Bio

Masta Killa is the stage name of American rapper Jamel Irief, who was born in Elgin Turner on August 18, 1969. He is a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Masta Killa is better known by his stage name.  Even though he is one of the Wu-Tang Clan’s less well-known members he was featured on only one track on the group’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers in 1993, from the middle of the 1990s he has been extremely productive in both the group’s albums and his own solo work. In 2004, he launched his debut album, titled No Said Date, which was met with great acclaim. Since then, he has gone on to record three more albums. Before we started Wu-Tang, I had never been on stage before. That was my very first experience serving as MC.

I have been participating in talent shows ever since I was in elementary school. To the point of breaking, and stuff like that. That kind of guy was I in the past. I used to enjoy popping. That would be me. Always getting into trouble with regard to music. My first experience performing with a microphone in my hands was for the Wu-Tang Clan. There was never a “next level” for someone like me. It was only Wu-Tang, and that settled the matter. I never tried to get on. Never bothered to seek any of this since, in all honesty, none of it had crossed my mind. I’m kind of hanging out with GZA right now, and I just happened to find some shit. “Oh, word?” And at that point, I said to myself, “Maybe I can do this.” When I was younger and frequenting clubs, I was simply passing the time.

I never pretended to be a member of the MC team when I stepped in there. I did not make any attempts to secure a record deal or distribute recordings. Only Wu-Tang and I have been here the whole time. According to what Masta Killa said on the Wu-Tang Corp. website, “I am aware that many of the fans interpret my demeanor as being serious and reserved. This is due to the fact that I take great pride in my job. This is not a game at all. Together with the Clan, I put forth a lot of effort to provide you with the finest.” Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Barry White, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Ohio Players are some of the artists that he enjoys listening to. Masta Killa is a vegetarian, just like GZA and RZA, who are also members of the Wu-Tang Clan.

According to the Wu-Tang clan documentary titled Of Mics and Men, which was released in 2019, Masta Killa has ties to both Marvin Gaye and Nat Turner. Eternal and Jason are Masta Killa’s sons, and they are his children. [source: missing citation]Masta Killa, who was born in Brooklyn, New York City, was the final member to join the Wu-Tang Clan. As a result, he did not make an appearance on the group’s debut record, which was titled “Protect Ya Neck.” Additionally, he was the only member of the group who was not a rapper at the time that the group was being formed. It is clear that he was heavily taught by the GZA in the early days of his involvement with the group due to the comparable flow that both of them adopt. His rap moniker comes from the kung fu movie Shaolin Master Killer, which was released in 1978. .

On the debut Wu-Tang Clan album, Masta participated on only one track, “Da Mystery of Chessboxing,” where he provided the closing verse. Masta just barely made it onto the track, while Killah Priest was very close to being selected instead of him. In point of fact, Killah Priest states on the No Said Date DVD that he and Masta Killa were in competition for the spot on “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’,” and that while Killah Priest fell asleep, Masta Killa stayed up all night writing, and Killah Priest woke up the next morning to Masta Killa’s verse on the track. Masta Killa stayed up all night writing while Killah Priest fell asleep. His verse on “Da Mystery of Chessboxing” was the only one that could compete with the other, more experienced Wu-Tang members because he was still a growing rapper at the time that Enter the Wu-Tang  was being composed.

During the initial run of solo projects, he contributed to multiple songs that are now regarded as classics by the Wu-Tang Clan, including “Winter Warz,” “Duel of the Iron Mic,” and “Glaciers of Ice,” among others. His flow at the time was notably different from the more frantic and forceful techniques of other members, such as Inspectah Deck and Ghostface Killah, so it caught people’s attention since it was very sluggish and laid-back. Masta Killa is also the Clansman who is most fond of imagery relating to Chinese martial arts. Masta became a constant in the Wu-Tang Clan’s line-up with regular appearances throughout the double album Wu-Tang Forever, which was released in 1997. The album was Wu-Tang Clan’s second studio album.

Masta Killa was the last member to release a solo project. It was delayed for several years and finally released in June 2004 under the title No Said Date. It received high praise from critics and became the best-selling album on the independent label Nature Sounds. It is notable for featuring every core member of the Wu-Tang Clan on the album after a period in the group’s history in which the group lacked unity. Made in Brooklyn, his second studio album, was released on August 8, 2006, and features production from Pete Rock and MF Doom, amongst others. In March of 2006, Bronze Nazareth released “Ringing Bells,” the lead single from the album. “Ringing Bells” was created by Bronze Nazareth.

Selling My Soul was the title of his third studio album, which was released by him in December of 2012. The album features deep soul grooves and guests such as Kurupt and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The album was meant to serve as a warm-up for his much-anticipated follow-up, Loyalty is Royalty, which was announced for the first time in 2010 and eventually came out in 2017.
