Paul Kelly was born on 13 January 1955. The singer he may be, but Paul Kelly writes music that is nothing short of poetry. Stunning tracks like “To Her Door,” “Before Too Long,” and “Tease Me” are nothing short of musical poetry.
Kelly, ever the astute observer, has published a book of his song lyrics titled “Don’t Start Me Talking.” Talent runs in the Kelly family tree too. Paul Kelly’s daughter Memphis Kelly co-starred in “One Night the Moon” and also performs in a band called Wishful with her identical twin sister Madeleine. Dan Kelly, Paul’s nephew, is also a successful musician in Australia, having appeared on Paul’s most recent record as a guest guitarist and having released an album of his own material.
Paul Kelly, a singer-songwriter with the melodic vitality and versatility of Elvis Costello, encapsulates Australia in his songs in the same way that Bruce Springsteen and the Kinks’ Ray Davies have encapsulated their home country. Kelly sprang to prominence with the semi-acoustic folk sound of 1985’s Post, but it was 1987’s Gossip—built on his savvy, full-bodied pop melodies and intelligent but unpretentious storytelling—that truly catapulted him to fame.
Kelly’s music got edgier and more tuneful on 1994’s Desired Man, which focused on more introspective themes. While 1999’s Smoke featured prominent folk and country influences, the following year’s Professor Ratbaggy was a full-on dive into modern sounds, complete with daring production and electronically manipulated music.
Kelly was born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1955, the sixth of nine children. After finishing high school, he decided to take a year off and travel around Australia while working odd jobs, composing poems, and considering a future in short story writing. He was far into his 20s before he started playing guitar seriously. Due to the band’s vast size and the presence of three composers, Kelly eventually left to establish his own band, Paul Kelly & the Dots.
Kelly was quickly recognized as the best songwriter in his class. Melbourne musicians would frequent his shows on their off nights. At Mushroom Records, he also had a devoted follower. One of the public relations specialists of Mushroom Records hid in a room and refused to come out until Paul Kelly & the Dots were signed. Kelly’s perfectionism led to two albums of roots rock, Talk and Manila, with which he was never entirely satisfied.
Kelly disbanded the Dots and relocated to Sydney in 1984, where he worked on his seminal solo album, Post. Post, recorded in two weeks on a shoestring budget without a record contract and with little knowledge of how the album would be released, captures the essence of Paul Kelly in a loosely structured song cycle that references locations in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney in much the same way that Springsteen references locations in New Jersey.
Gossip, a double album with 14 songs written by Kelly and released in September 1986, spans four sides. The legendary Australian rock album was recorded in a month and went gold thanks to the success of its singles “Honey It Hurts” and “Before Too Long.” There were three covers of Post songs on the CD. A&M issued a single album version of Gossip in July 1987, introducing Kelly to American audiences. The album featured 15 songs. Beneath the Sun is the group’s second studio album in Australia, and it features 14 brand new songs written by Kelly.
With the release of So Much Water, So Close to Home in July 1989, the band rebranded itself as Paul Kelly & the Messengers to avoid any confusion. Scott Litt produced the new album, and the songs reflect American culture and sensibilities. Kelly disbanded the Messengers with a farewell tour after a last album, Humor, and declared that they had accomplished all they could.
With 1994’s Desired Man, his second studio solo album, he explored a wide variety of musical styles and genres. Songs from the South, his greatest hits collection released in 1997, went double platinum. He released Smoke, a bluegrass album with Uncle Bill, and Professor Ratbaggy, an album heavily influenced by technology, simultaneously in 1999.
In the twenty-first century, Kelly put out a slew of albums, including 2001’s Nothing But a Dream, 2004’s two-disc Ways & Means, 2005’s bluegrass-influenced Foggy Highway, and 2006’s Stardust Five, an album with a surf sound. He returned to form in 2007 with Stolen Apples, and a live album from the subsequent Stolen Apples tour was issued in 2008. On the occasion of his 30th anniversary as a live performer, Australian radio station Triple J paid tribute to Kelly with a unique live event including a wide range of artists performing his songs.
Before Too Long: Triple J’s Tribute to Paul Kelly is the CD release of the show that was originally broadcast. In the same year that his biography How to Make Gravy was published, the documentary Paul Kelly: Tales of Me was released, detailing Kelly’s life and career. Kelly’s 2012 album Spring and Fall was a concept record exploring the beginning and conclusion of a romantic relationship.
