Bio

Wykeham, Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton Fiennes is an English stage and screen actor better known by his stage name Ralph Fiennes. For his love of Shakespearean plays and his portrayals of characters from plays like “Hamlet,” “Coriolanus,” “Richard II,” etc., he is well-known in the British theatre community. With “Coriolanus,” he made his directorial debut and once again showed his affection for literary characters, particularly those created by Shakespeare.

In London, where he began his playing career, Fiennes was connected to theatres including “The Open Air Theatre” and “National Theatre.” With his gloomy and voluminous portrayal of Bronte’s “Heathcliff” in “Wuthering Heights,” he made his film debut. Despite the movie’s moderate success, it was unable to provide him the worldwide recognition he needed. But Spielberg’s play about a Jewish slaughter, “Schindler’s List,” made moviemakers all around the globe sit up and take note.

His iconic depiction of the devilishly desensitized “Amon Goth” brought him widespread recognition and several honors, including the “BAFTA” and “Golden Globe.” Fiennes is a skilled performer who has portrayed a range of characters in genres including drama, romance-comedy, drama, and thriller. Mark Fiennes and Jennifer Lash welcomed Ralph Fiennes into the world on December 22, 1962, in Ipswich, England. His mother was a writer, while his father was a farmer and photographer. His five siblings also work in the entertainment business.

From 1983 to 1985, Fiennes studied at the “Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.” He soon began his theatrical career, appearing at venues including “Open Air Theatre,” “Regent’s Park,” and “National Theatre.” He played the lead role in the film adaptation of John le Carre’s book “The Constant Gardener” that same year. It was shot in Kibera’s shantytown. The group founded “The Constant Gardener Trust” to provide elementary education in the region after being alarmed by the residents of Kibera’s substandard living circumstances.

He worked on films including “Faith Healer”, which led to a nomination for a “Tony Award,” during the 2000s. He received a “British Independent Film Award” for “In Bruges” and a “Golden Globe” for “The Duchess”. The majority of his honors—including the BAFTA, the Boston Society of Film Critics Award, the Chicago Film Critics Association Award, the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Award, the London Film Critics Circle Award, etc.—were given to him for “Schindler’s List.”

The Constant Gardener won the Evening Standards British Film Award, Hamlet won the Tony Award, The Hurt Locker won the Gotham Independent Film Award, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – 2 won the People’s Choice Award, and the San Diego Film Critics Society Award, and so on.

He had an appearance in “The Hurt Locker,” which won an Academy Award. He starred in “Skyfall” after making his directorial debut with “Coriolanus” in 2011. In addition to directing the 2013 movie “The Invisible Woman,” he also played the protagonist. In 2015, Fiennes was featured in the suspenseful film “A Bigger Splash” by Luca Guadagnino.

In the 2016 animated feature “Kubo and the Two Strings,” he provided the voice of “Raiden the Moon King.” In “The Lego Batman Movie” the following year, he also provided the voice of British butler “Alfred Pennyworth.” In “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” in 2019, he returned to the character of “Alfred Pennyworth.”

He made his cinematic debut in 1992 as “Heathcliff” in the adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte. He was given the chance to take on a contentious part in Peter Greenaway’s controversial film “The Baby of Macon” the following year.

Fiennes played the most memorable and significant role of his life in 1993. In Steven Spielberg’s film “Schindler’s List,” which was based on the Nazis’ mass extermination of Jews, he portrayed “Amon Goth” in the role. In 1996’s epic love story set during World War II, “The English Patient,” he delivered another strong performance. He and Kirstin Scott-Thomas played the key characters in the film, and he was nominated for an “Oscar.”

In the latter part of the 1990s, Fiennes appeared in films including “Oscar and Lucinda”, “The Avengers”, and “The Prince of Egypt,” an animated musical, where he provided the voice of “Ramesses II”.He appeared in the drama film Sunshine in 1999, which earned him a “European Film Award.” The same year saw the premiere of the film “Onegin,” which his sister Martha directed. In 2000, Fiennes returned to the theatre and starred in Richard II and Coriolanus, both plays by William Shakespeare. Additionally, he appeared on television in the drama documentary “How Proust Can Change Your Life,” which was based on the life of renowned author Proust. He appeared in David Cronenberg’s critically acclaimed thriller “Spider” in 2002. Additionally, he played the role of “Chris Marshall” in the romantic comedy “Maid in Manhattan.”

Lord Voldemort, the film’s main antagonist, was played by Fiennes in 2005’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” In the sequels “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2,” he also made an appearance.

Fiennes attended St. Kieran’s College before moving to County Waterford’s “Newtown School.” His family relocated to Salisbury, where he attended “Bishop Wordsworth’s School” to complete his education. Before determining that he wanted to be an actor, he first pursued painting at “Chelsea College of Art.”
