Emma Pildes Bio

Emma Pildes, a filmmaker nominated for an Emmy, has vast experience in non-fiction storytelling and an irrepressible passion for it. Emma is making her debut as a director with The Janes. As a lead producer at Pentimento Productions, Emma produced several documentaries for HBO, including Spielberg, Jane Fonda in Five Acts, and Very Ralph.

In 2017, Spielberg was shown for the first time anywhere in the world at the New York Film Festival, and it was subsequently nominated for an Emmy. With its global premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018, Jane Fonda in Five Acts debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, which is considered the film’s worldwide premiere. There is a nomination for the film on the 2019 Emmy list.

While working at the Public Broadcasting Service’s American Masters, Emma produced many award-winning programs, including the Emmy and Peabody-winning LennoNYC, the Emmy-winning Inventing David Geffen, and American Masters: Billie Jean King. Emma was born and raised in Chicago and now resides in Brooklyn, New York. She received her degree from Sarah Lawrence College. Directors Guild of America is a member group she belongs to.

Seven individuals who were members of the Jane Collective, a Chicago-based clandestine operation, were taken into custody in the spring of 1972 to help women who needed abortions that were not legal. A buddy who needed surgery was on the verge of committing suicide in 1965, which is when Heather Booth decided to establish the collective—having a baby? Do you not want to be there? Advertising published in the underground press offered a counseling service primarily geared at women of color and women with low incomes. The advertising said, “Call Jane.”

Occasionally, the Janes would execute abortions themselves, but more often than not, they would send women to abortion clinics. The lawyer representing the seven Jane members was successful in delaying the court procedures for the case until the Roe v. Wade decision, which was handed down in January 1973 and overturned abortion laws in the United States on both the federal and state levels. This occurred after the Chicago police found the group.

The Janes, a documentary directed by both Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes and nominated for an Academy Award, was released at the same time as a significant decision about abortion: The Supreme Court released its ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization only a few weeks after the airing of the show on HBO on June 8. The decision placed the authority to prohibit abortion back in the hands of the individual states, even though they were not anticipating this specific decision to come so soon after the release of their picture.

The dread, according to the filmmakers, was constantly there in the background of their thoughts.” Anti-abortion measures in the United States were “falling like dominoes,” according to Pildes, who describes the situation. We needed to rouse the majority, and most people in our nation think that women have the right to make their own decisions. THR talked with the two individuals about the Janes’ enduring legacy and the lessons others might take away from their combined efforts.

Many hadn’t even brought it up in conversation for half a century, and some hadn’t even informed their family members about it. This was a well-guarded secret because it was not only illegal to perform abortions, but it was also illegal to even assist another person in obtaining an abortion. Upon their capture, each of these ladies faced the possibility of serving a sentence of one hundred and ten years in jail. On the other hand, abortion is a highly stigmatized practice.

In the months immediately after he was elected president of the United States in January 2017, Donald Trump started populating the federal courts with judges who held conservative views. After becoming aware of the situation, the team that was responsible for producing the abortion documentary The Janes for HBO Documentary Films started working on a narrative that would remind viewers of the events that occurred fifty years ago when women did not have access to abortions that were both safe and legal.

During a talk at the Contenders Film: Documentary event hosted by Deadline, screenwriter Emma Pildes said, “It felt like the time that we needed to lift this story.” Pildes directed the film in collaboration with Tia Lessin. The Jane Collective, sometimes known simply as Jane, was an underground network established in Chicago during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its primary objective was to assist women in obtaining safe abortions at a time when the practice was illegal.
