Paul Oakenfold Bio

Born in London, England on August 30, 1963. Paul Oakenfold, the legendary DJ, producer, remixer, and record magnate, did more than anybody else to introduce house music to the United Kingdom. Oakenfold, a pioneer in the house/trance scene, has performed at some of the world’s most important nightclubs and festivals, earning him the reputation as the genre’s undisputed champion.

Oakenfold has remixed songs for everyone from the Rolling Stones to Snoop Doggy Dog, and he’s gone on the road with major pop acts like U2 and Björk. Oakenfold was recognized as the most influential and wealthy DJ in the world in the 1999 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. Thanks to Oakenfold’s foresight, an American musical style is now among Britain’s most popular. According to reports, turntables have been selling better than guitars among budding musicians under 30. “When I was growing up, it was about picking up a guitar and being in a rock band,” Oakenfold told Richard Harrington of the Washington Post.

Oakenfold, who was born on August 30, 1963, in London, England, began his career as a DJ after experiencing difficulties as a musician. “I was not a good guitarist,” he said. I’ve always had the itch to be a musician. Turntables were my only option for listening to it. I had previously seen a documentary about Grandmaster Flash and felt his work was fantastic. It was totally fresh and riveting. And rock ‘n’ roll was a tad dull at the moment in England.

Oakenfold began DJing at the tender age of 16 when he teamed up with his pal Trevor Fung to spin soul and groove records at a Covent Garden dive pub in exchange for kitchen help. Oakenfold, who lacked influential models in England, relocated to New York City in 1983, the epicenter of the dance music industry, and began working as a courier to support himself. While in America, he got a crash course in the nightlife and absorbed inspiration from multi-genre DJ and major influence Larry Levan.

In an interview with Dave “The Wave” Dresden for DJ Times, Oakenfold recalled his time in New York and how he used to frequent the Garage but he still couldn’t understand how people there could party all night. They were on medicines for a good six or seven weeks before I figured it out. Levan was the DJ there, and he was always quite kind to my friend and me when we arrived at six or seven in the morning, nearly collapsed from drinking too much coffee to keep awake. He also had a wide variety of dance and disco music, in addition to the Clash and Queen. Where I came from, I learned to be more accepting of other styles of music. So if I could name one DJ as an inspiration, it would be him. Certainly not an English radio DJ.

Oakenfold promoted concerts in the United Kingdom, booking performers like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. After some time in New York, his DJing abilities were so far ahead of the curve that he was hired to spin at the Project, one of the earliest dance music venues in England, in 1985 and 1986.

Oakenfold found the sound that would come to define him in 1987 on the Spanish island resort of Ibiza, where he was vacationing with friends Fung and Ian St. Paul. The Balearic sound is a bright, cheerful mix of house, soul, rock, and Italian disco, and he and the other DJs were introduced to it one night at a club named Amnesia. Like in New York, the music would start at four in the morning, and the young crowd, fueled by the newly popular drug Ecstasy, would stay until lunchtime. “It was the island’s spirit, its energy,” Oakenfold explained to Harrington. All we wanted to do was bring it back to England with us. We weren’t plotting anything; we just wanted to bring something back with us.

Shoom, Trip, and, in Oakenfold’s case, Future at the Sound Shaft and later Spectrum and the Land of Oz at Heaven were some of the most well-known after-hours dance venues in the United Kingdom where the Balearic style was first played by British DJs in 1988 and 1989. Oakenfold launched the London megaclub Ministry of Sound and was a resident DJ at another major Liverpool club, Cream, in the early 1990s, when the British club scene was at its peak.

As word of Oakenfold’s mixing and producing skills spread, he was soon in high demand from record labels. The list goes on and on Snoop Doggy Dogg, New Order, the Cure, Massive Attack, M People, Arrested Development, the Shamen, the Stone Roses, the Rolling Stones, and U2 to name a few. Later in the decade, he worked as a producer on albums by the Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and once again by U2. While touring with the Irish group in 1993, Oakenfold made history by becoming the first DJ to play at a stadium. Later, he made history by performing as the first DJ ever to headline Britain’s legendary Glastonbury Festival. Oakenfold’s presence has ensured the inclusion of dance music at the vast majority of the world’s largest rock festivals.

Oakenfold’s efforts helped push house music into the mainstream in the UK as well. His Journey by DJ series of mix albums did well, and his 1997 CD Tranceport was a landmark release in the trance genre, which helped push House into a more commercially-friendly, melodic sound. When Oakenfold hung up his turntables in 1999, Virgin Records released Resident: Two Years of Oakenfold at Cream to celebrate his tenure as a DJ at the club.

DJ Paul Oakenfold returned in 2000 with a double CD titled Perfecto Presents Another World for his new label, London/Sire. Dead Can Dance film scores are combined with techno, classical, spoken word, and even a surprising remake of the Led Zeppelin classic “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You.” The band Led Zeppelin has never before authorized a remix of one of their songs until this one.
