Mason Tony Mount is an English professional footballer who was born on 10 January 1999. He now plays as an attacking or central midfielder for the club Manchester United, which competes in the Premier League, as well as for the England national team. Mount began his senior club career with Chelsea, and between 2017 and 2019, he was loaned out to both Vitesse and Derby County. Between 2017 and 2019, Mount played for both clubs.
In the years that followed, he solidified his position at Chelsea as an essential member of the team, and in 2021, the club won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Both in the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons, he was Chelsea’s Player of the Year and received the award. In July of 2023, Manchester United paid an initial transfer fee of £55 million to acquire Mount. This transaction took place.
Mount was a part of the England national under-19 team that claimed victory in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2017. At the age of 20, he made his first appearance for England in a senior international match in 2019, and he went on to compete for England at the UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022. His father, Tony, played football at a lower level of competition in the past and went on to coach at several local clubs, notably Havant Town. When Mount was a young boy, he was a member of the local teams Boarhunt Rovers and United Services Portsmouth.
In 2003, while he was only 4 years old, he participated in training at the academies of Portsmouth and Chelsea for one day each week. Mount ultimately decided to sign with Chelsea in 2005, and he named Frank Lampard, Luka Modri, and Andrés Iniesta as among of his all-time favorite players. Mount was promoted to Chelsea’s senior team when he turned 18 years old; he had previously made his debut for the club’s under-18 team in 2014 when he was just 15 years old, and he also appeared routinely for the club’s under-21 team by the year 2016. During the 2016–17 U18 Premier League season, Mount played in all 30 games and scored 10 goals for the team, which ultimately won the championship.
By the time 2017 rolled around, he had also been awarded two FA Youth Cups, the UEFA Youth League, and the title of Chelsea Academy Player of the Year. On July 24, 2017, Mount began his loan stint with the Dutch club Vitesse, who compete in the Eredivisie. On August 26, he made his maiden appearance with the first team when he came on as a substitute in the 77th minute of Vitesse’s home loss to AZ (2–1). The following month, he was given his first start in Vitesse’s KNVB Cup first-round defeat away to fifth-tier team Swift.
He played the full 90 minutes of the 0–0 draw, which Swift won in a penalty shoot-out. The match ended with a score of 0–0 for Vitesse. On October 1st, in the 76th minute of a 1–1 home draw with Utrecht, he scored his first goal for Vitesse. Mount went on to win the Player of the Year award with Vitesse and was later selected for the Eredivisie Team of the Year. On the evening of May 9, 2018, Vitesse played ADO Den Haag in the first leg of the Eredivisie European play-off semi-final. Mount scored his maiden hat-trick, and Vitesse went on to win the match 5–2 on the road.
Mount’s goal helped Vitesse to a 2–1 victory in the second leg, giving them a 7–3 victory overall. Mount opened the score in the first leg of the final against Utrecht; however, he received a booking and was consequently suspended for the second leg of the match. Before coming back to Chelsea, Mount played for Vitesse in a total of 39 games across all competitions. He scored 14 goals during his stint there. On July 17, 2018, Mount began his loan season with Derby County, a team that competes in the Championship.
On his first game for Derby, which took place on August 3, 2018, he scored an equalizer in the sixty-first minute of a road win over Reading by a score of 2–1. After suffering a hamstring injury in a match for the FA Cup against Accrington Stanley, Mount was out of commission for a period of two months. Upon his comeback, he helped his team defeat Rotherham United by a score of 6–1, earning a penalty kick for a colleague named Martyn Waghorn and then scoring himself. Two weeks later, he scored his second senior hat trick in a 4–0 Championship league game against Bolton Wanderers, keeping Derby in contention for the promotion playoff.
This was his second career hat trick. Mount renewed his agreement with Chelsea on July 15, 2019, for another five years, which will keep him playing for the club through the year 2024. On the 11th of August 2019, he participated in his first game for Chelsea, which was a 4–0 loss on the road against Manchester United in the Premier League. A week later, he scored his first goal for Chelsea against Leicester City in Frank Lampard’s home debut as manager at Stamford Bridge, which ended in a 1–1 draw. He added another goal in the following game, which was an away victory against Norwich City by a score of 3–2. In the first game of the Champions League, which took place on September 17, he injured his ankle while playing against Valencia.
In March 2020, Chelsea had a talk with Mount about how he disregarded the rules on self-isolation during the COVID-19 outbreak. Mount had gone to play football with friends, including West Ham’s Declan Rice, during the time that the entire squad was required to remain in self-imposed isolation as a result of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s positive COVID-19 test. Mount scored the game-winning goal for Chelsea in their 3–1 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final match on July 19, 2020. This victory helped Chelsea advance to the FA Cup Final.
On July 22nd, he made his debut with the first team, becoming the first Chelsea Academy graduate to do so. By the end of the season, he had played 50 times for the team. Mount scored the opening goal for Chelsea on the final day of the 2019–20 Premier League season from a free kick, and he assisted Olivier Giroud for the second goal, which helped Chelsea win a spot in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League. The match against Wolves took place on the final day of the Premier League season. Mount was selected to start for Chelsea in the FA Cup final match against Arsenal on August 1; however, the Blues were ultimately defeated by a score of 2-1.
