Melissa Ellen Gilbert is a well-known American actress, television director, producer, politician, and former president of the Screen Actors Guild. She was born on May 8, 1964 in the United States. In the late 1960s, Gilbert began her acting career by starring in a number of television advertisements and appearing in parts as a guest star on several television shows. On the NBC series Little House on the Prairie, in which she appeared in from 1974 through 1983, she played the role of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the second eldest daughter of Charles Ingalls, who was portrayed on the show by Michael Landon. After the last episode of Little House aired during the 1983–1984 season, Gilbert had sporadic interactions with Landon. Seven years later, she was called by Landon’s family, and upon learning of his health, she paid him a poignant visit during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on May 9, 1991, during which he disclosed his pancreatic cancer. She paid Landon a visit at his house in Malibu, where he was at that point confined to bed, and the two of them spent the day together. Landon died one week later. On October 6, 1995, Gilbert gave birth to a boy with her second husband, Bruce Boxleitner.
They chose to call him Michael in honor of Landon, who was Gilbert’s first son. Gilbert has maintained a consistent work schedule, mostly in the television industry. In the 1983 biography Choices of the Heart, she played the role of Jean Donovan. In 1996, she appeared in three episodes of Babylon 5 with her then-husband, Bruce Boxleitner, playing the role of Anna Sheridan. She eventually dropped out of school due to ongoing health problems that stemmed from an accident that occurred in 2012.
