Matthew Reilly Bio

Matthew Reilly was born in Sydney in 1974, and he did not always have a strong interest in reading. It wasn’t until he read Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird in the tenth grade that he realized reading might take you to another planet. After hearing this, Matthew didn’t waste much time coming up with his own ideas for stories. At the age of 19, while he was still in college studying law, he began writing his first novel, Contest.

In 1996, after receiving refusals from all of the big publishing houses, Matthew released Contest independently and printed one thousand copies. He wrote a novel that had the appearance of being published by a major publisher, and he sold it to booksellers in Sydney one at a time.

The editor was able to find Matthew by using the contact information that was printed on the front of the book. It’s interesting to note that those first editions of Contest that were produced by the author themselves are now highly sought for by collectors.

His works have been translated into over 20 different languages and have collectively sold over 7 million copies around the world. Since the publication of Seven Ancient Wonders in 2005, Matthew’s novels have consistently topped the list of new fiction titles launched in Australia during that year with the highest number of copies sold.

Additionally, Matthew has authored a number of short stories, one of which is titled Roger Ascham and the King’s Lost Girl and is a unique prelude to The Tournament that can be read for free online. Other short stories include ones called “Time Tours,” “The Mine,” and “Altitude Rush,” which is a high-adrenaline adventure.

He is the proud owner of a Back to the Future–inspired DeLorean DMC-12 and regularly puts it through its paces. In addition to that, he has a life-size carbonite statue of Han Solo hanging on the wall of his office! Matthew can be found on the golf course when he is not working on a screenplay for a movie or creating a novel. The contest, the author’s first book, was turned down for publication by all of Sydney’s major publishing houses.

Because of this, Reilly decided to publish his work independently, and he did so by borrowing $1,000 from his family. Unfortunately, several volumes were taken from the back of his car. Since the original Contest books have become such a rarity, it is possible to sell them on eBay for up to $1200 each. Matthew went to a bookstore in Sydney and inquired with the manager about the possibility of putting the copies on one of the store’s bookshelves.

They decided to take advantage of the opportunity and put them up. Very soon after that, the books were gone, and the proprietor of the bookstore called Reilly to ask him to place an order for additional copies. After reading one of the copies, Cate Paterson, the Commissioning Editor for Pan Macmillan, was so impressed that she immediately hired Matthew to write Ice Station, which went on to become a huge success all over the world.

In 2004, he sold the film rights to Hover Car Racer to Disney under an option agreement. Ice Station was a project for that he had previously sold the film rights to Paramount Pictures, but that option has now expired. Spends a lot of time away from home gathering information for his books throughout his travels. He has traveled to Egypt’s Abu Simbel and the Three Gorges Dam in China, and he has even hiked to the foot of Mount Everest! Reilly’s employment outside of the literary world includes his service on the Public Lending Right and Educational Lending Right Committee of the Australian government from 2007 to 2011. Additionally, he frequently gives talks at libraries all around the world, including in Australia. He makes his home in Los Angeles at the moment.
