Neil Sedaka Bio

Neil Sedaka is a well-known American singer, songwriter, and pianist. He was born on March 13, 1939, in the United States. Since he began his career in music in 1957, he has sold millions of recordings all over the world. In addition, he has written or co-authored over 500 songs for himself and other singers, the majority of the time working with lyricists Howard “Howie” Greenfield and Phil Cody. Sedaka achieved a succession of successful singles throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “Oh! Carol” (1959), “Calendar Girl” (1960), “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” (1961), and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” (1962).

After a brief stint as a founding member of the doo-wop group the Tokens, Sedaka went on to gain success with a string of hit singles. His fame began to diminish by the middle of the 1960s, but it began to rise again in the middle of the 1970s, and it was confirmed by the number one song on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1975, “Laughter in the Rain” and “Bad Blood.” His songs “Stupid Cupid” (performed by Connie Francis), “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo” (performed by Tony Christie), and “Love Will Keep Us Together” (performed by Captain & Tennille) were all top hits for other singers during the course of Sedaka’s long and fruitful career as a songwriter.

In 1983, he was admitted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and he has continued to perform ever since, even mounting mini-concerts on social media when the COVID-19 pandemic has been going on. Brooklyn, New York is where Sedaka began his life. Mordechai “Mac” Sedaka, his father, was of Sephardi Jewish heritage from Turkey and worked as a taxi driver there. In 1910, Sedaka’s maternal grandparents left Istanbul in order to start a new life in the United States. Neil Sedaka’s mother, Eleanor (née Appel), was a Jewish woman who belonged to the Ashkenazi sect and was of Polish and Russian ancestry. He spent his childhood in Brighton Beach.

His paternal grandmother, Rachel Gorman (née Cohen), was married to Morris Gorman (née Garmezano), who was the paternal uncle of the singer Eydie Gormé. Rachel’s parents, Isaac Cohen and Calo Cohen (née Sedaca or Sedaka) were both born in Russia. The mother of Gormé was of Jewish origin and of Lebanese descent. Sedaka showed musical ability in his second-grade choir class, and when his teacher sent a note home proposing that he take piano lessons, his mother got a part-time job in an Abraham & Straus department shop for six months to pay for a second-hand upright piano so that her son could begin taking lessons.

Sedaka went on to become one of the most famous pianists of all time. In 1947, he was awarded a piano scholarship to the Preparatory Division for Children of the Juilliard School of Music, which he attended on Saturdays. This scholarship was awarded to him after he successfully competed in an audition. His mother’s dream for him was for him to become a classical pianist like his contemporary Van Cliburn, and throughout his life, not only did he continue to demonstrate a passion for, but also the ability to play, classical music, he also continued to do so.

At the same time, much to his mother’s chagrin, Neil Sedaka was becoming interested in popular music. However, his mother eventually came around to the idea when Sedaka brought home a royalty check for a five-figure sum for his song “Calendar Girl” in 1961. When Neil Sedaka was 13 years old, a neighbor overheard him playing the piano and invited him to meet her son, Howard Greenfield, who was an aspiring poet and songwriter and was 16 at the time. They went on to become two of the composers of the Brill Building.

Both Neil Sedaka and Mike Greenfield spent a significant portion of their formative years collaborating with each other on songwriting. Show tunes were a source of inspiration for both Sedaka and Greenfield in the years before rock and roll became popular. After Neil Sedaka became a prominent figure in the world of adolescent pop, the duo continued to pen-hit songs for Sedaka and a variety of other performers. Sedaka’s recording career came to an end as a result of the shift that was brought about in American music as a direct result of the British Invasion and the Beatles.

At the beginning of the 1970s, he came to the conclusion that his life required a significant shift, and he moved his family to the United Kingdom as a result. Sedaka and Greenfield mutually opted to discontinue their association with “Our Last Song Together”. Phil Cody, a lyricist originally from Pleasantville, New York, and Neil Sedaka got together to form a new composing team. Following his graduation from Abraham Lincoln High School, Neil Sedaka and a few of his fellow students established a band that eventually became known as the Linc-Tones.

Before Neil Sedaka began his solo career in 1957, the band achieved some regional success with songs including “While I Dream,” “I Love My Baby,” “Come Back, Joe,” and “Don’t Go.” In 1957, however, Sedaka departed the group to pursue his solo career. The Linc-Tones, who would later become known as the Tokens and whose employment with Neil Sedaka would eventually come to an end, would go on to record four top-40 successes of their own despite the absence of Sedaka. Sedaka’s first three solo singles, “Laura Lee,” “Ring-a-Rockin’,” and “Oh, Delilah!” were not successful in becoming hits (although “Ring-a-Rockin'” earned him the first of many appearances on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand), but they demonstrated his ability to perform as a solo singer, which is why RCA Victor signed him to a recording contract.

His first record for RCA Victor, “The Diary,” was inspired by Connie Francis, one of Sedaka and Greenfield’s most important clients, while the three of them were temporarily taking a break while they were idea-making for a new song. “The Diary” was Sedaka’s debut single for RCA Victor. While Francis was writing in her diary, Sedaka approached Connie and requested if he might see it. Connie declined his request. After Little Anthony and the Imperials declined to record the song, Neil Sedaka ended up recording it himself and releasing it as his debut single in 1958. The single reached a high position of No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

His second single, a novelty song named “I Go Ape,” narrowly missed making it into the Top 40, as it peaked at No. 42. However, it became a more popular record in the United Kingdom, ranking at No. 9 there. The third song, titled “Crying My Heart Out for You,” was not successful commercially. It peaked at position 111 on the Hot 100 chart, however, it was able to climb all the way to position 6 on the pop charts in Italy. RCA Because of the financial losses incurred by “I Go Ape” and “Crying My Heart Out For You,” Victor was prepared to dismiss Neil Sedaka from their label. Sedaka was concerned that he would become known as a “one-hit wonder.” Together with his manager, Al Nevins, Sedaka was able to convince the management of RCA to give him one more opportunity.
