Natalie Chioma Achonwa is a Canadian professional basketball player who currently competes for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born on November 22, 1992, in Ontario. She was a member of the women’s basketball team for Notre Dame University’s Fighting Irish. Achonwa was born in the city of Toronto in the province of Ontario, began playing basketball in the city of Guelph in the province of Ontario, and has a height of 6 feet 3 inches (191 cm).
Before coming to Hamilton, Ontario to participate in Canada Basketball’s NEDA program at St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School, Achonwa completed his ninth-grade education at Centennial Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Guelph, Ontario. Achonwa was a member of the Canadian women’s national basketball team that competed in basketball at the 2015 Pan American Games, which were place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from July 10 to July 26, 2015. These games were hosted in Canada. In their first game of the preliminary stages, Canada defeated Venezuela with relative ease, 101–38. The following day, they were victorious over Argentina with a score of 73–58. The last preliminary match was against Cuba; both teams entered the match with a record of 2-0, meaning that the winner would take first place in the group. The score was a nail-biter, but in the end, Canada emerged victorious with a score of 71–68. In the semifinals, Canada would compete against Brazil.
The final score of Canada’s victory over Brazil was 91–63, which clinched a position for them in the gold-medal game versus the United States of America. In the game for the gold medal, the host nation of Canada faced off against the United States of America in front of a sold-out crowd that was primarily dressed in red and white and waving the Canadian flag. The Canadian squad stood together and sang “Oh Canada” in unison when the other teams’ national anthems were performed. After an even start to the game, the United States began to pull away in the second quarter, eventually gaining a lead of more than ten points.
However, the Canadians came back, and because of the support of their enthusiastic fans at home, they were tied with the Americans at the half. The United States of America mounted a comeback, but it was not enough, and Canada went on to win the game and the gold medal 81–73. It was the first-ever gold medal won by Canada in any sport at the Pan American Games.
Achonwa added 13 points and two rebounds to the team’s total. During the 2014 WNBA draft, the Indiana Fever selected Achonwa ninth overall to add to their roster. Because of an injury to her left knee that she sustained during the NCAA playoffs during her final year at Notre Dame, she was forced to sit out the entirety of the 2014 WNBA season. Achonwa started working as the temporary Director of Operations for the Notre Dame women’s basketball program in the fall of 2014, while she was still in the process of recovering from her injury. She was acting in the role of the incumbent Katie Schwab while she was recovering in the hospital from a condition that threatened her life.
After Achonwa had fully recovered from the injury, the Fever did not allow her to sign her rookie contract until the month of February 2015. It was only in time for the start of the 2015 WNBA season that she made her return to the floor. During her first season with the Fever, she saw action in 28 games, 17 of which were starts at center, averaging eight points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.
With a record of 20–14, the Fever came in third place in the Eastern Conference. Achonwa was honored with a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team by the time the season came to a close. The Fever were able to make it all the way to the finals thanks to the efforts of its two all-stars, Tamika Catchings and Marissa Coleman, but they were ultimately defeated by the Minnesota Lynx in the series, 3–2.
Achonwa was relegated to a supporting role on the roster for the Fever during the 2016 WNBA season. She appeared in 24 games but was only given limited minutes off the bench. Once again, the Fever qualified for the playoffs, but this time they were eliminated by the Phoenix Mercury in the first game of the elimination round. For the first time in her career, Achonwa participated in all 34 games during the 2017 season. She started 17 of those games and finished with 7.1 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game on average. In spite of this, the Fever finished with a record of 9–25, making them the second-worst club in the league.
Achonwa was given the responsibility of starting all 34 games for the Fever in the 2018 season. Despite setting new career highs in scoring and rebounding with her new role, the Fever were unable to break their streak of futility and finished the season with a record of 6–28, which was the lowest record in the league. Achonwa re-upped her contract with the Fever for the 2019 season as a restricted free agent. During the course of the season, she participated in a total of 30 games and started 18 of those games. The Fever enjoyed a much better season, but their record of 13–21 was not good enough to get them into the postseason.
As a result of the widespread COVID-19 outbreak in the year 2020, the season was postponed at IMG Academy and reduced in length to just 22 games. Achonwa participated in 18 games and started in 11, but the Fever finished with a record of 6–16 and was ranked as the second-worst club in the league. Despite Achonwa’s efforts, the Fever did not make the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
