Paige Renee Spiranac is an American social media celebrity, golf coach, and former professional golfer. She was born on March 26, 1993, and her birth name is pronounced spi-RANAK (/speak/). Both at the University of Arizona and at San Diego State University, she competed in the highest level of college golf, earning All-Mountain West Conference honors in the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons, and guiding the Aztecs to their first Mountain West Conference Championship in 2015. She graduated from San Diego State University in 2015.
Spiranac was born in Wheat Ridge, Colorado to parents of Croatian ancestry and siblings also of Croatian ancestry. Her dad, Dan, played football for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, who went on to win the national college championship in 1976. Her mother Annette danced in ballet productions professionally. Her older sister Lexie, who competed for Stanford’s track team and also earned a collegiate athletic scholarship, was a member of the team.
Spiranac spent her childhood in Monument, Colorado, where she participated in gymnastics competitions in the vain ambition of one day making it to the Olympics When she was 12 years old, her hopes of becoming a gymnast were dashed when she shattered her kneecap twice. This inspired her to pursue a career in golf instead. In order for Spiranac to have enough time to train, she chose to home-school herself and divide her time between the cities of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Monument, Colorado.
Spiranac began her career in golf by winning five tournaments on Colorado’s junior golf circuit. One of these victories was the 2010 CWGA Junior Stroke Play. She went on to become a top-20 junior player in the world, a top-5 college recruit, a two-time West Region Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American while competing on the Future Collegians World Tour. Because of this, the University of Arizona granted her a scholarship to play golf there.
Within her first year as a member of the University of Arizona Wildcats golf team in 2011–2012, Spiranac took part in three tournaments: the Wildcat Invitational, the Windy City Intercollegiate, and the Pac-12/SEC Challenge. These competitions took place within the course of the Wildcats’ golf season. The Windy City Intercollegiate was where she shot her best score of the year, a 73, which she did twice.
Spiranac started her sophomore year at San Diego State after making the move there. She said that winning the Mountain West Conference Championship during the Aztecs’ senior season was “one of the absolute happiest moments of my life.” The Mountain West Conference Championship was the first time in the school’s history that the Aztecs won the title.
Raccoon Creek Golf Course was the location of the 100th Colorado Women’s Golf Association Match Play Championship in July of 2015. The event was hosted by the Colorado Golf Association. Spiranac prevailed in a championship match over Brittany Fan of the University of Colorado Boulder by finishing nine strokes under par. The match lasted 35 holes. In May 2016, Spiranac made his professional debut on the developing Cactus Tour at the Las Colinas Club located in Queen Creek, Arizona. Spiranac got her only tour win in her third appearance, which took place at Scottsdale’s Orange Tree Country Club.
She defeated Hannah O’Sullivan, who was the top-ranked amateur in the world at the time, in a sudden-death playoff. Another top-five finish at Trilogy in October[ and $800 were both the results of a final round that was two under par. She finished the year with a total winning amount of $8,010.Spiranac entered her first LPGA Qualifying Tournament in August 2016, but she was not successful in obtaining a card that would let her compete on the professional circuit. This resulted in quick backlash, as was exemplified by the title that appeared on Fox Sports: “LPGA slammed for’slut-shaming’ its own players after new dress code restrictions were revealed.” A few days after the LPGA made their announcement, Spiranac gave their response in an opinion piece for Fortune magazine. During the month of February in the year 2020, Spiranac launched a podcast that was given the title Playing-A-Round with Paige Renee.
