Bio

Actor Brent Jay Spiner was born in the United States on February 2, 1949. He is most known for playing the robot Data in four follow-up movies and the television show Star Trek: The Next Generation. He took up the part again for Star Trek: Picard in 2019. He received a nomination in the same category for his depiction of Dr. Brackish Okun in Independence Day, a role he later returned in Independence Day: Resurgence, and he won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1997 for his performance as Data in Star Trek: First Contact. Spiner has also had a successful career as a musician and actor. Jewish parents Sylvia and Jack Spiner, who ran a furniture company, welcomed their son Brent Jay Spiner on February 2, 1949, in Houston, Texas. Jack Spiner passed away from kidney disease at the age of 29 when his son was ten months old.

Spiner was adopted by his mother’s second husband, Sol Mintz, who used that last name from 1955 to 1975 after his father passed away. Early in the 1970s, Spiner relocated to New York City, where he pursued a career as a stage actor. He appeared in a number of Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including The Three Musketeers and Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim. In the movie Stardust Memories, he was credited as “Fan in Lobby,” the one with the Polaroid. In one of the films-within-the-films, he can also be seen as a traveler on the train full of outcasts that the Allen character is stranded on. Spiner began as Lieutenant Commander Data, an android Starfleet officer, in 1987.

The role lasted for seven seasons and four feature films on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was the main character in all but one of the 178 episodes of the show. He played the same character again in the spin-off movies Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis. Despite being billed as the last Trek film starring the TNG cast, Star Trek: Nemesis’ ambiguous ending offered a potential path for Data’s comeback. Data does not age, therefore Spiner felt he was too old to continue playing the role. He portrays B4 in Star Trek: Nemesis and Lore, Data’s android sibling, in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Spiner made a comeback to Star Trek in 2004 when he played Dr. Arik Soong, an ancestor of Dr. Noonien Soong, the man who created Data, in a three-episode Star Trek: Enterprise narrative arc titled “Borderland,” “Cold Station 12,” and “The Augments.” Deadly Games, The Blacklist, Dream On, Gargoyles, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Mad About You, and The Outer Limits are just a few of the TV shows in which Spiner has made an appearance. He played himself in the TV shows Joey and The Big Bang Theory. The Aviator and Dude, Where’s My Car? both include him as an actor. His television-movie roles during this time included the 2000 musical Geppetto and the role of Dorothy Dandridge’s manager and confidant, Earl Mills, in the HBO production Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. His film roles during this time included the roles of I Am Sam, Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Master of Disguise, Out to Sea, Phenomenon, The Ponder Heart, and South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.

Spiner had an appearance in the brief science-fiction TV show Threshold in 2005. The show was terminated in November of that year after 13 episodes. He appears in the comedic flick Material Girls in 2006 alongside Hilary and Haylie Duff . In the episode “Lilith Needs a Favor” from the tenth season of the situation comedy Frasier, Spiner appeared twice as a fellow traveler alongside Lilith Sternin, the ex-wife of Frasier Crane. Spiner collaborated with Maude Maggart in the radio show/musical Dreamland, which was released as a CD record in March 2008.The final episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, “These Are the Voyages,” which aired in 2005, featured a speech that Spiner recorded as Data.

He returned to the character of Data in the 2020 Star Trek series Star Trek: Picard[18] together with Dr. Altan Inigo Soong, the son of Dr. Noonien Soong, who created Data. Although he might be open to portraying Altan Soong, Spiner has said that he does not plan to reprise that role. In Season 2, he plays Dr. Adam Soong, a different ancestor of Dr. Noonien Soong, in the 2024 narrative. He is scheduled to return in Season 3 in an unspecified role.

He provided the voice for his role in a number of Star Trek video games, including Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity, Star Trek: Hidden Evil, and Star Trek: Bridge Commander, in addition to the shows and movies.

In “The Advocates,” a second-season episode of the Showtime cable series The Paper Chase, Spiner made an appearance as a media technician. Spiner relocated to Los Angeles in 1984, where he made appearances in a number of pilots and made-for-TV movies. He portrayed Bob Wheeler, the head of a rural household, in Night Court on a regular basis. He portrayed a damned soul in “Dead Run,” a CBS revival of Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone episode, in 1986. In season three (1986) of the situation comedy Mama’s Family, he had two cameos, each as a different character. Rent Control was Spiner’s first and only leading role (1984). He portrayed the exonerated murder suspect Bill Grand in the Cheers episode “Never Love a Goalie, Part II.” Additionally, Spiner played a preacher in the Tales from the Darkside episode “A Case of the Stubborn.” In the made-for-TV film Manhunt for Claude Dallas, he played Jim Stevens.

James Campbell, a character in Friends who conducts interviews with Rachel for Gucci, was played by Spiner . Spiner attended Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas. He was active on the Bellaire speech team and won the national championship in dramatic interpretation. Spiner attended the University of Houston and participated in local theatre. Spiner began performing at Six Flags Astroworld in 1968, first as a gunfighter and then with his friend Trey Wilson in the Dr. Featherflowers Medicine Show. Dr. Featherflowers was portrayed by both actors alternately. In the 1968 television program The Pied Piper of Astroworld, Spiner also played the part.
