Nicky Romero was born on 6 January 1989. During the EDM boom of the 2010s, Dutch DJ Nicky Romero rose to prominence because of his ambitious but approachable tracks that blended progressive house with pop. Early in his career, he gained attention with remixes of songs by David Guetta and Hardwell; his video for the single “Toulouse” went viral in early 2012; and his breakthrough came with “I Could Be the One,” a collaboration with Avicii that topped the charts in the United Kingdom. Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Music Festival have all featured him prominently since then.
He has worked with Nile Rodgers of Chic on their 2015 single “Future Funk,” and he has co-produced tracks for famous pop performers like Rihanna and Britney Spears. Romero is in charge of the thriving Protocol Recordings label and its associated Protocol Radio podcast. In addition to solo albums like the 2022 EP Perception, he has also published collaborative efforts with Nervo, Deniz Koyu, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and others through his label. Under the alias Monocule, he also creates progressive house music.
In 1989, Nick Rotteveel entered this world in the Dutch province of Utrecht. By the time he was a teenager, he was playing a variety of R&B and house records to adoring Dutch audiences, thanks in large part to his early training as a drummer in a marching band. From 2008 on, he released club-focused instrumentals on independent labels like Once Records, eventually signing with majors like Toolroom and Spinnin’. Soon after, Romero caught David Guetta’s attention, and Guetta contacted him out of the blue via e-mail to ask if he would be interested in remixing one of his tracks.
After years of trying to connect, Guetta and Romero ultimately crossed paths during one of his DJ sets in Ibiza, where they quickly became fast friends. In 2009, Romero’s remix of Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over” gained a lot of press attention because of its catchy chorus and infectious beat. Much more remix work was done in 2010 thanks to the encouragement of fellow Dutch DJs like Hardwell and Fedde Le Grand, and it included a Romero remix of Kylie Minogue’s “All the Lovers.”In 2011, he began performing at festivals across Europe, and at the beginning of 2012, he received another high-profile remix assignment, this time for Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’.”
A headlining set at Belgium’s Tomorrowland festival that summer contributed significantly to his growing fame. In May 2012, Romero launched Protocol Recordings as a label specifically for the work of emerging dance music producers. about this time, he posted the music video for his tune “Toulouse,” which features several people wandering about Hamburg while wearing Guy Fawkes masks, to YouTube. The video has since garnered hundreds of millions of views. He was invited to produce an album track for Rihanna’s Unapologetic release later that year. His next big break came when he teamed up with Swedish DJ Avicii on Noonie Bao’s “I Could Be the One.” The record sold hundreds of millions of copies around the world and topped the U.K. singles chart in February 2013.
In 2019, Romero collaborated with Olivia Holt on the dance-pop single “Distance,” with DallasK on “Sometimes” featuring XYL, with DJ Florian Picasso on “Midnight Sun,” and with Stadiumx on “Love You Forever” starring Sam Martin. In addition, he released a new version of the hit song “Carry On” by Kygo and Rita Ora. In 2020, Romero released their debut EP under the Monocule moniker. The following year, he released Volume 2. He has put out music as Romero with a number of other artists, including Deniz Koyu, Timmy Trumpet, Armin van Buuren, and Teamworx. Along with the tracks “Techtronic” and “Stay a Little Longer”, he released an extended play (EP) titled “Perception” in 2022.
Some of the more well-known record labels, such as Spinnin’, Fly Eye, Toolroom, and Flamingo Recordings, took notice of the early releases picked up by the boutique firm Once Records.
As he developed his style, which is a sensual mix of progressive house with electro and acid, he released a cover of David Guetta’s massive hit, When Love Takes Over. When Guetta heard how popular the song was online, he became an advocate and mentor for Romero. After working together on films like Metropolis and Wild One Two, Nicky Romero joined David Guetta for his legendary FMIF dance night at Pacha/Ushuaia Ibiza in the summer of 2012.
Protocol Radio, which debuted during ADE 2012, has over 20 million listeners across the world and is rapidly expanding, and three of Protocol’s four record releases have debuted at the top of the Beatport charts.
The who’s who of the dance music elite have shown their support for his solo albums, including the songs Toulouse, Se7en, and Generation 303. He also has considerable power as a performer. His hard work and talent as a DJ paid off when he was invited to play the main stages at Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas and Tomorrowland, capping off an aggressive international tour schedule.
