East Finchley was born on June 25, 1963. His Greek Cypriot father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, moved to England in the 1950s. He ran a dining establishment that he owned. His English mother, Lesley Angold, was a dancer in her own right. His older sisters’ names were Yioda and Melanie. His family eventually settled in the London neighborhood of Kingsbury. He went to Kingsbury High School after starting out at Roe Green. After his family settled in Radlett, he enrolled in Bushey’s Bushey Meads School, where he met and became good friends with Andrew Ridgeley. They connected through a shared dream of making a living in the music industry. He spun records in bars and universities across town.
Michael and Andrew both left high school to pursue music full-time as members of the band The Executive. The band barely lasted for a brief period of time, performing only a handful of shows before breaking up. George Kyriacos Panayiotou was an English singer, composer, and record producer better known by his stage name. He was a major pop star during the ’80s and ’90s, and his record received a Grammy in 1987. After forming the band Wham! as a teenager, Michael quickly rose to stardom and had his first worldwide success the following year. As a solo artist, he broke out with the critically acclaimed release Faith.
With over 80 million recordings sold globally, he is among the best-selling musicians of all time. His early life in and around London sparked a lifelong love of music. He and his friend Andrew Ridgeley from high school shared a passion for modern pop music. Both quit school and formed an unsuccessful band. Nonetheless, they quickly signed a record deal and began performing as Wham! He left the group Wham! after experiencing success with them individually. His first Grammy Award was shared with Aretha Franklin, although he won as a solo artist. He has run into legal trouble on a personal level a few times. He was a generous man who had given a lot to many different organizations. At age 53, he passed away in 2016 due to complications with his heart and liver.
George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley established the band Wham! in 1981. On July 9, 1983, they dropped their debut album, Fantastic, which quickly climbed to the top of the UK album charts. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia all placed it in the top spot.
Many singles from the album went on to achieve significant success in the United Kingdom, the United States, and a further 23 countries. He won the Songwriter of the Year Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors for the first time in 1985. As the first British band to tour Communist China and perform Western popular music, Whamtour !’s in April 1985 was a landmark event. The Chinese government has previously prohibited a wide variety of musical genres prior to Whamtrip !’s there. So, Whamarrival! became a global news story.
Michael was becoming increasingly well-known as the lead singer and primary songwriter for Wham! He left the band in 1986, after recording their album “Music from the Edge of Heaven,” to pursue a solo career. The duet “I Knew You Were Waiting” with American singer Aretha Franklin earned him his first Grammy Award as a solo artist in 1987. Both the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and the UK Singles Chart placed the track at the top spot.
In 1987 he also released “Faith,” his first solo album. He put on a leather jacket and some stubble for this record in an effort to distance himself from his “teen heartthrob” reputation. The album was number one on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the US Billboard 200 for a total of 12 weeks. Its singles “Faith,” “Father Figure,” and “One More Try” all peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was his second solo album, published in 1990. It was a smashing success over there, shooting straight to the top of the charts and staying there for an entire week. For 34 weeks in a row, it ranked in the top 20.
Both “Jesus to a Child” and “Fastlove,” off his 1996 album “Older,” made it into the top 10 in the United States. Despite the album’s lackluster sales, Michael was nonetheless named Best British Male Singer at both the BRIT Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards. In 1999, he released his fourth studio album, titled “Songs from the Last Century.”
This album features fresh takes on classics like “Roxanne” and “Miss Sarajevo,” as well as traditional jazz. Patience, his CD from 2004, was well received. As a long time had passed since his last album, this one was heralded as somewhat of a comeback. It was speculated that he might call it quits after the release of this album.
In 2005, a documentary titled “A Different Tale” about his life and work was released. In 2006, he released an album titled “Twenty-Five” to honor the quarter-century mark of his musical career. This album of his was his second collection. In addition to its number-one start in the UK, the album also charted in the top five in numerous other nations. Songs from his solo career and his time in Wham! were included.
He gave a series of concerts all throughout Australia in 2010. A surprise performance at the Brit Awards in London in February 2012 earned him a rapturous reception from the audience. Another documentary on his life, titled “Freedom,” was in production when he passed away; it was set to premiere in March of 2017.
