Nanfu Wang is a Chinese-born American filmmaker who was born for the first time in 1985. The premiere of her first film, Hooligan Sparrow, took place at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016, and it was on the shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2017. I Am Another You, her second film, had its world debut at the SXSW Film Festival in 2017, where it also earned two special jury honors. Meanwhile, her third film was also a success.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature to the film One Child Nation. The Vilcek Foundation has bestowed upon Wang the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Filmmaking for the next year, 2021. China’s Jiangxi Province is the location where Wang was born in 1985. He was born in a tiny rural agricultural community. In the hope that their daughter would grow into a strong person, her parents chose the name “Wang Nanfu” for her. In Mandarin, “Nan” refers to a man, while “Fu” refers to a pillar.
With a younger brother several years younger than her, she had feelings of social exclusion from her classmates while growing up. This was because most of her classmates were only children at the time, which was a consequence of the One Child Policy that was in effect in China at the time. Wang was only 12 years old when her father, who had been 33 years old at the time, passed away from congenital heart disease. Their family was unable to afford medical care for the condition. Therefore, Wang’s father passed away.
She needed to leave school to get employment to provide for her family. Because of financial constraints, Wang’s family was unable to afford to send both her and her brother to secondary school. Instead, she enrolled in a trade school and began working as a teacher for elementary school-age children. The continuing education program at a nearby institution provided Wang with the opportunity to study English literature. Wang had many years of professional experience.
As a result, she was awarded a full scholarship from Shanghai University, where she was enrolled in a graduate program for English language and literature. She eventually became interested in cinema when attending Ohio University and then New York University, where she continued her education. She has Master of Arts degrees in English Literature from Shanghai University, Media Studies from Ohio University’s E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, and Documentary Filmmaking from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
The documentary film Hooligan Sparrow was Wang’s first full-length feature film. It chronicles the narrative of Chinese human rights activists, such as Ye Haiyan (the eponymous “Hooligan Sparrow”), who are seeking to bring justice to government officials who are accused of sexually assaulting multiple young girls from China. While Wang is filming the activists, she becomes the target of harassment from state actors who are reacting to her attempts to capture the work that the activists are doing.
As Wang has noted, “I was interested in many, many topics like the healthcare system and the educational system in China because I didn’t go to high school or college in China.” This is the reason why she decided to produce the film. Consequently, I had the intention of making a movie on the most impoverished sex workers in the country, but I was also aware that it would be difficult to get access to them. Even though I had been familiar with Hooligan Sparrow, whose real name is Ye Haiyan, for a considerable amount of time via social media, I had never really met her in person.
At the time that she was making the video, Wang was unaware that this would make her a target for government monitoring. She said she “knew very little about the activist world.” Wang has said that her relatives and friends were followed and questioned by law enforcement agents. The police inquired whether they knew her, her location, and the acts she was now doing.
Film festivals in over 25 countries, such as Sundance, Hot Docs, Sheffield DocFest, Full Frame, and Human Rights Watch Film Festival, were among the venues where Wang’s film Hooligan Sparrow was on display. Both the LUNA / Chicken & Egg Award for Best Documentary Feature Directed by a Woman and the SXSW Special Jury Award for Excellence in Documentary Storytelling was bestowed to her film I Am Another You, which had its world debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2017.
Wang is a filmmaker who has received sponsorship from both the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund and the Bertha / Britdoc Journalism Fund. In addition, Wang has received assistance from the International Film Institute (IFP). At this year’s Academy Awards, the documentary feature film Hooligan Sparrow was selected for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film shortlist. In 2016, the International Documentary Association presented Wang with the Emerging Filmmaker Award in recognition of his work.
