Muni Long Bio

Priscilla Renea Hamilton was born on September 14, 1988, and she is an American singer who is commercially known by the stage name Muni Long (pronounced “money long”). Her debut solo studio album, titled Jukebox, was distributed by Capitol Records in 2009 and was issued under her given name. She subsequently spent the next decade co-writing songs for various recording artists, some of which include the singles “California King Bed” by Rihanna, “Worth It” by Fifth Harmony, “Love So Soft” by Kelly Clarkson, “Imagine” by Ariana Grande, and “Timber” by Pitbull starring Kesha, which topped the charts worldwide.

In her second studio album, Coloured (2018), which was released through Thirty Tigers and Sony Music, Hamilton explored the Americana and country soul music genres. Her return to her career as a solo artist coincided with the release of the record. She began performing under the stage name Muni Long, and her single “Hrs and Hrs,” which peaked in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, propelled her to huge commercial success as an independent singer, and ultimately led to her signing a record deal with Def Jam Recordings.

She was awarded the Grammy for “Hrs and Hrs” in 2023, which was given to the performer who gave the best R&B performance. Throughout the course of her career, she has been nominated for three additional Grammy Awards. These nominations include one for Best New Artist, one for Best R&B Song (“Hrs & Hrs”), and one for Album of the Year for her work as a producer on H.E.R.’s Back of My Mind (2021).

Priscilla Renea Hamilton was born in 1988 on the farm that belonged to her grandparents in the Gifford neighborhood of rural Indian River County, which is located west of Vero Beach, Florida. She attended Vero Beach High School and graduated in 2006. Her father served in the Navy, and she did as well. She has mentioned that she started singing when she was two years old, but she did not feel comfortable singing in front of others until she was much older.

She eventually found YouTube and started uploading videos of herself singing in her room when she discovered it. Her debut video was a cover of “Cry Me a River,” which she entered into a competition in which the winner would perform with Justin Timberlake at the Grammy Awards; however, she was not selected as the winner of the competition. She wrote her own songs on her own and shot videos of herself singing in the dictionary. She also did it independently. Eventually, her channel racked up more than 30,000 subscribers, which led to her being invited to take part in MTV’s Say What? Karaoke.

Long secured a recording contract with Capitol Records in 2009, when she was 21 years old, under her birth name. Her popularity had been growing on YouTube. Her debut album was supposed to be released on October 20, 2009, but the release date was pushed back so that she could record more songs. The single “Dollhouse” was initially issued on August 18, 2009, and it was the first taste of what was to come with the album. The single did not make it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but it did get as high as number eleven on the Heatseekers Singles chart, and it was considered a moderate hit on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

The album, Jukebox, was made available for purchase on December 1st, 2009. The album only sold 1,200 copies in its first week of release, which was not enough to place it on the Billboard 200 chart. On the other hand, it did manage to climb all the way up to position number twenty-three on the Billboard Heatseekers album chart, where it remained for a whole week. The album received positive reviews from music critics, despite its lack of success in the commercial market.

Billboard praised her “knack for combining prose and poetry with catchy beats” in an article about her. The second and final single, titled “Lovesick,” was released on March 2, 2010, although it was unsuccessful in reaching the top of the charts. Long began his career in the music industry by penning songs for other recording artists. She also contributed to the writing of “California King Bed,” a song that appeared on Rihanna’s fifth studio album, Loud, which was released in November of the same year.  “Promise This” was the number-one single in the UK in 2010, and  “California King Bed” was a track on the same album.

In the latter half of 2011, she was a participant in the ASCAP retreat, which was a songwriting event held in France and sponsored by the Cain Foundation, Gibson, and Sennheiser. She continued her career as a songwriter, earning credits on albums released in 2011 and 2012 by Rihanna, Demi Lovato, Madonna, Mika, Selena Gomez & The Scene, Chris Brown, and Little Mix, among other artists. Long had an appearance on the song “John Doe” by B.o.B., which was released in 2013 as part of the artist’s album Underground Luxury.

In addition, she made a contribution to Fifth Harmony’s debut album Reflection in 2014 by co-writing the song “Worth It,” which was the third single released from the album. The song ended up reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Long is credited with co-writing the smash hit duet “Somethin’ Bad” which was recorded by Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert in 2014. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and topped the Billboard Country Chart.

After some time, “I Hate Myself for Loving You” by Joan Jett was replaced with this song as the opening theme for NBC Sports’ coverage of the National Football League. The song was picked because of its upbeat and positive message. Carrie Underwood, who originally collaborated with Miranda Lambert to create the song, sang the reimagined version of “Somethin’ Bad” which was renamed “Oh, Sunday Night” for the purpose of the show.

On the tune “Be Right There” that was released in 2015 by Diplo and Sleepy Tom, Long was featured as a vocalist. On the Friday night show that Annie Mac hosts on BBC Radio 1, the single was dubbed “the hottest record in the world.” Lyrics for “Be Right There” were borrowed from the song “Don’t Walk Away” by Jade, which was released as a single in 1992. Long, Pusha T, and Meek Mill worked together on the song “Black Moses” in the year 2016. The song was included on the record that served as the soundtrack for The Birth of a Nation.

Long had a guest appearance on the song “Loverman” by Train in 2017, which was included on the band’s album A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat. Long disseminated “Gentle Hands” and “Heavenly” on April 6, 2018, marking the release of the first two singles from her then-upcoming album, Coloured. Paper Magazine was the venue for the first appearance of the music videos accompanying both singles online. On June 22, 2018, her ninth studio album was finally made available to the public after being delayed for nine years.

According to NPR, the album Coloured is a “consciously confrontational statement” because it was created by African-American country musicians. Rolling Stone highlighted “Family Tree” as an “empowerment” song within the context of the album. According to NPR, the song “Land of the Free” is “an appeal for empathy toward those who live in fear of racial profiling and police brutality.” This sentiment is conveyed in the lyrics of the song. Ashley Gorley contributed to the writing of multiple tunes.
