American reality television programme Pawn Stars, created by Leftfield Pictures, airs on History. The World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, a 24-hour family business founded in 1989 and initially run by patriarch Richard “Old Man” Harrison, his son Rick Harrison, Rick’s son Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison, and Corey’s childhood friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell, is the setting for the television series, which is filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada. The series aired on July 26, 2009, and went on to become the network’s most rated program and the No. 2 reality programme after Jersey Shore. During a weekend trip to Las Vegas in 2008, Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines of Leftfield Pictures were astounded by the variety of unique and rather shady pawn shops.
This is how Pawn Stars got its start. They looked for a family-run business to serve as the focus of a TV series since they thought such places may include interesting personalities. Eventually, they identified the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip. The manager and part-owner, Rick Harrison, had attempted unsuccessfully for four years to pitch a programme based on his business. It had been the subject of a 2001 PBS documentary. Insomniac with Dave Attell’s 2003 Las Vegas episode has previously highlighted both the store and Rick.
The renowned Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, Nevada, serves as the venue for the series’ on-location shooting. The majority of the clients featured in episodes bring in a range of vintage or antique things to the company, which has 12,000 items in its inventory as of July 2011, despite the fact that jewellery is the most often pawned item at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop. About five to six of these objects are featured in each episode in parts where a member of the crew, either Rick Harrison, his son Corey, or Richard Harrison, tells the narrative of the item’s past. When a buyer is unable to assess an item, they seek the advice of a professional who can do so in order to ascertain the object’s authenticity, prospective worth, and, in the case of damaged objects, the cost of repair or putting the item up for sale.
If an expert opinion is provided, it is discussed with the client along with the object’s potential worth. This discussion is sometimes mixed with an interview in which the expert explains his reasoning to the audience. As the two parties haggle over the item’s price, a price tag image in the lower-right corner of the screen displays the constantly changing dollar figure. On occasion, Rick may invest in objects that need restoration before calculating the price, assuming the risk of such charges. The popularity of Pawn Stars has benefited the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, which has grown in line with its status as a popular Las Vegas tourist destination and imitators and clones including the truTV series Hardcore Pawn and History’s own Cajun Pawn Stars.
The business had between 70 and 100 clients on average each day at first, but by October 2010, there were more than 1,000. The store experienced its ninth expansion since it first began, adding roughly 30 additional staff and expanding its showroom by two thirds to 15,000 square feet at a cost of $400,000 to manage the influx of customers. Additionally, Rick Harrison claimed that he was constructing a gym above the Pawn Shop for the convenience of the workers in the fourth season episode “Over the Top.” The store now now offers goods under its own brand, saving the Harrisons the expense of engaging professional designers. These products’ designs come from contests consumers participate on Facebook. In addition to ensuring crowds during local nightclub appearances, for which Corey Harrison and Chumlee Russell are paid $1,000 each night, the team is active on Facebook and Twitter.
Due to rules requiring the confidentiality of customers who pawn products and the tourists and fans taking photographs and videos in the showroom, the four major cast members are only permitted to operate the main counter during shoot days as a consequence of the location’s use for shooting. The business is temporarily closed to the general public while episodes of the series are being filmed, and only a select group of carefully screened clients are permitted in the showroom.Harrison committed to a record-breaking 80-episode renewal deal for the show’s last four seasons in July 2011.
Episode storylines also include of interpersonal tales concentrating on the interactions and tensions between Rick, Corey, the Old Man, and Corey’s boyhood buddy Austin “Chumlee” Russell, who works at the store. These frequently include disputes about how the store should be operated, the older Harrisons challenging Corey’s judgement, and Chumlee’s IQ and ability being questioned. A multiple-choice trivia question about the store and its inventory, the cast, or one of the featured items is shown prior to the second commercial break, with the solution revealed after the break. Starting with the Season 8 episode “A Very Vegas Christmas,” a trivia question is posed during each commercial break. The show was initially presented to HBO, but the network would have liked it to take place in a Taxicab Confessions-style series at the Gold & Silver’s night window.
The formula later changed into the show’s now-familiar family-focused theme. The series was picked up by History president Nancy Dubuc, who was tasked with developing material with a broader appeal to counterbalance the network’s in-depth military programming. It was originally titled Pawning History before a Leftfield employee suggested that Pawn Stars would work better with the setting. The network agreed, thinking the name to be more aesthetically beautiful and simple to remember. The name is a deliberate parody of porn stars. Although she did not dissuade the on-camera experts evaluating the products brought into the Gold & Silver, the staff member changed the plot to align it with the network’s brand. She also included the on-camera experts evaluating the items.
With narration given by either the Harrisons or Chumlee, the series shows the staff’s interactions with clients who bring in a variety of objects to sell or pawn. Customers are shown bargaining over the price and discussing the artifact’s historical context. The show also explores the character actors’ interpersonal difficulties. In response to these disputes, one critic called the programme “hijacked by the Teutul family from American Chopper” and compared it to the Antiques Roadshow. Similar praise comes from TV Guide, which describes the programme as “one part Antiques Roadshow, a sprinkling of LA Ink, and a dash of COPS.”
Additionally, a number of regional authorities in various disciplines, including two who have started their own spin-off shows, often show up to evaluate the objects being sold or pawned. American Restoration, the first spin-off of the series, debuted in October 2010 and stars metal artist and antique restorer Rick Dale. Danny “The Count” Koker, a mechanic and vehicle restoration specialist, is the hero of the second spin-off, Counting Cars, which premiered on August 13, 2012. The 16th season of the programme debuted on January 21, 2019, with an hour-long format. With subtitles in 38 different languages and broadcast in 150 different countries, the series has gone worldwide.
