Mika Emilie Leonia Brzezinski Scarborough is an American talk show host, liberal political analyst, and author. She presently co-hosts the weekday morning broadcast show Morning Joe on MSNBC. Her full name is Mika Emilie Leonia Brzezinski Scarborough and she was born on May 2, 1967, in Poland as Brzeziska. She originally worked as a correspondent for CBS News and was the network’s primary “Ground Zero” reporter on the morning of the September 11 attacks. In 2007, she became a part-time anchor for MSNBC, and two years later, she was offered a position as a co-host for the morning show Morning Joe, with Joe Scarborough.
The Harvard Institute of Politics is pleased to have Mika Brzezinski on staff as a visiting fellow. Her primary focus in politics is on ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work. In addition to that, she has written three novels; two of them are about her work as a journalist, and the other is about her addiction to food. Brzezinski is the daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, a diplomat and political scientist who was a counselor to President Lyndon B. Johnson and served as the National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter.
Brzezinski herself is a political scientist. Brzezinski was born in New York City to her parents, Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was born in Poland and served as a former National Security Advisor, and Emilie Anna Beneová, who was born in Switzerland. Her father was a foreign policy specialist, and her mother was a sculptor. Her mother is of Czech heritage, and she is the grandniece of Edvard Bene, who was the former president of Czechoslovakia.
When she was born, her father was a professor at Columbia University; the family moved to McLean, Virginia, which is located close to Washington, D.C., in late 1976, after Zbigniew was appointed by newly elected President Jimmy Carter to the position of National Security Advisor. Mark Brzezinski, her brother, is a career diplomat for the United States. He served as the United States Ambassador to Sweden from 2011 until 2015, and he has been serving as the United States Ambassador to Poland since 2022. Her second brother, Ian Brzezinski, is a prominent military specialist. Matthew Brzezinski, who is a well-known author, is her first cousin once removed.
She began her education at the Madeira School and continued it at Georgetown University for two years before transferring to Williams College, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1989. Brzezinski graduated from Williams College with this degree. In the year 1990, Brzezinski began her career in journalism by working as an assistant for the ABC program World News This Morning. After a year, she made the switch to the Fox station WTIC-TV/WTIC-DT in Hartford, Connecticut, which is owned by Tribune.
During her time there, she worked her way up from the position of assignment and features editor to that of general assignments reporter. She started working for the CBS affiliate WFSB-TV/WFSB-DT in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1992 and rose through the ranks swiftly, eventually becoming the weekday morning anchor there in 1995. 1997 marked her departure from that position, and the following year she started working for CBS News, where she eventually became a journalist and an anchor for the overnight news show Up to the Minute.
Brzezinski took a brief leave of absence from CBS News in 2001, during which time she worked for CBS News’s rival MSNBC on the weekday afternoon show known as HomePage alongside co-anchors Gina Gaston and Ashleigh Banfield. The three women have been referred to as “the Powerpuff Girls of journalism” by Entertainment Weekly. She went back to work for CBS News in September 2001 as a desk correspondent, a move that catapulted her into the public eye as a primary “Ground Zero” reporter for the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001.
When the South Tower collapsed, Brzezinski was presenting live from the location where it happened. Brzezinski’s most recent role at CBS News was that of a correspondent for the network, as well as a replacement anchor and segment anchor for both breaking news segments and routine update pieces. During this time, she began appearing as a guest correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes from time to time. On January 26, 2007, Brzezinski made his return to MSNBC, where he had previously worked, and began providing the evening “Up to the Minute” news updates.
The rest of the week, she was responsible for covering primetime newsbreaks. In addition to that, she contributed sporadic reporting to NBC Nightly News and made sporadic appearances as an anchor on Weekend Today. When Scarborough selected Brzezinski to co-host Morning Joe, Brzezinski resigned from both shows on the eve of a renewal option, according to Brzezinski. Brzezinski stated she made the decision. “I struggled to keep up with the live interaction broadcasting format at 6-9 in the morning,” stated Brzezinski.
As soon as I realized that one of my key functions was reading the prompt for lead-ins and breaks, I experienced an increase in my level of comfort. The birth of Mika, also known as the “hot anchor.” My participation in the news reader portions, which were ones in which I felt more at ease, was gradually encouraged by the producers. It took Geist and Joe some time to realize that I was capable of reading the news, and the increase of my function was a gradual process. The fact that I was made to sound like a “hot anchor” made me very uncomfortable.
Alongside Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist, Brzezinski has served as a co-host and news reader on MSNBC’s morning program Morning Joe ever since the show’s start. On the morning of June 26, 2007, Brzezinski refused to read a report regarding Paris Hilton’s release from jail near the beginning of the program Morning Joe. After one hour, during a different news break section, her producer Andy Jones once again pushed the item as the lead, ranking it higher than the break that Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana had with President Bush on the Iraq War, which Brzezinski deemed to be more essential.
After making several snarky remarks, the host, Scarborough, attempted to light the story’s script on fire live on air, but her co-host, Geist, physically blocked her from doing so. After that, she tore the script into pieces, and then an hour later, she got up and ran another copy of the script through a paper shredder that she had gotten from Dan Abrams’s office.
In the days that followed, Brzezinski received enormous numbers of fan mail supporting her on-air protest as a statement on the divide between “hard news” and “entertainment news.” The episode gained popularity very rapidly on the Internet. In a similar fashion, she protested live on-air on July 7, 2010, at being pressured to report on Lindsay Lohan and Levi Johnston. After some time, Geist and Pat Buchanan began reporting the tales with the caption “News You Can’t Use,” which they eventually made popular.
