Troy Pharoahe Monch is the stage name of American rapper Donald Jamerson, who was born on October 31, 1967. He is originally from South Jamaica, which is located in the borough of Queens in New York City. He is well-known for his elaborate delivery, intricate rhyme systems, and internal as well as multisyllabic rhyme schemes in his lyrics. In his role as one half of the rap duo Organized Konfusion alongside partner Prince Poetry, Monch is responsible for the publication of three albums: the self-titled Organized Konfusion, Stress: The Extinction Agenda, and The Equinox. The two musicians were responsible for a significant portion of the production work on these albums. Each album was met with mostly favorable reviews from the critics, however, sales were average.
After finishing their work on their final album, The Equinox, in 1997, the duo decided to go their own ways. After further consideration, Prince Poetry has decided that there will not be a reunion of Organized Konfusion. Pharoahe Monch gave permission to the hip hop website HipHopDX.com on July 9, 2009, for a song to be prematurely released from his upcoming album W.A.R. . The title of the song was “Shine,” and it included vocals by Mela Machinko. Diamond D was also responsible for producing the tune. Another song by Monch, titled “Clap,” which was created by M-Phases, was discovered online on February 14, 2010, after it had been stolen.
Pharoahe Monch has received a lot of praise for the intricate rapping technique that he uses. According to AllMusic, he “crafts complicated and cerebral raps” and has “a reputation as one of underground hip hop’s preeminent lyricists.” According to Kool Moe Dee’s book, There’s a God on the Mic, Pharoahe Monch is ranked number 26 on Kool Moe Dee’s list of the best MCs of all time, with the following description of him included: “Pharoahe Monch is like an eloquent linguistics professor moonlighting as a rhyme serial killer terrorist, challenging the listeners’ I.Q. while daring.
Monch, who was diagnosed with chronic asthma at the age of thirteen months and has struggled with the condition ever since came up with original and inventive ways to deliver his lines when he was rapping. Asthma, he explained in an interview with HipHopDX, “motivated [him] to really go against the issue and push the edge in terms of breath control.” As a result, he developed a method that he “wouldn’t try if [he] didn’t have asthma.” Monch likens the process of writing and recording his lyrics to the process of writing and filming a movie.
In the book How to Rap, Monch says that he will “punch in” vocals so that he can “retake some things, just like a film.” He also says that he “rewrites” lyrics, saying that he will “go back as a screenwriter and rewrite scenes and leave more to the imagination.”It is said that he created the choruses for his biggest song, “Simon Says,” before he penned the verses, and O.C., a fellow rapper and collaborator, says that Monch will write single words down and then use them five years later. Jazz music and the performances of jazz performers like John Coltrane had a significant influence on his vocal style.
In March of 2011, Pharoahe Monch released his third self-titled solo album under the title W.A.R. . Jill Scott, Styles P, Citizen Cope, Jean Grae, and Royce da 5’9 were among the artists who made special cameos on the album “, Immortal Technique, Vernon Reid, Phonte, Mr. Porter, Mela Machinko, Showtyme & DJ Boogie Blind. Pharoahe Monch has stated that the album is a “throwback to 1993 and 1994 hip-hop” and that it has production from Exile, Marco Polo, M-Phases, Fatin, Diamond D, Mike Loe, Samiyam, Adam Deitch, Eric Krasno, and Pharoahe Monch himself. “Shine,” “Clap,” “Black Hand Side,” and “Assassins” are the four singles that have been taken from the album and released. A re-issue of Internal Affairs celebrating the album’s ten-year anniversary will also be published, and it will include a documentary detailing the album’s production. Alongside Royce da 5’9, Pharoahe Monch served as a judge on the television show Ultimate MC in the year 2011 “in addition to Planet Asia, Sean Price, and Organik.
Pharoahe Monch recently made his second appearance on an R&B song. His first appearance was on “It Ain’t The Money,” which was featured on Macy Gray’s album The Trouble With Being Myself in 2003. Most recently, Pharoahe Monch performed on “The Cycle,” an album track from Eric Roberson’s album The Box, released on 2014On April 15, 2014, Pharoahe released his fourth album under his independent label, PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. W.A.R. Media was responsible for the album’s release. The album is a conceptual continuation of his third studio effort, titled W.A.R. . Both of the album’s tracks, “Damage” and “Bad M.F.,” were produced by Lee Stone and were released as singles.
Pharoahe Monch was a guest vocalist on Keyon Harrold’s song “Her Beauty Through My Eyes,” which was released as a single in late 2017, taken from Harrold’s most recent studio album, named Magician.th1rt3en is a rap-rock supergroup that was created in 2019 by Pharoahe. The band also features guitarist Marcus Machado and drummer Daru Jones, and they released their debut single “Palindrome” in September of the same year. On the day that marked the 20th anniversary of its premiere, Internal Affairs was finally made available on streaming services on October 19, 2019.
A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism, Th1rt3en’s debut album, was released two years later on January 22, 2021. The album was backed by three singles: “Fight,” which featured the rap group Cypress Hill, “666,” and “Cult 45.”After that, Pharoahe Monch became a member of the independent record company Rawkus Records. In 1999, Monch released his much-anticipated debut album, Internal Affairs. Prior to that, he had appeared as a guest on a number of albums, including the Rawkus compilation Soundbombing II, which was a commercial success. The album’s initial song, “Simon Says,” was a successful single that reached its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 97. Despite the song’s popularity, Monch was later sued for the unauthorized use of a sample from Akira Ifukube’s Gojira Tai Mosura, which was the theme song for the film Godzilla vs. Mothra and was released in 1992. This led to a dispute surrounding the song. Because of this, the circulation of his CD came to an abrupt halt.
Pharoahe would not release another solo project for several years after the incident, although he would continue to release tracks and have guest appearances in the meantime. He worked with Mos Def and Nate Dogg on the smash song “Oh No,” which was included on the Rawkus compilation record Lyricist Lounge 2 and released in the year 2000. In 2001, he contributed the song “Fuck You” to the soundtrack for the movie Training Day, and in 2002, he rapped the theme song for the video game Madden NFL. Additionally, he contributed vocals to the song “Last Dayz,” which was included on Adam F’s album Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare, which was released in 2001. Remixes of the song were included on the album Drum & Bass Warfare, which was released the following year. 2003 marked the release of “Agent Orange,” Pharoahe’s final single through Rawkus Records. The song, which was inspired by war and featured a reworking of the 1991 Organized Konfusion track “Releasing Hypnotical Gases,” was titled “Agent Orange.”
There were reports that his upcoming album, which had a working title of Innervisions at first but was later changed, would be released on Denaun Porter’s new Shady Records subsidiary Runyon Avenue. They attempted to get in contact with Stevie Wonder and had already started the recording process for the album but the deal appears to have fallen through; later, Monch announced that he had signed a contract with Street Records Corporation, which is home to the Wu-Tang Clan, David Banner, and Terror Squad. The Awakening was the first and only official mixtape that Pharoahe Monch ever released, and it was released on December 19, 2006, presented by Clinton Sparks and DJ Boogie Brown. Monch’s second solo album, titled Desire, was released in June 2007 and received positive reviews.
Monch has been quoted as saying the following about the album: “…it’s extremely soulful, very gospel, and it’s a fresh, new sound for me.” The song “Push,” which the artist created on their own, served as the album’s main single, with “Let’s Go” serving as the B-side. Late in the month of September 2006, both the music video and the single for the song were made available. In February of 2007, Pharoahe Monch debuted his second music video, titled “When the Gun Draws,” during a music festival in Brooklyn. His collaboration with Prince Po on a tune titled “Stray Bullet,” which was included on the album Stress: The Extinction Agenda, served as the impetus for the creation of this composition. Late in 2007, the title tune “Desire” received its definitive music video treatment. Andy Morton, a filmmaker from New Zealand, oversaw the production while it was shot on location during the Rock the Bells tour with the whole band. Showtyme and Mela Machinko are both featured in the music video.
