Bio

Michael Dorn, an American actor who was born on December 9, 1952, is best known for playing the Klingon Worf in the Star Trek series. Over the course of five films and 277  television episodes, he has made more regular cast appearances than any other Star Trek actor in the franchise’s history. The son of Allie Lee (née Nauls) and Fentress Dorn Jr., Dorn was born in Luling, Texas. He grew up in Pasadena, California, where he attended Pasadena City College to study radio and television production. He traveled to San Francisco and back to Los Angeles after graduating to pursue a career in music as a performer with numerous different rock bands. Dorn made his on-screen debut in Rocky as Apollo Creed’s bodyguard in an uncredited role.

Two years later, he made a guest appearance on an episode of W.E.B. The show’s producer, who was impressed by his work, introduced Dorn to an agent, who referred him to acting coach Charles E. Conrad. For six months, Dorn worked with Conrad before securing a recurring part in the criminal thriller CHiPs. The Klingon Starfleet officer Lieutenant Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is Dorn’s most notable performance to date. Dorn, the last of the main actors to be cast in The Next Generation, practiced for his audition by avoiding eye contact with the other actors and acting subdued throughout the interview, imitating the personality of the character.  Because his character was so well-liked by viewers, Dorn was added to the cast of the spin-off series Deep Space Nine in an effort to increase viewership.

More than any other actor, he has played the same character in episodes and films of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and other series. He has made a total of 282 appearances as Worf, with the exception of the episodes “Code of Honor,” “Haven,” and “Shades of Gray.” He also made an appearance as Colonel Worf, Worf’s great-grandfather, in the 1991 movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Additionally, he was the director of the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Two Days and Two Nights,” as well as the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes “In the Cards,” “Inquisition,” and “When It Rains…” Dorn has made appearances in a variety of movies, TV episodes, and video games. He has appeared in a Dodge Dart car commercial and served as the spokesperson for Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo.

He portrayed “Future Guy,” a time traveler dispatched from the future to aid in the creation of the 2013 Dodge Dart, in a mocking television commercial for Chrysler in 2012. He also portrays General Thain in the Castlevania: Hymn of Blood web series. Dorn is an expert pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He has flown with both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. He has owned a number of jet aircraft, including a North American F-86 Sabre, a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, and a North American Sabreliner. He humorously refers to the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star as his “starship.” In addition, Dorn holds positions in a number of organizations devoted to aviation, including the Air Force Aviation Heritage Foundation, where he serves on the advisory board. He conducted interviews for The History Channel’s “Private Jets” episode of Modern Marvels.

In a 2010 interview, Dorn said that he had been given the prognosis of “early early” prostate cancer, which prompted him to switch to a vegan diet . He had supporting roles in several independent feature films after his time on Star Trek, such as Shadow Hours, Lessons for an Assassin, and The Santa Clause trilogy, where he played the Sandman in a small role. For cameo appearances on Webster and Family Guy, the latter starring several of his fellow Next Generation cast members, Dorn reprised his role as Worf. He played Kate Beckett, an NYPD police detective, as a recurring character on the television show Castle.

He was one of six actors that returned to perform in the virtual reality game Star Trek: Captain’s Chair. He provided the computer of the Mirror Universe Enterprise with a voice in the 2014 fan-produced Star Trek episode “Fairest of Them All”. In a television series that would be called Star Trek: Captain Worf, Dorn declared in 2012 that he wanted to play his Klingon character once more. He stated:

Worf is one of my favorite characters, and I feel like his potential hasn’t been fully explored and achieved. This is why I had the concept. When I first started considering it, it was clear to me that I wanted to at least share it, so I did, and the response has been fairly remarkable. Different people who I can’t name have contacted us about joining this and wanting to be a part of it.
