Bio

By his given name, Christopher Isaac Stone, an American entrepreneur known as Biz Stone was born on March 10, 1974 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Together with Evan Williams and Jack Dorsey, Stone co-founded Twitter in 2006, which is an online microblogging service. Stone spent one year at each of the universities located in Boston (Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts) before beginning his career in the design department of the publishing company Little, Brown and Company.

Between the years 1999 and 2001, he served in the role of creative director at Xanga, a community of bloggers that he had helped establish. Following that, Williams extended an invitation to Stone to take a position at Blogger, a company that develops software for blogging. In 2003, when Stone was hired, Google had only recently completed its acquisition of the company. Stone was an employee there until 2005, when he decided to leave in order to join Williams in forming Odeo, a company that specialises in podcasting.

Dorsey then approached Stone and Williams with the idea of text messaging, which ultimately led the three men to develop and found Twitter based on Dorsey’s concepts. The service enabled users to communicate with one another by sending “tweets,” which are messages consisting of exactly 140 characters. Stone took on the role of creative director for Twitter shortly after the website went live in 2006.

It rose to prominence very rapidly as both a central location for social networking and a prevalent mode of communication. By 2011, Twitter had more than 100 million monthly active users, and one billion tweets were sent out each week. This success was due in large part to the support of corporations, celebrities, and news outlets. In that same year, Stone resigned from his position as creative director.

In 2012, Stone and Ben Finkel started working on a new business venture called Jelly. Jelly is a search application in which users post questions, and other users in their social network answer those questions. It didn’t launch until two years later, and two years after that, Pinterest bought it. Stone signed back on to his Twitter account not long after that. In addition to this, Stone was a consultant for a number of different web companies.

His published works include the books Blogging: Genius Strategies for Instant Web Content (2002), Who Let the Blogs Out? : A Hyperconnected Peek at the World of Weblogs (2004), and Things a Little Bird Told Me: Confessions of the Creative Mind (2006). In the past, Stone was instrumental in the development of several other well-known social media services, including Xanga, Blogger, and Odeo.

After introducing the online journaling service Xanga in the year 2000, Biz went on to write and publish two books concerning the history of blogging and its influence on society. In 2003, Google extended an invitation to Stone to take on a full-time senior role at its Silicon Valley headquarters with a team that had recently been acquired from Blogger.com. Biz was instrumental in the relaunch of the service and the significant expansion of Blogger across the globe.

In 2005, he decided to return to the world of startup companies. Biz Stone was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and currently conducts an annual master class at the Sad Business School in Oxford, United Kingdom. In the fall of 2008, Stone participated in a debate at Oxford Union against the proposition, “The Problems of Tomorrow Are Bigger Than The Entrepreneurs of Today,” and won the debate. Among Stone’s esteemed teammates was Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn.

Stone is able to teach others a significant amount of what he has learned over the past ten years by acting in the capacity of an advisor to start-up companies. Some of these companies include the answer community Fluther.com, the travel service Trazzler.com, which he co-founded, the content encouragement service Plinky.com, and the non-profit organisation Justgive.org.

Blogging: Genius Strategies for Instant Web Content (2002) and Who Let The Blogs Out? (2005) are two of the books that Biz Stone has written and published on the topic of blogging (2004). In addition to maintaining his personal blog for a significant amount of time, Stone recently had an opinion piece published in The Atlantic. As part of Project Imaginat10n, Biz Stone will make his debut as a director, and he will do so while collaborating with Ron Howard and Canon USA on the direction of a short film.

Stone characterised the opportunity as a chance to satisfy a long-standing need for creative expression on his part.
Since August 2015, Mr. Stone has been a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University. Since August 2018, he has served as an advisor to The Global AI Council. Additionally, Mr. Stone is an active angel investor in businesses such as Slack, Square, and Intercom. His previous experience includes serving as Special Advisor to the founders of Pinterest from March 2017 to March 2018.

In addition to Twitter, Inc., Mr. Stone is the co-founder of A Medium Corporation, which is a company that offers a platform for online publishing. Since the company’s founding in January 2012, Mr. Stone has been a member of its board of directors, and from February 2012 until April 2013, he served in the role of Creative Director for the company. Mr. Stone served as Chairman of the Board of Polaroid Swing, Inc. from July 2016 until November 2017, and he served as an independent director of Workpop, Inc. from September 2014 until May 2017.

Both of these positions were held by Mr. Stone. His accomplishments have earned him accolades such as “Entrepreneur of the Decade” from Inc. magazine, “100 Most Influential People in the World” from TIME magazine, “Nerd of the Year” from GQ magazine, and “Innovation Award” from The Economist. Due to Mr. Stone’s extensive experience working with entrepreneurial companies, we believe that he is qualified to serve on our board of directors and are looking forward to having him join us.
