Born on August 3, 1941, Martha Helen Stewart is an American retail entrepreneur, author, and television personality. She developed Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and became successful in a number of businesses, including publishing, television, retailing, and online shopping. She is the publisher of the Martha Stewart Living magazine, the author of multiple best-selling books, and the presenter of the syndicated television shows Martha and Martha Stewart Living.
On August 3, 1941, Martha Stewart was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was born to Polish parents Edward Kostyra and Martha as the second of their six children. Her father subsequently changed careers to become a drug dealer, although both of her parents were educators. The family relocated to Nutley, New Jersey, when Stewart was three years old. She chose the name “Grace” as her confirmation name in the Catholic faith. As her father-in-occupation, law’s a stockbroker, Martha Stewart started a second job in the field in 1967.
Andrew Stewart created a publishing business and was the CEO of numerous others throughout this time. The 1805 farmhouse on Turkey Hill Road in Westport, Connecticut, which would eventually serve as the inspiration for Martha Stewart Living’s TV studio, was bought and refurbished by Andrew and Martha Stewart when they relocated there. Stewart’s flair for remodelling and decorating became obvious throughout the project. Harry N. Abrams, Inc., a well-known publisher in New York City, had appointed Andrew as its president.
He was in charge of publishing the English-language version of Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet’s Secret Book of Gnomes series in 1977, which became a smash hit and landed on The New York Times Best Seller list. At the book release party, when Stewart met Alan Mirken, CEO of Crown Publishing Group, he hired Stewart’s firm to cater. Stewart agreed to work with Time Publishing Ventures in 1990 to create the new publication Martha Stewart Living, for which she would also serve as the editor-in-chief. With a 250,000 initial rate base, the first issue was published in the latter part of 1990. More than 2 million copies each issue were distributed at its highest point in 2002.
Stewart launched Martha Stewart Living, a weekly half-hour television show based on her magazine, in 1993. In 1997, the programme moved to the weekdays. In 1999, it became a full-hour show with half-hour episodes airing on the weekends. It continued airing until 2004. Stewart also started contributing often to NBC’s Today Show and then to CBS’s The Early Show. He also featured in several CBS network holiday prime time specials. Stewart’s skill as a cook and hostess attracted Mirken, who subsequently got in touch with her to create a cookbook using her recipes and images from her events. Consequently, Elizabeth Hawes ghostwrote her first novel Entertaining, which was released on December 13, 1982.
After Entertaining was a success, Stewart published a number of additional books under the Clarkson Potter imprint, including Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook, Martha Stewart’s Hors d’Oeuvres, Martha Stewart’s Pies & Tarts, Weddings , which was also ghostwritten by Elizabeth Hawes, The Wedding Planner, Martha Stewart’s Secrets for Entertaining, Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus, and Martha Stewart’ She also wrote scores of articles for magazines, newspapers, and other publications on homemaking during this period, in addition to making several television appearances on shows like Larry King Live and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Andrew and Martha Stewart divorced in 1990 after their 1987 separation.
In 1976, Stewart and Norma Collier, a friend from her modelling days, launched a catering company in their basement. When Collier claimed that Stewart was difficult to deal with and was also doing side catering gigs, the company swiftly lost its viability. Stewart quickly acquired Collier’s share of the company. Stewart was also appointed manager of the Market Basket, a specialty food shop, but following a dispute with the mini-owners, mall’s she was ejected and had to create her own shop. When Stewart was ten years old, she sometimes babysat the kids of New York Yankees players Gil McDougald, Yogi Berra, and Mickey Mantle.
Mickey and Merlyn Mantle had four boys, whose Stewart took care of and whose birthday celebrations she planned. She started modelling as well. Stewart appeared in a Unilever television ad when he was 15 years old. She later made appearances in magazine and television ads, including one for Tareyton’s “Smokers would rather fight than switch!” cigarette campaign. She supplemented her scholarship money throughout her undergraduate years by doing “modelling gigs at $50/hour — which was a lot of money at the time.”
Stewart learned how to cook and sew from her mother. Later, when she went to her grandparents’ house in Buffalo, New York, she learnt how to can and preserve food. Her father loved gardening and shared a lot of his wisdom and know-how with his daughter. Stewart participated in a variety of extracurricular activities as well, including the school newspaper and the art club. Stewart obtained a high school diploma from Nutley.
She enrolled at Columbia University’s Barnard College with the intention of majoring in chemistry, but she subsequently changed her mind and chose to study art, history, and architectural history instead. She modelled for Chanel as part of her college tuition assistance programme. She met Andrew Stewart at this time; he had just graduated from Yale Law School. They tied the knot in July 1961. A year after their wedding, she went back to Barnard to complete a double degree in architectural history and history.
Stewart was found guilty of felonies in connection with the ImClone stock trading case in 2004; she spent five months in federal prison before being freed in March 2005. There were rumours that the event would essentially bring her media empire to an end, but Stewart launched a rebound effort in 2005, and her business achieved profitability in 2006. Stewart returned to the board of directors of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in 2011, and in 2012, she again assumed the corporate chair position. Sequential Brands purchased the business in 2015.
