Kia Nurse Bio

Kia Nurse is a Canadian professional basketball player who currently competes for the Seattle Storm of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born on February 22, 1996. In addition to that, she works for TSN as a basketball analyst. During her time in Canada, Nurse was a member of the Women’s National Basketball team. She earned a spot on the Olympic team for the Summer Games in 2020. Kia Nurse picked up the game of basketball when she was just four years old, and by the time she was seven, she was already participating in leagues with other skilled players. The nurse received her elementary education at St. Vincent de Paul.

While attending St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Nurse was active in the school’s basketball program. During the course of her playing career, she was an instrumental part of the team’s run of success that saw them win three straight OFSAA high school championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Her squad at the Hamilton Transway Club won seven straight provincial championships while she was a member of the team. The nurse participated in collegiate basketball for the Huskies of the University of Connecticut, which was located in Storrs, Connecticut. During her tenure at the University of Connecticut, Nurse was a member of the team that competed under head coach Geno Auriemma. Her teammates included Breanna Stewart, Gabby Williams, and Napheesa Collier.

Approximately fifty different colleges and universities reached out to Nurse to inquire about the possibility of her playing for their respective teams.[source: missing citation] She began by narrowing the choice down to four teams, which included Connecticut, Penn State, Indiana, and Kentucky, but in the end, she decided on Connecticut. After she had signed her letter of intent, she disclosed that when she was in seventh grade, she had set a goal for herself to one day play for the Connecticut Huskies

The New York Liberty selected Nurse as the tenth overall choice in the first round of the 2018 WNBA draft. The nurse was selected by Liberty. The Liberty would gain Nurse, who would play alongside players like Tina Charles and Epiphanny Prince, among others. On May 20, 2018, Nurse made her debut in the WNBA against the Chicago Sky, scoring 17 points in a game that her team ultimately lost 80–76. In the month of June 2018, Nurse led all WNBA rookies with 34 points scored in the Liberty’s 87–81 overtime victory over the Indiana Fever. This marked the rookie season best for scoring in the WNBA.

For the first time in her career, Nurse was selected to start for her team in the WNBA All-Star Game, which took place in July 2019. As a result of her selection, she became only the third Canadian player to ever participate in the All-Star Game. After being chosen, Nurse became a member of Team Delle Donne for the competition. Additionally, Nurse competed in the Three-Point Contest but was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2015 and 2016, Nurse led the University of Connecticut Huskies to their respective NCAA championships, both of which they won.

She also led Team Canada to victory at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championships, both of which resulted in gold medals for the team and earned Canada a spot in the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In 2019, while playing for the New York Liberty, Nurse scored 465 points, which was enough to set a new record in the WNBA for the most points scored in a single season by a Canadian player. Kia Nurse comes from a distinguished athletic lineage that has achieved a lot in the sporting world. Her father, Richard, is a former wide receiver and slotback for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Richard was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and he played for the Tiger-Cats from 1990 to 1995. Cathy, Nurse’s mother, was a varsity basketball player at McMaster University, where she attended. Darnell Nurse, who is one of Nurse’s older brothers, was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the draft in 2013 and was a key contributor to Team Canada’s success at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Since 2015, he has been a full-time member of the Oilers, and in 2021, he was selected to play on the All-Star team in the NHL. Tamika, Kia’s older sister, participated in a collegiate basketball competition while attending the University of Oregon and Bowling Green State University. At the Olympic Winter Games held in Beijing in 2022, Kia’s cousin Sarah Nurse brought home the gold for Canada in the women’s hockey competition. Donovan McNabb, Nurse’s uncle, was a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and was selected to the Pro Bowl six times throughout his career.

When Nurse was 14 years old, she was a member of the Team Ontario squad that won the Girls’ Under-15 Canada Basketball National Championship in 2010. In the game for the gold medal, Team Ontario defeated Team Quebec by a score of 72–50. The judges deemed Nurse to be the most valuable player in the competition. A year later, she was a key contributor to Team Ontario’s successful championship defense in Winnipeg, where they defeated Quebec in the gold medal game by a score of 76–59. Once more, Nurse was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She was awarded the Hazel Miner Award in both 2010 and 2011, which is given out by the Under-15 Team Ontario women’s basketball program to a player who exemplifies the highest standards of sportsmanship while striving for athletic achievement.

The club teams that Nurse coached regularly won their games thanks to Nurse’s leadership. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School team that won three consecutive women’s high school basketball championships in Hamilton from 2011 to 2013, and she was a member of the Hamilton Transway team that won seven consecutive Ontario Basketball Association championships. During her senior year of high school, Nurse had a point-scoring average of 25.9, a rebounding average of 8.8 per game, and an assist average of 4.9 each contest. After that, Nurse made a decision to accept a scholarship offer from the University of Connecticut.
