Bio

Philip David Charles Collins LVO, an English singer, guitarist, composer, record producer, and actor, was born on January 30, 1951. He has a career as a solo artist in addition to being the drummer and lead vocalist of the rock band Genesis. Collins had three UK and seven US number-one songs as a solo performer between 1982 and 1990. He had more US top 40 singles during the 1980s than any other musician when his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, and his solo career are all included. “In the Air Tonight,” “Against All Odds,” “One More Night,” and “Another Day in Paradise” are some of his most popular hits from that time period. Collins is one of the best-selling musicians in the world thanks to his eight studio albums, which have combined to sell an estimated 150 million records globally and 33.5 million certified copies in the US.

Along with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, he is one of only three musicians to have sold more than 100 million albums both as a solo performer and separately as a band’s lead singer.  In addition to winning Best British Male Artist three times at the Brit Awards, he has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.  He received six Ivor Novello Awards, including the International Achievement Award, from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.

In addition to being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, he was also admitted as a member of Genesis to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. Induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 are two other ways that music journals have recognised him. On January 30, 1951, Philip David Charles Collins was born in Putney Hospital in Wandsworth, southwest London.  His mother, Winifred June Collins, worked as a booking agent at the Barbara Speake Stage School, an independent performing arts school in East Acton, and his father, Greville Philip Austin Collins, was an insurance agent for London Assurance. Collins is the youngest of three children; his brother Clive was a well-known cartoonist, and his sister Carole was a competitive professional ice skater who followed in her mother’s career as a theatrical agent. By the time Collins was two, the family had relocated twice before settling at 453 Hanworth Road in Hounslow, Middlesex.

When he was five years old, Collins received a toy drum set for Christmas, and his two uncles subsequently fashioned him a portable, improvised set out of triangles and tambourines. These were followed as Collins got older by more comprehensive sets his parents had purchased.  He practised by imitating the music on the radio and television. A seven-year-old Collins joined a talent competition while on a family vacation at a Butlin’s, singing “The Ballad of Davy Crockett,” but she interrupted the orchestra mid-song to inform them that they were in the incorrect key. Collins was greatly influenced by the Beatles in his formative years, especially Ringo Starr, their drummer.  He also listened to The Action, a lesser-known London band, whose drummer he would imitate and whose output first exposed him to Motown and Stax Records’ soulful sounds.  Collins was further inspired by jazz and big band drummer Buddy Rich, whose viewpoint on the value of the hi-hat led him to abandon the use of two bass drums in favour of the hi-hat. Collins began taking piano lessons when he was around twelve from his father’s aunt.

He received instruction in drum rudiments from Frank King and Lloyd Ryan, and he saw this as training “Considering how often they are used, they are more useful than anything else. The foundational elements of jazz or funk drumming are always present.” [30] Collins created his own method, which he subsequently regretted since he never learned how to read or write musical notation. “I’ve always believed that everything I can hum, I can play. Such satisfied me, but that mindset is not good.” Till the age of eleven, Collins attended Nelson Primary School.

He was admitted into Chiswick County Grammar School, where he started playing football and started a school band called The Real Thing with Lavinia Lang, a friend, and Andrea Bertorelli, who would later become his wife. Later on, each of these ladies would have an effect on Collins’ personal life.  Collins’ next band was The Freehold, with whom he co-wrote his first song, “Lying, Crying, Dying,” then performed in a band called The Charge.

Collins, born and reared in west London, began playing the drums at age five. He also attended theatre school, where he received training that helped him get parts as a child actor. At the age of 13, Collins portrayed the Artful Dodger in the West End production of Oliver! After that, he followed a career in music, joining Genesis as their drummer in 1970 and taking over as lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975. Following the dissolution of his marriage and his love of soul music, Collins had a successful solo career in the 1980s, releasing the albums Face Value, Hello, I Must Be Going, No Jacket Required, and…But Seriously. Collins rose to fame as “one of the most popular pop and adult contemporary vocalists of the ’80s and beyond,” according to AllMusic. On several of his recordings, he also developed a reputation for a particular gated reverb percussion sound.

He was the only performer to appear at both Live Aid events in 1985. He also started acting again, making an appearance in Miami Vice before starring in the movie Buster. Collins departed Genesis in 1996 to concentrate on solo work, which includes penning the music for Tarzan, a Disney film released in 1999, for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Song for the song “You’ll Be in My Heart.” For their 2007 Turn It On Again Tour, he returned to Genesis. Collins published his autobiography in 2016 and finished his Not Dead Yet Tour in 2019 after a five-year hiatus to devote himself to his family. After that, in 2020, he returned to Genesis for a second tour that would finish in March 2022.
