the year that they tied the knot. Dove was an instructor in the creative writing program at Arizona State University from 1981 to 1989.

Before Rita Dove released her first poetry book, The Yellow House on the Corner, in 1980, she had already garnered a national reputation for her work via publication in periodicals and anthologies. After that, in 1983, she published Museum; in 1986, she published Thomas and Beulah, a collection of poetry loosely based on her grandparents’ lives and including several interconnected pieces.

The year 1987 saw Thomas and Beulah win the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. Her appointment was for two years. She was the youngest person to obtain this most fantastic formal accolade in American letters and the first African American person to do so. At the event that was held to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the United States Capitol building in the autumn of 1994, she performed her poem “Lady Freedom Among Us.”

Other works by Rita Dove include the collections of poetry Grace Notes, Selected Poems, and Mother Love, as well as the novel Through the Ivory Gate. Her book Fifth Sunday is a collection of short tales. At the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 1986, her verse play “The Darker Face of the Earth” was given its world premiere performance. 1997 saw the staging of an additional version of the space at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, District of Columbia.

Dove has introduced her poems to viewers of television shows such as CNN and NBC’s Today Show via her appearances on such programs. Her life and accomplishments were the subject of a one-hour prime-time program shown on Public Broadcasting. She has been on the same stages as Charlie Rose, Big Bird, and Bill Moyers on television. On the radio, she is known for hosting a show on Billie Holliday for National Public Radio and appearing as a regular guest on Prairie Home Companion, which Garrison Keillor hosts.

She joined former President Jimmy Carter in extending a warm welcome to a Nobel Laureates in Literature gathering at the Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta, Georgia, which was held in conjunction with the 1996 Olympic Games. The same year, a performance of “Umoja — Each One of Us Counts,” a symphonic piece for orchestra and narrator, occurred in Atlanta’s Symphony Hall.

Rita Dove’s text was read by Andrew Young, who had previously served as mayor of Atlanta and as an ambassador to the United Nations. In 2000, the Library of Congress celebrated its bicentennial, and Dove served the Library once again as a “special consultant in poetry.” She has lived in Virginia for a very long period, and from 2004 through 2006, she held the position of Poet Laureate for the state.

Dove has had a lifetime passion for music, but it has shown itself differently. She has contributed text to the works of Tania Leon, Bruce Dolphe, and Alvin Singleton, all of whom are composers. Her song cycle “Seven for Luck,” to which John Williams contributed the music, was performed on a television program broadcast by PBS with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Sonata Mulattica is a cycle of poetry that she released in 2009 under the title Sonata Mulattica. The poems chronicle the narrative of the African-European musician George Polgreen Bridgetower, who lived in the 19th century, and his tumultuous association with Ludwig van Beethoven.

In 2011, President Obama honored Rita Dove with the National Medal of Arts for her contributions to the arts. The Penguin Anthology of 20th-Century American Poetry was compiled and edited by Dove during the same year. Rita Dove aggressively defended her selections in published pieces and television appearances when several reviewers objected to her decision to include certain less well-known poets in her anthology at the cost of more well-known ones.

An American Poet, a documentary film, was released in 2014 and focused on Dove’s life and work as a poet. She was awarded the Poetry and People International Prize in Guangdong, China, in 2015 and presented with the Stone Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2016. Rita Dove has been awarded 25 honorary degrees during her career, the most recent being from Yale University in 2014.

Rita Dove and her husband make their home in Charlottesville, where she holds the position of Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She spends her leisure time perfecting her classical voice and playing the viola da gamba, an instrument that predates the modern cello and dates back to the 17th century. In 2016, a complete collection of her poems titled Collected Poems 1974-2004 was made available to the public.
