The American political activist, author, speaker, and lawyer Ralph Nader is well-known for his work on issues related to consumer protection, environmental protection, and governmental reform.Nader, a son of Lebanese immigrants, studied at Harvard Law School and Princeton University. Nathra Nader initially worked at a textile factory after relocating to Connecticut before starting a bakery and café. Ralph Nader sometimes assisted his father in running the family business and served as a delivery boy for the Winsted Register Citizen. After completing his education at The Gilbert School, Nader enrolled at Princeton University. Despite being given a scholarship to Princeton, his father had him turn it down on the grounds that the family could afford his tuition and the money should instead be given to a student who couldn’t afford it.
After completing a final thesis on “Lebanese Agriculture,” Nader earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1955. Nader first gained national attention in 1965 when his investigative report Unsafe at Any Speed was published. Hazardous at Any Speed provided a critical analysis of the automotive industry by asserting that many American cars were typically unsafe to drive, despite the author having previously exhibited interest in concerns of vehicle safety as a law student. To back up his claims, Nader looked into the case records from more than 100 lawsuits that were now being brought against the Chevrolet Corvair by General Motors.
The book quickly became a best-seller, but it also sparked a nasty response from General Motors, which tried to discredit Nader by tapping his phone to find lewd material and, when that failed, by employing prostitutes to catch him in an inappropriate setting. Nader informed Senator Abe Ribicoff that he believed he was being watched while working at the time as an unpaid consultant for the senator. Ribicoff organised a hearing where GM CEO James Roche was invited. When questioned under oath, Roche acknowledged that the business had engaged a private investigation firm to look into Nader. With the profits from the $425,000 settlement he reached after suing GM for privacy invasion, Nader founded the advocacy group known as the Center for the Study of Responsive Law.
Unsafe at Any Speed was published a year after which the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act was overwhelmingly passed by Congress. According to John William McCormack, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Ralph Nader’s “crusading spirit of one guy who felt he could do anything” was responsible for the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act’s passing.
Nader started his studies at Harvard Law School after graduating from Princeton, but he rapidly became disinterested in his classes. Nader regularly skipped courses when a student at Harvard in order to travel across the country and do fieldwork on migrant worker and Native American rights. In 1958, he graduated with an LL.B. from Harvard. In his adolescence, Nader connected with libertarian thought, but in his early 20s, he began to distance himself from it. Despite admitting that he “didn’t like public housing because it unjustly disadvantageed landowners,” Nader’s opinion was transformed once he “saw the slums and what landlords did.” Nader joined the American Army as a chef after receiving his degree from Harvard and was stationed at Fort Dix.
Nader ran for president of the United States four times: twice with the Green Party, once with the Reform Party, and once as an independent in 2008. Nader said that throughout each campaign, he tried to draw attention to underreported problems and the alleged need for election change. He earned close to three million votes in the 2000 election, but he also sparked controversy with claims that his campaign helped Republican candidate George W. Bush defeat Democratic contender Al Gore in a tight race.
Nader, a two-time Nieman Fellow, is the author or co-author of more than twenty books, and his life and career were the focus of the documentary An Unreasonable Man, which had its premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. He has often been included on lists of the “100 Most Influential Americans,” such as those from Life, Time, and The Atlantic. He was referred to as a “dissident” by the New York Times.
