Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. His sibling Jabari Fret is a rapper with the band Bravehearts. Nas’s family moved to the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City when he was a little boy. His neighbor, Willie “Ill Will” Graham, was instrumental in introducing him to hip-hop through his record collection. He stopped going to school in 1985 after his parents split up.
Nas, who was born in the Caribbean but has African ancestry, studied African traditions through the shows Five Percent Nation and Nuwaubian Nation. He took up trumpet at a young age and has been playing ever since. He also dabbled in penning rhyming couplets. Rapper and businessman Nas is a household name in the United States. He has sold over 25 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. His last eight albums have all achieved platinum or multi-platinum certification.
Almost all of his albums, including his debut, ‘Illmatic,’ have been heralded as “pieces of perfection” and hailed as “classic works.” Although ‘Billboard’ has included him in its list of the ’10 Best Rappers,’ ‘About.com’ has placed him at the top of its annual list of the ’50 Greatest MCs’ for two years running. His skill in weaving musical and lyrical enchantment has been widely praised. ‘The Source magazine placed him at number two on its list of the ‘Top 50 Lyricists,’ while MTV placed him at number four on its ‘Hottest MCs’ list. ‘Book of Rhymes: The Poetics of Hip Hop’ author Adam Bradley calls Nas the most groundbreaking artist in modern rap. Nas is also a successful businessman, having backed ventures in the fields of online retail, technology, recruitment, and dining. He is also an investor and associate publisher at “Mass Appeal” magazine. In addition to his sneaker shop, he also owns a clothesline.
Nas’s career kicked off in 1991 when he performed at Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque.” In 1994, he released his debut album, titled “Illmatic,” to widespread critical and commercial success in the hip-hop community. It’s considered to be a top 10 hip-hop album.
The release of Nas’s second album, ‘It Was Written,’ in 1996 catapulted him to superstardom. It spent two months at the top of the ‘Billboard 200,’ and was certified double platinum after that.
Hip-hop supergroup ‘The Firm’ was created in 1996 by Nas, his manager Steve Stoute, producer Dr. Dre, and the production company ‘Trackmasters. In 1997, the band put out their first album simply titled “The Album.” The album underperformed expectations and received harsh reviews. By 1998, the band’s members had decided to call it quits.
His album ‘Stillmatic,’ published on December 18, 2001, featured political and social commentary. His rhymes dealt with a wide range of issues, from ghetto life and US policy to his battle with fellow rapper Jay-Z. A lot of people liked the album. On September 23, 2002, a collection of demos and unreleased tracks titled “The Lost Tapes” was made available to the public. ‘I Am…’ and ‘Stillmatic’ were among the album’s many highlights. Even though it was released with less fanfare than most new entries on the ‘Billboard 200,’ it nonetheless managed to sell 70,000 copies in its first week. Critics were largely positive as well.
‘God’s Son,’ Nas’ sixth studio album, came out on December 13, 2002. His mother’s death in 2002 and his dispute with Jay-Z served as major creative influences on these songs. As a result, issues of violence, passion, and faith became central. The album sold 156,000 copies in its first week, putting it at No.12 on the ‘US Billboard 200’ list. The RIAA has awarded platinum status to the album.
Released on November 30, 2004, ‘Street’s Disciple’ was his seventh studio album. Critics loved it, and it debuted at number five on the ‘Billboard 200.’ In the first week, it sold 232,000 copies. On December 19, 2006, he released his eighth studio album, titled Hip Hop Is Dead. He chose the title of the album to reflect his feelings about hip-hop today and his observations about the music business.
On July 15, 2008, he released his eighth studio album. The album was well-received despite its reputation for tackling controversial social and political topics.
His eleventh studio album, titled “Life Is Good,” was released on July 13, 2012. Nas’s life and coming of age are major elements. It debuted at No. 1 on the ‘Billboard 200’ list and was well-received by critics. Together with Aloe Blacc, Dave East, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, he released the single “Wrote My Way Out” in November 2016. Released on the 12th of April 2017, ‘Angel Dust’ is featured on the soundtrack of the TV show ‘The Getdown.’
‘The American Epic Sessions,’ directed by Bernard MacMahon and starring Nas, won multiple awards in 2017. On June 15, 2018, Nas’s 12th studio album, Nasir, was released via Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam Recordings. In 2008, Nas became one of the spokespeople for the sportswear brand “Fila” after signing a contract with the company. He became an investor in ‘Mass Appeal magazine and its partner publisher in April 2013. He declared his intention to launch his own sneaker shop in June.
The music festival ‘Rock The Bells and the online retailer ’12Society.com’ are both partners in his commercial ventures. He made a financial commitment to a fledgling Internet company in September of 2013. The following year he put money into the video startup ‘ViralGains.’ Nas collaborates with the ‘Hennessy’ brand on the ad campaign for their ‘Wild Rabbit’ product. A scholarship for Koru’s training program was provided when he signed a collaboration agreement with the job placement firm in May of 2014. In addition, he shares ownership of the Cloud-based company LANDR. He decided to endorse the Sweet Chick restaurant chain on a nationwide scale after becoming a partner in the business in June 2015. He is also the proprietor of the fashion label HSTRY.
