Bio

Born on December 22, 1993, Meghan Elizabeth Trainor is an American singer-songwriter and television personality. Her breakthrough song, “All About That Bass,” which peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list and sold 11 million copies worldwide, helped her gain notoriety when she signed with Epic Records in 2014. Trainor has put out five studio albums with the company and won several awards, including the 2016 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The daughter of jewelers Kelli and Gary Trainor, Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was born on December 22, 1993, in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Her brothers are Justin, her younger brother, and Ryan, her elder brother.

At the age of six, she started singing alongside her father, an organist and music instructor, at a Methodist church. Trainor’s family supported her in pursuing her musical talents. She had also revealed to her father  her desire to work as a music artist. She started using the digital audio workstation programme GarageBand to write songs and record them.  Trainor began by rearranging the song “Heart and Soul” in her own style. Her mother claims that Trainor “did a lot by ear” and performed music without receiving official instruction. Her father encouraged her to listen to many kinds of music.

When she was 12 years old, Trainor started playing in the cover band Island Fusion with her father, aunt, and younger brother. They sang Trainor’s own songs as well as soca music.  She played piano, guitar, bongo drums, and sang with the ensemble for four years. They performed Bob Marley tributes in pubs and even served as Beenie Man’s opening act. Trainor wrote her first original song, “Give Me a Chance,” at the age of 13. Trainor independently published three albums of music she had written, recorded, performed, and produced between the ages of 15 and 17.  In the middle of 2009 and 2010, she studied in the Berklee College of Music’s Summer Performance Program. On December 25, 2009, Meghan Trainor’s first album was made available.

On April 16, 2010, Trainor released the song “Take Care of Our Soldiers,” the earnings of which went to the USO and Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops. The acoustic albums I’ll Sing with You and Only 17 were released by Trainor the next year. Al Anderson, a former member of NRBQ, was introduced to Trainor during a music convention in Nashville. Impressed by Trainor’s composition, he recommended her to Carla Wallace, his publisher at Nashville-based Big Yellow Dog Music.

Despite receiving a full scholarship offer to the Berklee College of Music, Trainor chose to focus on her songwriting career and signed with Big Yellow Dog Music in 2012. She started out as a songwriter-for-hire because of her versatility in songwriting, publishing songs for other singers since she wasn’t sure she wanted to be a recording artist herself. She believed she was one of the obese kids who would never be an artist, according to her father.  2012 saw Trainor complete his studies at Nauset Regional High School.  On April 24, 2012, she made available for digital download the song “Who I Wanna Be.” Trainor visited Nashville, New York City, and Los Angeles during 2013, where she composed and assisted in the production of pop and country songs. On demos for other musicians, she performed lead and background vocals, and sometimes her voice was heard on the finished recordings.

Aya Katrine of Denmark released the song “In the Sun” as a single in May 2013, which Trainor co-wrote. Through Wallace and a common acquaintance, Trainor and producer Kevin Kadish were introduced in Nashville in June 2013. Kadish and Trainor started recording together that month because they both like retro-style music.  Later, Trainor was impatient with having to travel from Nantucket to Los Angeles for songwriting sessions. In November 2013, Trainor chose to move to Nashville since her parents did not want her to because it would be pricey.  There, she contributed songs to artists including Hunter Hayes, Rascal Flatts, R5, and Sabrina Carpenter, among others.

When Trainor was a student in the eighth grade, her family moved from Nantucket to North Eastham after briefly residing in Orleans, Massachusetts. She studied guitar, played trumpet for three years, sang in a jazz band, and substitute cheered while attending Nauset Regional High School. When Trainor was a teenager, her parents encouraged her to go to songwriting conferences that took her to locations where production firms were looking for fresh musicians and composers.  At age 15, she began taking guitar lessons from Johnny Spampinato, a former NRBQ member.  Trainor produced and recorded her songs using Logic Studio at the time, and she eventually worked independently in a studio her parents constructed in their house.

Young Trainor had a passion for music, and she composed, recorded, and oversaw the production of three independently released acoustic albums: Meghan Trainor, I’ll Sing with You, and Only 17. In 2013, she started creating music for other musicians. The top-10 singles “Lips Are Movin” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” were included on Trainor’s major-label debut studio album, Title, which was released in 2015 and debuted at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200.

Her follow-up album, the R&B album Thank You, was lead by the song “No,” and both albums peaked at number three on their respective lists. Treat Myself, Trainor’s third album with Epic, is inspired by electronic dance music and was produced in an effort to keep up with current musical trends. Later that year, she released the holiday album A Very Trainor Christmas as a follow-up. The song “Made You Look” from Trainor’s fifth studio album, Takin’ It Back, peaked at number five in various nations, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Takin’ It Back was released on October 21, 2022.

Themes of women, body image, and personal strength are regularly present in Trainor’s lyrics, despite occasional accusations that they are antifeminist or backward-looking. Her music incorporates pop, R&B, doo-wop, and blue-eyed soul and is inspired by the popular music of the 1950s. She has voiced characters in two animated movies, Playmobil: The Movie and Smurfs: The Lost Village, outside of the music business. The Four: Battle for Stardom (2018), The Voice UK, and Australian Idol all included her as a judge. A Grammy Award, four ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and two Billboard Music Awards are among Trainor’s honours.
