A professional basketball club from the United States, the Phoenix Suns are headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. They participate in NBA competition as a part of the Western Conference Pacific Division of the league. The Suns play their home games at the Footprint Center and are the only club in their division that isn’t headquartered in California. There are four major league sports teams with homes in the Phoenix region, but only the Suns claim to represent the city. At the beginning of the 1968–1969 NBA season, the Suns and the Milwaukee Bucks from Milwaukee were the two new teams. Up until the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League moved from St. Louis in 1988, they were the only major professional sports franchise in the Phoenix market and in the entire state of Arizona for more than 20 years.
At Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, sometimes known as the “Madhouse on McDowell,” which is situated a little northwest of downtown Phoenix, the Suns played their first 24 seasons. A group of investors headed by public company owner Karl Eller and Donald Pitt, Don Diamond, Bhavik Darji, Marvin Meyer, and Richard L. Bloch founded the franchise. Entertainers including Andy Williams, Bobbie Gentry, and Ed Ames were among the other minority proprietors. Phoenix was criticised for being “too hot,” “too tiny,” and “too far away,” according to many, including the then-NBA commissioner J. Walter Kennedy.
The Phoenix metropolitan region was expanding quickly, and the Suns would have natural rivals in cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. Nevertheless, this continued. At the age of 28, Jerry Colangelo, a player scout for the Chicago Bulls, a team that had been established two years earlier, joined Johnny “Red” Kerr as the Suns’ first general manager. Phoenix concluded their first season at 16-66, 25 games outside of the last playoff slot, in contrast to Colangelo and Kerr’s first-year success in Chicago, where the Bulls finished with a first-year expansion record of 33 victories and a playoff berth.
Goodrich and Van Arsdale were named to the All-Star Game in their first year with the Suns. After spending two seasons with the Suns, Goodrich left for his old club, the Lakers, but Van Arsdale remained a Sun for the remainder of his playing career and later served as Phoenix’s head coach. That year, the Suns’ last-place record forced the expansion-mate Bucks and the Suns to flip a coin to determine who would get the first overall choice in the 1969 NBA Draft. While Phoenix decided to choose Florida centre Neal Walk, Milwaukee won the flip and the opportunity to select UCLA centre Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Suns had a better record in 1969–70, going 39–43, but they were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers, who would go on to win the Western Conference. The Suns had 48 and 49 wins respectively in each of the next two seasons, but they failed to make the playoffs in any of those years and did not return to the postseason until 1976. Connie Hawkins’ dramatic performance was the franchise’s main appeal during this time period.
Bloch persisted in his efforts, and on January 22, 1968, the NBA Board of Governors awarded Phoenix and Milwaukee franchises with an entrance fee of $2 million. In a contest to name the team sponsored by The Arizona Republic, the moniker “Suns” was officially picked from among 28,000 submissions. The winner received $1,000 and season tickets for the club’s first season. Scorpions, Rattlers, Thunderbirds, Wranglers, Mavericks, Tumbleweeds, Mustangs, and Cougars were all favoured over Suns. After paying a local artist $5,000 to create the team’s emblem, Stan Fabe, who ran a commercial printing business in Tucson, created the team’s first famous logo for about $200. They weren’t happy with the outcomes, however.
Future Hall of Famer Gail Goodrich and Dick Van Arsdale were significant selections for the Suns in the 1968 NBA expansion draught. The franchise started competing in 1968 as an expansion team, and its early years were marked by mediocrity. However, things started to turn around in the 1970s after Paul Westphal teamed up with Dick Van Arsdale and Alvan Adams, and the team eventually made it to the NBA Finals in 1976, in what is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in NBA history. But after their failure to win a title, the Suns spent much of the 1980s rebuilding around Walter Davis until adding Kevin Johnson in 1988.
Under Johnson, the Suns made a franchise-record thirteen consecutive playoff appearances, remained a consistent title contender throughout the 1990s, and advanced to the 1993 NBA Finals after trading for Charles Barkley, a stalwart NBA All-Star. They also benefited from the contributions of Tom Chambers and Dan Majerle. The squad, though, would once again fall short of a title and enter an era of mediocrity until the early 2000s.
After being traded from Phoenix six years earlier and going on to have a successful career with the Dallas Mavericks, Steve Nash became a free agent in 2004 and helped the Suns go back into the playoffs. Under head coach Mike D’Antoni, the Suns established a reputation for having a rapid, dynamic offence with players like Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, and Amar’e Stoudemire. This allowed them to tie a club record for victories in the 2004–05 season. Following two consecutive top-two Finances in the Conference, the Suns were again pushed into a rebuild after failing to win the NBA title.
The Suns made it to the 2021 NBA Finals after adding Chris Paul, establishing a foursome with their youthful core of Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Mikal Bridges after going 10 seasons in a row without making the playoffs. The Suns have the second-highest winning percentage of any club that has never claimed an NBA title, ranking them seventh all-time in the NBA. Phoenix has had 11 Hall of Famers on the roster, and Barkley and Nash have both earned NBA Most Valuable Player awards while playing for the franchise.
