Phil Lynott Bio

Phil Lynott was born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. His birth in 1948 was the product of a brief romance between his parents. After he and his mom were accepted into a shelter for single moms, he was christened there. Despite her relocation to Manchester, Philomena maintained contact with Lynott and received regular financial support from Lynott’s father. She went on to have two more children, both of whom were placed for adoption. At first, Philip Lynott went to school in Manchester. In 1957, his mom shipped him off to Dublin to live with his grandparents. Sarah and Frank Lynott, his grandparents, did a great job of raising him.

His mother stayed with him in Manchester the whole time. Dennis Keeley was her business partner when she later managed the Clifton Grange Hotel. Irish singer-songwriter and musician Philip Parris Lynott. He is most known for his contributions to the hard rock band Thin Lizzy as a founding member, lead vocalist, bassist, and major composer. Once the band broke up, he experienced career success but also drug issues, mainly heroin addiction.

Lynott fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Grand Slam, Black Eagles, and Skid Row, and is best known for his innovative lyrical talents and unusual plectrum-based style of playing bass. He attended Moss Side High School in Manchester after being born in the West Midlands. He was taken in by his grandparents in 1957 and nurtured in Dublin.

Nevertheless, he maintained a tight relationship with his mom all into adulthood. Lynott grew up in a loving family and was well-liked by his peers. He loved the sport of football and cheered on Manchester United with all his might. Lynott married Leslie Crowther’s daughter in 1980, and the couple eventually had two children together. The Irish performer passed away at the age of 36 on January 4, 1986, from heart failure and pneumonia. Lynott is still fondly remembered in the rock community. A memorial statue honoring him was erected in Dublin that same year, 2005.

It was Phil Lynott’s uncle Timothy who first got him interested in music. He became a lead singer for the first time with the Black Eagles in 1965. As he was a student at Christian Brothers School in Crumlin, he ran into Brian Downey. Lynott joined the Liffey Beats at Brian’s request. Lynott switched bands from Liffey Beats, with whom he had played for some years, to Kama Sutra. He gained experience as a frontman and learned how to engage an audience.

He formed the band Skid Row in 1968 with Brendan Shiels on bass and Noel Bridgeman. Covers of songs like “Hey Jude” and “Eight Miles High” were among those released by the band. Eventually, Lynott had to leave the band because of issues with his tonsils. Skid Row no longer needed him by the time he had fully healed. After firing one of his best friends, Shiels felt bad and started teaching bass to Lynott. Lynott later joined forces with Downey to establish the band Orphanage, which also included Quigley on bass and Staunton on guitar. The group’s repertoire included both original material and interpretations of songs by Free, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Beck.

Lynott and Downey met Eric Wrixon, a keyboardist, and Eric Bell, a guitarist, near the year’s end in 1969. The group eventually coalesced into the band Thin Lizzy and saw significant success on the concert circuit. Lynott departed the band in the middle of recording their second studio album, Shades of a Blue Orphanage, to form a new band named Baby Face with Ian Paice and Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple. Yet, he was back with Thin Lizzy in a week.

By the year’s end of 1972, Thin Lizzy caught its first big break when they were hired as Slade’s opening act for a UK tour. The band’s rock cover of the Irish folk tune “Whiskey in the Jar” was a smashing success when it was released a year later. By the middle of 1974, Lynott’s band Thin Lizzy had already begun to disintegrate as members quit one by one. After the publication of 1976’s ‘Jailbreak,’ which featured new members Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham on guitar, the band’s fortunes began to turn around.

The tune “The Boys Are Back in Town” by Jailbreak was a huge hit around the world and even topped the charts in Ireland. Thin Lizzy, having achieved commercial success at long last, went on a number of international tours. Johnny the Fox, Bad Reputation, Live and Dangerous, and Black Rose: A Rock Legend were just a few of the band’s subsequent successful albums.

Thin Lizzy’s commercial success had begun to decline by the early 1980s. Around this time, Lynott developed a heroin habit that would ultimately lead to the dissolution of Thin Lizzy in 1983. Lynott’s multitasking began in earnest in the early 1980s. Among the many artists he recorded with was Bob Geldof, for whom he provided backing vocals on the track “Blast Furnace.” They released a holiday song in 1979 titled “A Merry Jingle,” which featured both Thin Lizzy and the Pistols’ Paul Cook and Steve Jones.

Albums like “Solo in Soho” from 1980—from which came to the hits “King’s Call” and “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”—marked the beginning of Lynott’s successful solo career. Later, the Irish musician frequently worked with Moore, a former band colleague, on songs like “Parisienne Walkways” and “Out in the Fields,” which peaked at #8 and #5 on the UK singles chart, respectively. He later joined forces with Laurence Archer, Doish Nagle, Mark Stanway, and Robbie Brennan to form the band Grand Slam. The band members eventually drifted apart.

Lynott collaborated with English R&B singer Junior Giscombe from 1983 until 1985. Unfortunately, none of his publications saw print. His most recent release was a song titled “Nineteen.” In 1984, Lynott’s drug use began to negatively impact his marriage to Crowther. His health rapidly deteriorated in his final years due to alcoholism and drug use.

In December 1985, the Irish musician was told he had septicemia. When his health declined, he needed to be placed on a ventilator. Lynott, who was 36 years old when he passed away on January 4, 1986, succumbed to pneumonia and heart failure in the hospital’s intensive care unit. On the anniversary of his death, Smiley Bolger, one of his closest friends, has been holding a celebration since 1987. Former members of Thin Lizzy are among the musicians who have performed at the yearly “Vibe for Philo” festival. In 2005, a bronze statue of Phil Lynott, created by Dublin-based artist Paul Daly, was installed on Harry Street.
