Oscar Emilio León Samoza, 11 July 1943, Antímano, Caracas, Venezuela. D’León, a charismatic singer and bass player also known as “El Leon de la Salsa” (The Lion of Salsa), is one of the few contemporary salsa musicians who capitalises on the strengths of Cuban big band arrangers from the 1940s and 1950s while still maintaining a distinctly modern flavour. D’León is known as “El Leon de la Salsa” (The Lion of Salsa).
He has accumulated an impressive body of work, coming from a country that is not typically associated with producing a world-class Latin artist. He uses Cuban classics and compositions by other prominent Latin composers as a vehicle for imaginative reinterpretations, and he does this using other prominent Latin composers’ compositions.
D’León possesses a voice that is exceptionally beautiful, has a wide range, is very silky and playful, and is emotionally impressive all at the same time. The interplay between the harmonised lead vocals and nasal background singing (which is traditional to the Afro-Cuban form called son) perfectly complements and mirrors the brass arrangements, giving the music a rich and dynamic texture.
D’León’s band is primarily a salsa orquesta, with the standard rhythm section consisting of percussion, bass, and piano, as well as varying numbers of brass instruments, particularly trombones. Trombones are the primary focus of the band’s brass section. D’León is a showman on stage who is exuberant and tongue-in-cheek. He has an outstanding ability to involve the audience in his extended improvisations on his many hits and classics of Latin music.
Although he is known primarily as a bass player, during his “live” performances, he focuses solely on singing and high-energy dancing, which inevitably involves the audience. This is in contrast to his reputation as a bass player. Between the years 1972 and 1976, D’León participated in the recording of six albums with Venezuela’s most successful salsa band, Dimensión Latina. D’León was a founding member of the band.
In 1976, D’León left Federico y Su Combo Latino and formed his own band, La Salsa Mayor, which featured the distinguished piano playing of Enrique “Culebra” Iriarte, who had previously been a member of Federico y Su Combo Latino. The band had two trumpets and two trombones. After releasing three albums with La Salsa Mayor up until their breakup in 1978, he only kept Iriarte and César Pinto, his principal trumpeter (another ex-Federico accompanist), on board for Y Su Salsa Mayor Con Wladimir.
The rest of the band was comprised of substantially new musicians. Wladimir Lozano, who had previously served as a co-lead vocalist for Dimensión Latina, was brought back together to record this album. From this point forward, Victor Mendoza and Humberto “Tigre” Becerra, along with D’León, were responsible for the crucially important typically Cuban nasal style of background vocals. This style has remained one of D’León’s trademarks to this day.
The remaining members carried on performing under the name Salsa Mayor and issued the album… De Frente Y Luchando…! La Salsa Mayor ‘Nuestra Orquesta’ (1978), with Pellín Rodríguez (ex-El Gran Combo) sharing lead vocals, and La Salsa Mayor (1979). 1978 marked the beginning of D’León’s collaboration with the band La Critica, which at the time featured Teo Hernández. Hernández was the former lead singer of the exciting and funky all-trombone band Los Dementes, which was fronted by the pianist, arranger, and composer Ray Pérez.
D’León’s collaboration with La Critica began in 1978. D’León provided the vocals for the hit song “Se Necesita Rumbero,” which was included on the album that La Critica released in that year. Oscar D’León and His Salsa Mayor Con Wladimir was released in 1978 and featured a band with a frontline consisting of three trumpets and two trombones. D’León continued to use this combination on his subsequent three albums.
After the release of El Mas Grande! in 1979, his band was simply referred to as his orchestra from that point forward. After the release of Al Frente De Todos in 1980, Culebra left the band to pursue an unremarkable solo career. Enrico Enriquez was brought in to take Culebra’s place on the album A M S Me Gusta As! (1981) This album was recorded in Puerto Rico and featured a substantial brass section, in addition to the unusual inclusion of saxophone.
After releasing a string of forgettable albums in the early 1980s, D’León started making a comeback with the release of 1984’s Con Cario. Between the years 1985 and 1987, D’León released a string of albums that showcased some of his finest compositions, inspired playing, and confident arrangements, which justified his position as one of salsa’s true international stars. Riquiti..! and La Salsa Soy Yo, both released in 1987, are widely considered to be the best albums to come out of this era.
In June and October of 1988, D’León played three concerts at London’s Hackney Empire, all of which were completely sold out. These concerts demonstrated D’León’s reputation as a live performer. The most recent one was captured on film and aired on BBC television in 1989 as part of the Rhythms of the World world music series. It was later published as Oscar D’León Live and was the first salsa video to be distributed in the United Kingdom.
After 1988, there was a lull in the recording industry, and most of the music that was released during this time was salsa romántica. In 1991, D’León participated in Tito Puente’s The Mambo King: 100th LP as a member of an all-star line-up of his new label RMM’s top vocalists. Other members of the line-up included José Alberto, Tony Vega, and Ismael Miranda, as well as Celia Cruz. He continued to record for the RMM subsidiary Sonero, eventually putting out the albums El Rey De Los Soneros (1992) and Toitico Y Tuyo (1993).
