Ben Lee was born on 11 September 1978. In 1993, Ben Lee made his live debut as the lead singer of the Sydney schoolmates’ noise rock band Noise Addict. In that same year, with a group average age of 14, the band was signed to “Fellaheen Records.” Thurston Moore, of Sonic Youth, also put them on his “Ecstatic Peace” label. Eventually, in 1994, Beastie Boys member Mike D signed “Noise Addict” to the fledgling label Grand Royal Records. In March of 1995, when Ben was only 16 years old, he published his first solo effort, titled “Grandpaw Would.”
After that, in 1997, he released Something to Remember Me By, and in 1999, he released Breathing Tornados. Ben worked with Harmony Korine and Petra Haden on “Breathing Tornados.” Ben’s first film role was opposite Rose Byrne in 2003’s The Rage in Placid Lake, which Tony McNamara directed.
Ben Lee, one of the youngest singer/songwriters to make an impact on Australia’s music landscape, has won four ARIA awards and garnered a lot of attention in a country where bands tend to dominate the music market. Lee first gained prominence as a teenager while performing with the successful Sydney alternative rock band Noise Addict. He has since released many critically acclaimed solo albums after the band broke up in the mid-’90s, including the double-platinum-selling Awake Is the New Sleep in 2005, Rebirth of Venus in 2009, Love Is the Great Revolt in 2015, and I’m Fun! in 2022.
Noise Addict played their first gig in 1993 at a library book sale after convincing Fellaheen Records executive Steve Pavlovic to check out their four-track demo recorded in Lee’s bedroom. After signing to a record label, the band quickly gained notoriety thanks to Pavlovic’s extensive network, which resulted in high-profile support tours and endorsements from notable figures. The leader of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore, quickly became a fan of Noise Addict and released their demo tape on his own Ecstatic Peace label. Each member of Noise Addict joined the band when they were 14 years old.
The band’s first single, “I Wish I Was Him,” was a parody of Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando that ultimately led to Dando recording a rendition of the song himself. After gaining a fan with Beastie Boys’ Mike Diamond, Noise Addict started releasing music on Grand Royal, the group’s record company. The label collaboration resulted in the release of the Young and Jaded EP, with six acoustic tracks again recorded in Lee’s bedroom, but the band was unable to do much touring due to their academic obligations.
Yet, Lee persisted in his musical pursuits, splitting time between Sydney and Chicago to make his debut solo album, Grandpaw Would. When he was 16 years old, he went on tour with a backup band from the United States. After finishing high school, the members of Noise Addict recorded an album and prepared to tour the United States. Soon after, the band disbanded, and Lee, then only 18 years old, picked up an acoustic guitar once more to record his solo debut, Something to Remember Me By.
Within a short time, Lee was in the uncommon position of having greater success selling records in the United States than in his native country. Things began to change with the publication of Breathing Tornadoes in 1998, which he wrote and produced in his Los Angeles residence using primarily generated sounds. Lee reaped the rewards of his newfound fame, which included a relationship with actress Claire Danes, after his single “Cigarettes Would Kill You” became a widespread smash in Australia.
Excuse me. Lee’s pop/rock songwriting and Dan the Automator’s rhythmic production came together on the 2002 Modular CD Yeah You. Lee departed Modular and signed with New West in the United States two years later, while also launching his own label in Australia called Ten Fingers. Awake Is the New Sleep was released in 2005 by both of them. The album’s success in Australia was helped along by the track “Catch My Illness,” which is certified double platinum. After the record was finished, Lee didn’t waste any time getting started on his next project, which took three years to complete.
While 2009’s Rebirth of Venus paid aural respect to the Roman goddess of love, 2007’s Ripe commemorated the songwriter’s 15th anniversary in the music business with another collection of upbeat pop tunes. In the meantime, Lee got married to Donovan’s daughter Ione Skye and started a family with her; they welcomed a daughter in late 2009. Lee’s new label, Dangerbird, published his eighth solo album, Deeper Into Dream, in October 2011. After two years, in 2008, he released his first album for Warner Bros., the pop-influenced Love Is the Great Rebellion. 2016 saw the release of his eleventh studio album, Freedom, Love & The Recuperation of the Human Mind.
In 2017, He released a children’s CD titled Ben Lee Sings Songs About Islam for the Entire Family, as well as a duets album with How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor titled Radnor & Lee. Lee and Tom Robbins collaborated on an album release in 2018 based on Robbins’ 2009 book B Is for Beer. For the 2019 release of Quarter Century Classix by New West, Lee provided cover versions of numerous indie rock classics from the ’90s. The first song, “Born for This Bullshit,” from Lee’s 14th solo studio album, I’m Fun!, was released in 2021. This album, which was out in 2022, had appearances by Zooey Deschanel, Christian Lee Hutson, Money Mark, Megan Washington, Georgia Maq, and Eric D. Johnson.
