In the late 1960s, Gilbert began her acting career by starring in a number of television advertisements and appearing in parts as a guest star on several television shows. On the NBC series Little House on the Prairie, in which she appeared in from 1974 through 1983, she played the role of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the second eldest daughter of Charles Ingalls, who was portrayed on the show by Michael Landon. During the span of the television series Little House, Gilbert starred in a number of television movies, including The Miracle Worker and The Diary of Anne Frank.
She maintained her profession once she became an adult, mostly working in television films. Gilbert has also continued to appear in guest-starring roles on television and has done voice work for animation, including the part of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in Batman: The Animated Series. Gilbert portrayed Caroline “Ma” Ingalls in the touring production of Little House on the Prairie, the Musical from 2009 through 2010. She was in the show both years. She was a competitor on the fourteenth season of the famous reality dance competition program Dancing with the Stars, which was broadcast on ABC in the year 2012. When Gilbert was eight years old, her parents separated and divorced. After that, her mother tied the knot with the attorney Harold Abeles, and the couple went on to have a biological daughter on January 29, 1975, who they named Sara Rebecca Abeles but who is better known by her stage name, Sara Gilbert.
Paul Gilbert passed away on the 13th of February in 1976. Melissa, then 11 years old, was informed that her grandfather had passed away as a result of a stroke. However, she subsequently learned that her grandfather had been a Veteran Affairs patient who suffered from chronic agony and that he had committed himself. After some time, Barbara and Harold Abeles decided to divorce and terminate their marriage. Gilbert was brought up in the faith of her adopted mother, who was Jewish, but she did not receive any kind of official religious instruction or conversion ceremony.
Between the years 2001 and 2005, Gilbert held the position of President of the Screen Actors Guild. Her book, titled Prairie Tale: A Memoir, was published in the year 2009. Additionally, she went to school with Leslie Landon, who was Landon’s daughter.
Leslie was the one who broke the news to her that she had been cast as Laura Ingalls on the hit television show Little House on the Prairie, beating out more than 500 other child actors who had auditioned for the job. The pilot episode was filmed in 1973 and was a ratings winner at the time. A little over a year and a half later, Gilbert started shooting the series. After the passing of her adoptive father, Gilbert developed a very strong relationship with the Landon family. In spite of this, Michael Landon and Gilbert were estranged from one another when it was discovered that Landon had been having an affair with Little House’s young makeup artist, Cindy Clerico.
After the last episode of Little House aired during the 1983–1984 season, Gilbert had sporadic interactions with Landon. Seven years later, she was called by Landon’s family, and upon learning of his health, she paid him a poignant visit during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on May 9, 1991, during which he disclosed his pancreatic cancer. She paid Landon a visit at his house in Malibu, where he was at that point confined to bed, and the two of them spent the day together. Landon died one week later. On October 6, 1995, Gilbert gave birth to a boy with her second husband, Bruce Boxleitner.
They chose to call him Michael in honor of Landon, who was Gilbert’s first son. Gilbert has maintained a consistent work schedule, mostly in the television industry. In 1996, she appeared in three episodes of Babylon 5 with her then-husband, Bruce Boxleitner, playing the role of Anna Sheridan. Gilbert portrayed the role of Caroline “Ma” Ingalls in the musical adaption of Little House on the Prairie beginning in 2008 and continuing through 2009. The play lasted through the 19th of October and was on a national tour of the United States in 2009–10.
The last performance of the tour took place at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, in June of 2010. Gilbert was featured as the lead role in a limited-run Off-Off-Broadway production of the one-woman play My Brilliant Divorce written by Geraldine Aron in 2001 during the months of March and April of 2018.
