Oklahoma State University’s intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Cowboys and Cowgirls. Oklahoma State University was known as Oklahoma State College prior to 1957. Oklahoma State first played basketball in 1908. The team won the NCAA championships in 1945 and 1946 under head coach Henry Iba. During A&M’s two championship seasons, center Bob Kurland was named the NCAA Tournament MVP. Kurland was the first player to receive the award twice.

Oklahoma State has appeared in six Final Fours. The team made two Final Four appearances under Eddie Sutton, in 1995 and 2004. Sean Sutton, Sutton’s son, took over as coach of the team in 2006 but resigned on March 31, 2008.  Mike Boynton Jr. has taken over as head coach after Brad Underwood left to become the head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini.

The Cowboys won their only national championship in 1959, but they also finished the second five times. Under head coach Gary Ward, Oklahoma State won 16 consecutive Big 8 Conference championships. During that time, Pete Incaviglia was named Baseball America’s Player of the Century, and Robin Ventura was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in its inaugural class. Oklahoma State has appeared in 19 College World Series, including seven straight from 1981 to 1987.

Josh Holliday is the Cowboys’ current head baseball coach. The Cowboys have won 11 conference championships, one Heisman Trophy, two members of the National Football League Hall of Fame, and 53 All-Americans. Oklahoma State plays football at Boone Pickens Stadium on Lewis Field. The Cowboys’ overall record is 566-539-47. Mike Gundy is the current head coach (94-46 overall and 6–3 in bowl games).

During Gundy’s playing career, the Cowboys have had six seasons with nine or more wins in the last eight. Gundy led the team to a school-record 12 victories in 2011, culminating in a Fiesta Bowl victory over Stanford. His honors include 2010 Big as Oklahoma A&M. For many years, its teams were known as the Aggies, as was customary for most land-grant institutions, though they were also known as the Tigers at times.

A&M, on the other hand, was looking for a new mascot to replace its pet tiger in 1923. (the inspiration behind the school colors of orange and black). A group of students witnessed legendary cowboy Frank Eaton leading the Armistice Day parade. He agreed after being approached and asked if he would be interested in modeling for the new mascot. The caricature earned the moniker “Pistol Pete.”

Only a few decades after the cattle drives ended, the cowboy remained an important figure in the Southwest. The new mascot was so popular that by 1924, Charles Saulsberry, sports editor of The Oklahoma Times, began referring to A&M’s teams as “Cowboys.” Until A&M was elevated to university status in 1957, the terms “Aggies” and “Cowboys” were used interchangeably.

The “Pistol Pete” caricature was formally adopted as Oklahoma State’s mascot in 1958, though it had been used unofficially for more than three decades prior. The Song of the Waves The “Waving Song” is one of Oklahoma State’s fight songs. The song is played at Oklahoma State football games by the Cowboy Marching Band during pregame traditions, after touchdowns, and after victories over the Cowboys’ opponents. While the song is playing, fans wave their right arms in the air, creating the effect of wheat waving in the wind.

The melody of the song is based on “The Streets of New York,” a song from Victor Herbert’s operetta The Red Mill. H.G. Seldomridge, a professor at what was then Oklahoma A&M who heard the tune on a trip to New York City, wrote the lyrics used by Oklahoma State. It was first performed at a follies show at Stillwater’s Grand Opera House in 1908. Since then, it has become a tradition to play the song at Oklahoma State sporting events. , which is located in Stillwater. Pistol Pete, the program’s mascot, is a cowboy.
